Levon Biss takes sports portraits for a living. He's worked with world-class athletes and published front-page photographs. Wanting a project to work on at home that would combine his passion for photography and nature, he started taking macrophotographs ... of bugs. The result? "Microsculpture-a unique photographic study of insects in mind-blowing magnification." In this short film, Biss explains what is required to portray one insect and delight the audience with an unforgettable viewing experience.
Check out more Microsculpture from Levon Biss.

@@Dwight_ It’s just a wild guess but I personally would part it into head, wings etc. to have defined section on which I’m working on. In one photo it might be that only part of the head, part of the “torso”, some parts of the wings are in focus or “sharp”. If you have to look out for the sharp parts it might be that you end up with thousands of pictures with only single sharp slices of the body. I think it’s just easier to go through all the pictures and only concentrate on the head, then on the legs and so on.

I am both an entomologist and a photographer. This is amazing! I am a junior in college and I am learning about all of the structures on the insect body. The amount of detail God put into these creatures is quite amazing. Through evolution, many things get derived and changed to things you would never think an insect would engineer to have on its body! This video is very inspiring.

They were so fascinating. I wanted to see if someone gave credit to God for these amazing creatures, without them, life wouldn't exist. I saw you mentioned God, then evolution. There is so much evidence in a Creator, how could these intricate little critters come about by chance, or slowly? When I look around a the wonders of Creation, that's how I know there is a God. And one with a sense of humor. 👍

@@lads.7715 How can there exist pleasure and happiness, without the existence of suffering and horror? Couldn't an alternate version of our reality include tortures that are orders of magnitude worse than we can even fathom? I think we'd probably imagine a reality like ours and think it must be heaven. In a reality far more comfortable and uneventful than this one, what's to stop us from treating a simple breaking of a leg as an absolute tragedy? IMO it's worth considering that our notions of these extremes are purely calibrated to our existence and experience, and our universe is not inherently good or evil. Maybe this nuanced reality can't be pointed to as evidence of god, but I don't think it can be used as disproof either.

Are you not aware that he's using an objective lens from an electron microscope? The objective lens is mounted on the camera lens for the higher magnification that you see in the images. He's probably using the 5X objective lens and he can go all the way to the over 40X objective lenses.

K Kim , he's using objectives from an optical microscope, a scanning electron microscope doesn't have any optical components at all. Awesome work!

Insects may be deemed as vulnerable to humans but seeing them this close --- we might want to think about that again. The complexity of their outside mind-blowing aaa
