Just learned from visiting my grandma this weekend that my grandpa who served in WWII worked on Bomber planes! Wow!! Quite the coincidence after reacting to this video. Gives me all the emotions all over again!

Being that you like history, I don't know if you have a movie reaction channel, but if not, try watching Band of Brothers. A true story about Easy Company, a WWll 10 episode mini series. A true story. BoB should be required watching for all high schoolers. Ps: produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

Apparently Franz Steglr was taught by his flight instructor that if he ever shot down an enemy pilot parachuting from a destroyed plane, that he had best shoot himself as well because he (the instructor) would do it for him as soon as he landed. It was this notion of honor among warriors that was ingrained in him and made him realize that it would be a dishonor to shoot down a helpless opponent. Also, my memory is a bit spotty these days, but I believe that had he shot down one more enemy aircraft, Steglr would have been an "ace" and been awarded the Flying Cross.

You are correct about the Cross. They had a point system, and a bomber was worth 2 points, the amount Franz needed to earn the medal. Which is what the line about giving up the cross he deserved is referencing in the song.

Franz instructor told all who he taught that if they should ever shoot a pilot who used his parachute he would find them and shoot them himself because those people were defenseless. Franz saw the damage of the bomber and saw that as the same thing. He actually got to meet a lot of the families of the crew when they had a reunion. He was hesitant to come because he was the enemy back then. But he was welcomed as an old friend. They told him that everyone there was alive because he had shown mercy that day

Fun fact: Franz Stigler was invited to a reunion for the Bomber group several times and one of the first times, Stigler was looking out on a crowd of people and Stigler said he felt that he shouldn't be there and Charlie took his arm and told him that the people in the crowd were the children and grandchildren of the men that he saved that day.

It’s an excellent read and adds details shown in the song but are lost without knowing the meaning behind them. Like when he escorted the B17 over the coast to prevent the AA guys from shooting it down. It’s shown in the clip with the German stopping his gun crew from shooting when he saw the 109

Sharing the important tales of history is what Sabaton does extremely well, they do not pick nations over any other, they pick stories that should be heard and never forgotten. The risk the German pilot took cannot be underestimated, not only did he refuse to shoot the plane down, he acted like the wingman instead, protecting the badly damaged bomber from Flak (anti-aircraft shells) and making sure they got safely to the North Sea, where the crossing would be safe for the bomber to get back to base. At any moment he and his plane could've been reported to higher ups in the command chain, and he would've been in court for treason during wartime (that is game over). But he took the risk, for very personal reasons, and he succeeded in his effort to save at least that crew, and the story only gets better when you find out that they found each other after the war and not only became friends, but considered one-another family. To quote a famous game "War never changes" but i like to add to that, "Honor never changes either".

This is a story everyone should learn: Not all German soldiers, pilots, tankers, and sailors were NAZIS. When Franz Stigler went to the American Airborne reunion, the WW2 Allies veterans gave Stigler a hostile welcome and labeling him a Nazi. The reason Charlie Brown kept this incident a secret was because if Charlie Brown spoke about this either during WW2 or the aftermath of WW2, Stigler would have been executed by Nazi Germany or imprisoned in an American prison for eternity.

If you like history, Sabatons Screaming Eagles is my favorite. It's about the 101st Airborne Division Screaming Eagles in WWII. The division is surrounded by three German armies in the town of Bastogne in the middle of a winter storm. They can't get any resupply or support from the air because of the storm. Extremly outnumbered, running out of supplies, and freezing, they refuse to surrender. They continue to hold out until the weather clears and they receive relief. The division received one of two Presidential unit citations they received in WWII for the action. I may be a little biased as I was a Screaming Eagle myself 40 years ago. Give it a watch.

Isn’t it amazing that the evil is more frequently observed in history, but the good, the great, will outlive it. Enemies are people, and they believe in their cause for the most part, but it doesn’t make the person on the other side a monster. Aggressors must make the targets inhuman, capable of monstrous acts to push the agenda. Sometimes humanity wins over greed and aggression. I appreciate your reaction to this beautiful act of one human being to others. Humanity needs to be celebrated over greed and avarice.

Not that I just want to watch your videos because you cry, and I cry right along with you, but you have such a big heart that's so full of humanity and that's what is so endearing about you. Then afterwards your thoughts and insights that you share are always so great to hear. You may be so very much younger than I am but you have an old soul. Speaking of WW2 stories, my mom was a teenager living in Berlin during the war and used to tell me stories about her experiences, and they were not happy ones, except one. After the war when Berlin was being carved up into territories among the Allies including Russia who was trying to starve the city into submission the Berlin airlift took place and the crews would often tie little parachutes to packages of candy and chocolate and drop them to the waiting groups of children as they came in for landings. Well, my mom was one of those kids! She ended up emigrating to the US to live with relatives and ended up marrying my dad.

One of many absolutely incredible stories to come out of WWII. Also, it makes me immensely happy to see someone share such an intense love for history like I have had my entire life. There is a book about Franz and Charlie's story, it's called "A Higher Call", and it's an amazing read. As far as the B17 goes, it was known for being able to take immense amounts of damage and somehow still manage to get it's crew home. There are some unbelievable photos out there of planes that made it home, and there are still B17 "Flying Fortress'" that you can actually go see, touch, even fly in as well as watch them fly at air shows. My personal favorite is one called "Sentimental Journey" that flies around the country visiting airshows, and I have been fortunate enough to see the beautiful old gal many times. Another great one is named "Aluminum Overcast". We have lost a couple recently due to unfortunate circumstances, so go see and support these mechanical veterans while we are still able to. Great reaction, keep up the great work! 😊

One in the army who was a machine gunner on a tank and was sent to the DMZ zone in north Korea during the Korean War . He never was in actual battle but tensions were high. Another brother served in the navy on the USS Los Angeles jn the late 50's. I signed up for the army in the mid 70's during the Vietnam War but because of health issues I was turned down. the Luftwaffe was probably the last airforce in the world who was still using the "kinghts of the sky" motto in 1940 (quickly decline during the war of course), things like honour, gentlemanly warfare, while shooting on a parachuting ennemy was frowned upon if not litteraly formerly forbidden Franz Stiegler was instructed by the flights instructors, and I quote "if I saw any of you shooting on a parachuting ennemy, I will shoot you myself" and for him the plane was so badly damaged that basicaly it was somehow equivalent as seeing these men parachuting

@StacyRPG: Just to give you a little bit of extra info, the reason why Franz Stigler flew ahead and to the left of the Pub -- roughly 11 o'clock, from Charlie's POV -- is that Luftwaffe protocols dictated such a formation indicated a capture, rather than a kill. While not always done, a lot of German pilots in World War II were taught their flight training by pilots who flew in the Great War. During the Great War, it wasn't unusual for an enemy pilot to land, escorted by a German pilot who took the opposing pilot prisoner. While not preferred, it did mean better treatment for downed pilots, as usually, like today, many pilots were officers. The reason for taking an enemy pilot prisoner during the Great War was that the biplanes many pilots flew were cloth and wood -- and if a pilot could land a damaged plane, he had tremendous skill. That said, mid-air captures were not common, but weren't exactly unheard of, either. Because Franz indicated a capture of the Pub, German Flak-88s on the ground were instructed to not fire on planes captured by Luftwaffe pilots. This is how Franz protected the plane not once, but twice, since he saw the damaged plane, and her injured crew, as the same as a pilot who was helpless in a parachute. The Pub, when Franz came upon her, was no threat -- and had his actions came to light during wartime, he could have been court-martialed for treason and executed.

Pre-watching comment: YES! This is a good one! :D Edit: Post-video - Knew you would love this one. Amazing story and wonderfully told by Sabaton. On a more personal note, being a Swede we don't have as many veterans and stories of our grandparents from war-time. Still, my father participated in a UN peacekeeping mission, and his dad was part of the conscripted forces meant to safeguard our borders during our neutrality during WWII so I relate somewhat to stories like this. I'm a big history buff generally, but military history has this unique flair of excitement. You can't forget what it's about - war - and in war people and countries go through horrible horrible things, but nevertheless. Exciting.

The German pilots commanding officer was a WW1 veteran and back then they hade an unwritten rule that u never fired at a pilot who got shot down and survived the crash or jumped out with a parachute. So in WW2 he tried to push for this mentality among hes pilots and the commanding officer got word of this incident and called him into hes office to explain himself why he dident shot the bomber down. The pilot explained that the bomber was so badly damaged that it should not have been able to fly and he saw it like shooting at a parachute. Apparently the commander agreed with him and even said that hade he shoot it down he would have killed him himself. Obviously he couldent make it public or the pilot would very likly have been executed for allowing the plane to get away.

Take a tour of a B-17 if you get the chance. As big as these planes where they where extremely small inside. Unpressurized, not just the enemy was a threat but the airspace in which they fought was a killer. Dammaged oxagen systems, clogged masks and the sub-zero temps. Stigler notice when he was coming up to the bomber from at 6:00 position which would be directly behind the airplane but the tail Gunner was shot and killed and he wasn't firing at them that's the reason why he spared the aircraft hence the reason why he spared the aircraft he was curious as to why they were shooting back at him and don't be surprised if his daughter replies back she's fairly active on these reaction videos

What blows my mind is how incredible the B17 was. The amount of punishment that plane could take and get people home is just beyond comprehension - 3 engines down, no oxygen, holes in the airframe, missing wing sections, holes in the fuel tanks and wings....and it STILL keeps flying.

Jovita will be here soon... I think that next stop should be "Coat of Arms". Although the story is somehow inaccurate at the beginning, it's pretty close and it's about the role that my country played in WWII 🖖

Edit: Yeah, the thing is German anti aircraft couldn't shoot at it because a German plane was right behind it. That's why the actual escort was such a HUGE thing. He just didn't leave it be. "Night witches" next! Wohoo! 😁

I came across your channel watching you react to Queen's Live Aid performance. It was really enjoyable. I love watching people's first time reactions to things I love, it makes me feel as though I'm seeing it again through your eyes. Keep it up!! I noticed you don't have any Foo Fighters song reactions. If you're not familiar with them try Everlong and/or accompany it with Rick Beato breaking the song down in What Makes This Song Great. Thanks

I literally always cry when I listen to this! Definitely recommend selecting the animated story video if there is one when doing a reaction (red baron, night witches, first soldier, lady of the dark etc)

Sabaton is awesome! This song is great, and the true story of Ye Old Pub pilots Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler is incredible. There's also a show on Apple Tv called Masters of the Air that is really worth a watch.

Just thought I’d let you know this is a collaboration with Yarnhub, they did another one for the night, witches video as well. Yarnhub did the background voiceover before and after the song. Yarnhub do animated history videos if you’re so interested The full video doesn’t have the sabaton song in it. It does, however contain a lot more information that the song covered. The video is well, worth a look.

Just a small update. The enemy pilot had been trained by a very honourable instructor, and that instructor had said that if he ever heard of any of them shooting parachutes, he would come find them and kill them himself. When the enemy pilot, Franz saw the grievously batted B-17. He realised that this aircraft was essentially a flying parachute. So first, he tried to get it to the land and take them prisoner that way, at least they will survive. Then, when the plane said, no, he tried to get them to divert to Sweden, who was neutral. But when option a and option B failed, he decided to risk himself and the B-17 by flying next door to them, because he knew that the deadly accurate AA guns would kill them as they crossed the coast. He was risking himself from the aircraft itself, and from observers on the ground. If they had seen him and realised that he was assisting an enemy, he would’ve been executed. Anyway, Franz went on to fly the new jet planes coming out of Germany, ultimately, surviving the war. Sadly ye olde pub didn’t get any medals because they classified that mission due to the fact that there was an honourable German and allied command couldn’t have that get out. Years later, Charlie decided to try and track down Franz. He didn’t know who it was only that he was a pilot during World War II. Ironically, at the 50 year anniversary of the B-17 called the gathering of the Eagles, Charlie attended with other surviving B-17 bomber crews. Franz was present that day as a token German pilot whom flew against them. Sadly, they didn’t meet then. Only meeting years later, when Charlie was successful in tracking him down Ok not so small update…lol Sabaton have a history channel that goes into details of the songs that they produce. It is hosted by Indy Neidell A well known war historian, and the channel is well worth a look

It should be remembered that Franz started his aviation career as a civilian pilot with Lufthansa. His first responsibility was safely delivering his plane and his pessangers; destroying other aircraft as a fighter pilot only came into the picture later. This might partly explain his actions on thet day.

I remember the storys from my grandparents about the air strikes. The british dropped 261.000 bombs and firebombs on my hometown of Hannover in one night alone. :O Not blaming the british for doing that, but the stories of the civilian survivors were horrible. Must be crazy. They still find over 5000 bombs each year in Germany that didnt go of and are buried. I feel like Franz recognized that the plane was no threat to his country anymore and why just kill people for pointless reasons. Also his commander who served in WW1 told the group if he sees one of them ever shoot down for example people in parachutes or surrendering soldiers he will execute them himself. The question also always remains are the people that fight the war really enemies or is it the people that send them to war? There is an extended video of the two guys in a documentary that si definitely worth checking out.

"Indeed, that's how it is for those who drop bombs, for people like me, a bombardier sitting in the Plexiglas nose of a B-52, operating my bombsight, observing flashes of light below as the bombs hit, but seeing no human beings, hearing no screams, seeing no blood, totally unaware that down below there might be children dying, rendered blind, with arms or legs severed." Howard Zinn, "The Bomb" Howard Zinn served in WWII and worked on Bomber planes too. I hope Sabaton writes a song about all the innocent victims of war.
