This happened to me every time the shopkeeper wouldn’t let me leave. Bought like double the items and I am a regular there so you can imagine. Not a makeup store tho but can relate
This is why when me and my mum went to a shopping holiday in China. they seperate me from my mum. I will only take on the sale if I was to spend this type of money anyway ,gift etc.
Not compared to 5$ for 10 masks. (It's a way of saying she got all that for 50 but 'all that' wasn't something she needed lol. Please stop obsessing over the no. '5'!) 🙆♀️
Assuming she didn’t go above the $100, right? That’s what always gets me so really I pay like $75 bucks plus tax instead of the $36 total I would’ve paid 😅
I lived in central Gangnam for 1.5 years within 10 minutes walk of 5 different Olive Young stores... It was DANGEROUS!!!! The nearest one was directly opposite my apartment building. They would put sales items outside on the street to draw you in and once you are in... It is impossible to leave without buying something, especially with their constant 1+1 promos. My brain kept telling me "you only have one face, how much skincare can it absorb?!"... But my heart wanted mooooooooooore
My mom would kill me if I bought more than I want. We don't have space in my home so no way but still I think I would have said fine for the 20 face masks and said I don't need more.
It’s not actually too far off from my experience at Korean stores in NYC - just not for face masks, since most of those are cheap. (Except, naturally, the ones I like best. 😂)
@@jenndflash Go to Koreatown - I'm not sure what's open anymore, thanks to the pandemic. I think The Face Shop, Besfren, and Nature Republic are still there, but just wandering around and enjoying should be worth it - and if the wine bar/BBQ restaurant is still there? They were still great the last time I was there (which again, pre-pandemic). I think they were called Dons Bogam. The TonyMoly in Koreatown closed; the space was taken over by Kosette - I haven't been inside but the layout looks almost identical, and I've heard they have a great selection. There is still a TonyMoly in Tribeca, down on Canal Street. I do still think it's worth going to - it's not far (well, note: I'm from California, NOTHING is far in Manhattan), and for reasons I don't entirely understand, they sell a few other brands besides themselves, including CosRX. If you head down there, oo35mm is apparently a great place to pick up Asian sunscreens like Biore Japan. One thing to remember: as great as the deals may be, it's still going to be cheaper to order from YesStyle (or a few other online shops). But you get the ability to see things in person, swatch makeup, etc, if you go into the stores, and that plus IMMEDIATE makes up the cost difference for me.
Yeah it is a good deal, that’s the point. The problem is you end up with all this extra stuff you don’t need 😂 I always save the extras to give as gifts though so it’s always a win win for me
@@FANI-NI yesss😂😂me too, my souvenirs to my friends when I get back from South Korea are all the extra product/gift/sample the shop gave me🤣🤣and my friends love it
But you still spent more than what you initially wanted to get.which is the point. They are playing you, giving you all these deals and free stuff so you can keep coming back thinking you got a good deal.
& this is why I go to Korea with 2 suitcases, 1 empty and 1 partially full and end up leaving with 3 suitcases because I have too much stuff. LOL. But the way I see it, the extra items can be gifts for your friends and all they care about is that it came from Korea.
True thts usually y we buy stuff alot of stuff because of tht. Need to bring stuff back as gifts as it is a cultural thing in my family with her friends are the same culture so yeah
This is why my sister said, "Why do you have all these products? Are you really going to use all of this? Are you insane?" when she came to visit me. The answer is YES. I'm going to use ALL of it and my skin will be super nice.
Just came back from Korea... this exact scenario happened to me lol. My wife was shook. One luggage bag was dedicated to 'discounted' products I didn't realize I needed
Don't forget when you enter the store and immediately there is staff walking behind you, ready to help you at anytime and giving unecessary advice :D Honestly I'm still hurt from that one time one of the staff talked about my 'wrinkles' because of my age (she didn't know my age).. I was 19 at the time💀
Do you have pale skin? Then it’s normal for them to talk about your wrinkles because many pale skinned people already have wrinkles at young age because of the sun.. don’t purposely tan in the sun without sunscreen!
She went from spending 36 dollar to 50 on products she doesn’t need. While it may seem like a really good deal. I worked retail ( a life time ago) long enough to know that it’s not. The products are worth far less than they are priced. They also use tactics like making stuff with less quantity expensive vs stuff with quantities that no one could ever possibly use up seem cheap. It’s like Walmart and Pain Meds. The Name Brand cost a lot for 24 pills while Walmart Brand has like 200 pills in two bottles that are the same price. It is the clerks job to upsell the other products using “promotions” to make the consumer to think they are saving money. But in reality, they want you to spend more than you originally planned.
I mean i get your point but if ten face masks were 36$ because the other ten were free, then all that cleaner, serum, wrinkles stuff, sunscreen, premium pack, samples and the gift bag were only 14$ combined. Which in the original price is only like 3 face masks? So that doesn't seem bad really. Can't imagine just sunscreen and cleanser is worth less than three face masks.
The “Name brand VS House brand” thing is depends on the country. It’s might be true in Walmart case. But in some countries (especially the poorer ones), the cheaper House brands are actually worse. It’s genuinely you get what you pay for situation. I guess depends on customers behavior, they are more price sensitive.
Yup. I was an Esthetician at a Franchised Spa. They wanted us to upsell while doing a facial which was so tacky and against the whole ethos of providing a relaxing treatment. Then they want you to sell products at the end of the service which they teach you to do in school as part of your income and to encourage better skincare for the clients. So a client books a service, pays for it, tips because that's customary here in the US and then may or may not be upsold during a facial or treatment, and encouraged to buy product at the end of the service and re book for a later date. It's never just cut and dry one fee. That's with majority of the beauty service industry. That's part of their job to make money and make as much as possible off you.
I know this is beside the point but it's mad you can get pain Meds in so many in a bottle. In the UK you can only ever buy 2 small packs of pills unless specifically prescribed by a Dr. It's to stop people overdosing. Sure, they could go to multiple shops but hopefully that added time is enough to save a life 🤷♀️. You couldn't just go into a local shop and get 200 painkillers in one go!
It’s funny because it’s true. My first time in Korea we ended up buying a suitcase to fit all the extra skincare! 😂 All I needed was lip balm to replace the one I’d lost on the bus. 😂😂😂 Learned my lesson!
@@ntmn8444 o it was 35$ as there were 10 extra masks anyway additionally to the 10 she wanted to begin with Really don't know where you live where 10 masks only cost 5$ lol
I don't think this is a scam after all it's all a good value thing, just because you spend money on unnecessary things it's not a scam unless you lose money for nothing you just boost your adrenaline to buy it
To be fair, as the 10 pack of face masks was $36, with the discount she only paid $14 more than she originally intended yet she got a tonne of stuff. If she can afford the extra & it's items she's going to use it's not really a scam as such?
How exactly was she scammed? The 20 masks alone were 36$ With just an extra cost of 14$ she got 100 masks instead & all of the other stuff. The realization that math isn’t your thing…
This actually happened to me while shopping online. Every time I’m about to check out some more discounts will be applied if you spend more. I ended up getting $100 worth of clothes and paid around $30 for it lol
Keep some extra for yourself, and set the rest aside for presents, or to donate to people in need. The only time spending a certain amount to get a reward is worth it is if you were planning to spend around that much money in the first place, and the reward is worth it. Otherwise, you're better off ignoring these kind of promotions. They're obviously designed to make you spend more money, but if you don't have the extra money, you can end up broke with a bunch of things you don't need. Wait until you can make one larger purchase of several things you actually need, so you can properly take advantage of the promotion.
It depends really on how you go about it. I went today to buy my favorite ice tea. I was about to take a box of 10 and look at there! 40% discount on exactly the product I use all the time anyway and that doesn't turn bad too fast! So I got 3x10 instead and stock up.
Reminds me of my experience at olive young, they were having their yearly anniversary in December and I just wanted to go get a mist real quick but then they told me if I got products worth $50 or more I'd get this free box of goodies, I caved lol but the goody box was huge and definitely worth it, introduced me to so many different and great korean skincare brands
I felt like this at Bath & Body Works the last time I ever went there. I only wanted one or two bottles of body spray, they had a "buy three, get two for half off" deal (something like that) so I was like sure, I'll stock up on them! Welp, here I am, don't know how many years later, and I think I'm still only on my *second* bottle because I don't really use it that often.. The other three bottles have been sitting under my bathroom sink, haven't touched in years, lol
I worked at BBW for about 5 years and they will do ANYTHING to make their numbers. After closing, they would ask all of us employees to buy stuff to increase sales. Uh, no. I got bills to pay.
I used to work at a B&BW - they always had the “Buy 2, get one free” or “buy 3 get 2 free” on the signature collection. All. The. Time. I left cos the management hated me as I didn’t upsell, just helped people get what they needed. Turns out they hated me cos the mgmt was stealing money and I wasn’t in on it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It’s been 8 years since I worked there and I still have bottles from getting gratis/free stuff I’m using up. 😂
@@Iceechibi - fortunately, I didn’t have managers that horrible. I actually got along with them. But I always opted out of buying stuff to make numbers. I was same as you - I just helped to get they NEEDED. I say hi, ask if they need help, and go from there. I didn’t waste their time on telling the sales because they were posted everywhere. Odd how customers don’t want to be bombarded - SHOCKING!
Use them in your laundry in the dryer or air drying, or even as air freshener if you still like how it smells. Putting it in your bath water is also an idea.
Yup. When I went to Korea I spent 60% of the time shopping for face stuff. Filled my whole luggage with free samples. Got so many free mask that I end up using it everyday in exchange for my night cream. There are no where to fit in the luggage!!
That happened to me on my first visit to Seoul. I didn’t speak Korean and the shop employee didn’t speak English. I was staying in a non-tourist area. Somehow I ended up with a ton of face masks and a lot of samples. Thankfully my DH was patiently waiting outside of the store.
I love these kbeauty stores because of the freebies automatically. At Sephora you need to ask for them. One time I was trying to find a specific make up with Gudetama (my favorite character)on them. They had them: the colors are so pretty!
Yeah right?! Like pulling teeth!! Come on! Give me. They're for customers!! Are you hoarding for yourselves? (That's what I think they take for themselves).
I also loved how you would get lured in with face masks samples lmao I still have a bag full of them even after 4 years after living there for a while💜
To be fair I fell in love with Korean cosmetics shops and products and the staff was so nice and recommended awesome stuff that I loved. It's so easy and inviting (a bit too inviting, my poor wallet and travel luggage)
YES 🙌 that's me in a Korean Beauty Shop. I am all about skincare. It's also why I have a giant suitcase dedicated to just my beauty products when I travel.
I wish in my country would be something like this. I totally would be glad to spend money like this. I`m always looking for sales because that`s the only way I can by something expensive.
relate!! and it's not only one store, almost all shops along myeongdong have the same promo so you'll end up buying a lot of items from at least 10 shops...i wanna go back to korea huhu
Pretty much exactly what my experience was in Olive Young. I was just getting masks for coworkers as gifts... Now I'm addicted to skincare I can only buy online. :'(
So true, every beauty store in Flushing are like this. I shop there more than I do in Sephora and Ulta. So many products for cheap prices, seriously good quality too
Been there, done that! I was even told, when you hit 400 bucks, we will ship it to you so that you don't need to lug it back. OK! I'M SOLD! I ended up spending 600 bucks in just one store. sigh~~~
The struggle is real!! On the bright side, I've discovered an enjoyment of building beauty/skincare gift bags from my obscenely ample supplies (mostly Korean products)!
What do u mean the samples aren't for free I usually don't get more than they tell me but I don't understand the tactic. If I got something and they are giving some for free thts fine not more than tht. And so no thank you I really didn't know they did tht though.
lmao this is why my family doesnt let me go to the mall and other such places alone... I once ended up trapped in a salon for like over an hour because this guy was trying to sell me all these skin products.... I had to meet my sister and cousin and they were like three stores down at the food court waiting. Eventually I got away, but they were like, about to pull a rescue operation to break me out, I was stuck. Man really knew how to side-step my polite attempts to leave. :|
The last time I went to Korea we bought so much we came back with an extra luggage bag that came free with our purchases, which we then used to fill with our purchases. It was insane. We had masks for life. 🤣🤣
This is why I did delivery business for my friends who don’t live in Korea. I essentially made them pay for my shopping trip. I got the extra stuffs while getting money from them. Sell the stuffs at the normal price even if you get the promos. It works wonders.
It is actually a great deal. Buying Korean skincare overseas 5 products already get u close to $100 and no samples. Uh! I tried out Olive Young bought 2 packages over $170 with no samples.
I saw this when I went there back in 2016. They even give away entire sets of hand creams and skincare. If you’re using their products and are planning to use them for a longer time it’s a great deal. Because those things costs 50% more to sometimes more than double back home.
