I saw this on Broadway and at 6:26 the audience broke out in applause followed by a larger thunderous applause at the very end. They nailed this song on stage, both theatrically and musically.
I got to be Lumiere for my musical theatre production, and this song alone is what made me change my goals of being a performance musician to a theater major. Thank you Monsieur Lumiere, you've been one of a kind.
I just finished doing the school play, I wasn't lumiere but man. it sucks when it ends, you're going to meet SO many new people and its great. the singing and dancing is great.

I was the little library girl in this and a sugar bowl in a off broadway version of this last year, one of my favorite experiences about this how is when my choir teacher and her family came. I didn’t think she would come since the tickets were $45 but she came and said this: My son Joey is never Impressed with anything but during be our guest he was shocked, frozen, and had his mouth open the whole time. I’ve never been so proud in my whole life. Being a twelve year old in a off broadway play had its challenges but it was SOOOOOOO WORTH IT!!!!!!!
@@reguluscummins878 slayyyy. Lmao I have no idea why I said that I was in an off Broadway production of this. It was a regional production… I was so dumb istg
i play madame de la grande bouche at my college production, and because of that, the director told me to sing the soprano solo at 6:34, and the guy who plays lumiere said it was his favorite part of the entire song haha, it's literally so much fun!
I played Lumiere in my school’s production of this and it was so much fun! He’s an amazing character to perform and despite the copious songs, dances and lines I had to learn with no outside experience of theatre it was still amazing and I’m proud of everyone involved. This song was the highlight of my performance- my candles cut into my fingers and before this song began my finger ended up bleeding but the pure adrenaline of this song meant I didn’t notice until I got offstage. I’m gonna miss this performance and the cast with my whole heart, and I’m so glad I got to perform one of my dream roles 💛
Sophomore year I did this production at school (I was in ensemble, got the role of a fork.) but unfortunately, it turned out terrible. We used our school orchestra for the music but they were so late on the cues because the choir teacher who was in charge of them, spent too much time on the actors voice training instead of practicing with the band correctly so the orchestra had about a week to get all the songs memorized for the musical. The choreographers were pretty harsh on us despite doing our best after practicing for so long and gave us near panic attacks when it came time for testing day; had we failed to get the dance routine correct- we would be taken out of the dance line. (They never did.) Almost everyone complained about their parts and we nearly cancelled the musical because of that. The drama teacher chose her favorites anyways for the parts, most of the girls with lead parts turned into such divas and acted like such hotshots with inflated egos. (Especially senior girl who got chosen to play Belle, she was the worst. I'm not kidding, the girl was so rude by the time we got halfway through rehearsals and she acted like she was better than everyone else. Opening night, her boyfriend couldn't make it because he had college night classes to graduate and she ranted about it in rehearsal the whole time. Two months after the musical, I see her locking lips with another guy on his car. Felt sorry for her ex boyfriend, gave her a ruby heart shaped promise ring with the hopes to marry her someday after college and treated her like a princess. Meanwhile, she just stomped on his heart in return. Ugh.) It was just a big mess of a production, I was glad to be in the musical but it could have gone better.
Tsumiki Mikan oml. Last year my theatre class did it (because of mental issues I just did odd job helping) and our teacher got fired within a month of casting. A permanent sub came in (who happened to have a theatre teaching degree, thank god) and managed to pull it all together despite being told by literally everyone that it would never work. And it turned out really good! I’m so sorry that you’re didn’t go well.
My high school is doing it this year and ngl I hope it turns out better than yours did. We have some snobby people that get leads every single year because the director plays favorites and it's extremely annoying.
One of the things I loved about Gary Beach when I discovered this show was how much he truly loved playing Lumiere and he really was perfect for the role. Heaven is happier with this wonderful being up there. I so wish they had professionally record the full show with him and Terrence Mann, I'd do anything to see them. All the great things happened before I was born :'(
Can we just take some time to appreciate Babette? She's so underrated and overlooked in the musicals! Like 6:34 those high notes in such rapid frequency I'm shooketh :O
@@heartbrokeinninc.3259 No - I did the musical last summer and that line was Babette's, I believe. Our Babette actress sang those notes and she did fabulous!
I have the honor of being Belle at my Community College's production this year! I'm ecstatic-so many talented people to work with, and, an opportunity to fine-tune my craft further. Thank you for uploading this to give me another perspective of Belle :-D
hey!! are you auditioning for lumiere? good for you! i just got finished with this show, and let me tell you, lumiere is one of my favorite roles i have ever played. he's just the best! try not to be too nervous. just have fun and find his moments, cuz he has lots of 'em. if you're doubting yourself, especially if you think they won't cast you because of your gender, don't worry! i was almost completely sure i wouldn't be cast in a role like lumiere since i'm a girl, but after lots of hard work and a little bit of luck, i got the part! break a leg in your auditions kids :)
Actually solid advice, especially the gender role stuff. I’m auditioning in two days and my biggest worry is not getting the part because I’m a girl, so it’s good to know other productions have cast female lumieres before. Thanks man
AAC0813 the napkins have a special dance number in this song. They actually work harder than the leads and have more talent when it comes to choreography.
They did the same with mine! I was Lumiere, and we had to cut because we didn’t have enough time with the choreographer to get everything perfect, so it was axed. I still miss my tango part!
halfthefiber I think Evan got confused cause he thought Ian Mackelin was playing lumeire because of his deep voice. Lumeire had a deeper voice than cogsworth in the original version
I’m in a production at school and we open tomorrow! I can’t wait it’s going really well so far and we’ve been rehearsing for 6 months now. Wish me luck!
Luke Cammack we're doing it this year, cast list haven't come out, I can give as much French as an entire cast of Les Mis, but I also have about as much experience in dance, so I'm terrified
Lumeire I can just imagine the high schooler that was lumeire doing body rolls in the beggining, because we just did this musical in our school and he did do that. Also my brother wich was a nife doing the line kicks 😂😂😂😂

if they did not play this wonderful song in the movie i was going to walk out of the door. and you know what they played it and i stayed the whole movie. Emma Watson was so good in it and she was really a Beauty and wow, wow, wow, wow, wow lovely and wow again. i love every min.
6:23 If I wanted to play Lumiére I would show off my inner Lin Manuel: (Course by course) *WHAT?!* (one by one) *WHAT?!* (Til you shout) *WHAT?!* (Enough I’m done) *WHAT?!*
1:57 My favorite verse! If I was included in the original Broadway production, I would take that verse as a solo here, except for when the women sing, "It's a treat for any diner…" and the men sing, "Singing pork, dancing veal…" and I trill on the next line, "How could anyone be gloomy or depreEeEeEeEssed?", and then everyone comes in on "We'll make you shout encore…"
Seeing that in the 2017 movie that remakes the cartoon upon which this play is based, they changed the line "Ten years we've been rusting" to "Too long we've been rusting" and got rid of the line that the rose would bloom until the Prince's 21st year to eliminate all ability to pinpoint how old the Prince was when the spell was placed upon him, can future performances of this play have the same edit? If they could fix this mistake when they made the 2017 remake movie, they can fix it in the play's script.
