Pastor Brian Zahnd talks about what the quote from Dostoyevsky's book "The Idiot" means to him.
The internet connection on my end was not very good during this recording, so I'm sorry for the various glitchy moments in the video.

The Orthodox Church has always emphasised beauty and the sacramental nature of its devotional art. Icons are not just images of a restored creation and divinised humanity, they are windows into or fragments of a reality already transfigured and redeemed by Christ's Resurrection.

The Taj Mahal, the Buddhist temples in Kyoto, the Hindu caves in Ajanta, the Winged statue of the goddess Victory, the temple to Athena on the Acropolis... such beauty will indeed save the world.

Will any Christian monuments save the world too, or do you just find beauty in far away places to show everyone how tolerant, open-minded and virtuous you are?

Can you believe, last night my wife and I had a meeting with a high ranking Professor of Criminology. During our conversation I mentioned your book and barely a few hours later this is appearing on this channel. I forwarded it to Dr.Graham.

This whole complex of BEAUTY / UGLINESS of the crucified God in Christ is containing the REAL TRUTH of the gospel - by covering beauty with ugliness there happens a mirroring of what is means to be in Christ, Col 3:3 - our lives are hidden with Christ in God, ἀπεθάνετε γάρ, καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν κέκρυπται σὺν τῷ Χριστῷ ἐν τῷ Θεῷ· This also illustrates flaws of two mental conclusions: AESTETICIZATION as exclusively focussing on BEAUTY appears to be a lie in covering up the ugly truth of reality. But the opposite alone - adoring UGLINESS - appears wrong too! Gospel - according to Paul identical with Christ, Rom 1:16 & 1 Cor 1:24 (Christ = dynamis theou = euangelion theou) - does not mean BEAUTY or UGLINESS alone, but both & more! God means the ultimate reality, or in Pauline terms, has to do with ALL! 2 Cor 5:18 tells of all being from God, τὰ δὲ πάντα ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ. And Rom 11:39 has a "trinity of ALL" - all comes from God, all is processed by God & all comes back to God, ὅτι ἐξ αὐτοῦ καὶ δι’ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰς αὐτὸν τὰ πάντα· Christ is boss over all forces in creation, beautiful & ugly, good & evil, Col 2:10 - ὅς (= Christ) ἐστιν ἡ κεφαλὴ πάσης ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐξουσίας. Now we know only in part (ἐκ μέρους), 1 Cor 13:9. But God views us completed in Christ, Col 2:10 using a perfect participle - καὶ ἐστὲ ἐν αὐτῷ πεπληρωμένοι. Otherwise said, we are considered whole, completed & finished in Christ here & now! Even in all miseries, contradictions, imperfections & sufferings we experience! Paul goes that far as he picks up an old term from Ecclesiastes 1:2 haval havalim = הֲבֵ֤ל הֲבָלִים֙ = vanity of vanities in Rom 8:20 from the LXX, the term ματαιότης = vanity, senselessness & declares this in negative psychology style as ordained from God "normal lifestyle"- it is no wonder that Rom 8:20 ends with ἐπ’ ἐλπίδι = in hope - τῇ γὰρ ματαιότητι ἡ κτίσις ὑπετάγη, οὐχ ἑκοῦσα, ἀλλὰ διὰ τὸν ὑποτάξαντα, ἐφ’ ἑλπίδι! Yes, brother Brian Zahnd, Dostojevsky is the kicker! Thank you sooo much for having brought that up! When I after three strokes found myself totally frustrated & devastated in a wheelchair and got visited from Christ - I don´t know if I would still live today! I immediately perceived the completeness of God surpassing all my human imagination, and since then my eyes are always watering whenever I remember Christ! And I have the impression that I have become more peaceful in my mind! I simply know that I am loved by God! And that God encompasses all that exists & happens. Beauty & ugliness. Good & evil. I can live with more unanswered questions than answers. Kindest regards from Germany! Thank you again for your thoughts, Brian Zahnd & Love Unrelenting!

not believing that god or christ exists as described is not a deal-breaker. transcendence can rise above 'actualities'. beauty is what make truth important. beauty is what makes good important. religion is a huge amalgamation of many easily ignored details. but many things of importance jump out at atheists like me. beauty transcends details.

An Apologia for idolatry. There is nothing beautiful about what happened to Jesus. All Christian Universalists need to put away all this ugly iconography, Mr. Zahnd. And while we're at it, stop celebrating Roman Calendar pagan festivals. ~Steven of Montreal

Please hold a little back for Christ´s sake, Mister Frasier! And follow the spirit of God working in you! Are you not aware that humans have a tendency of imitating beauty in art? You call it IDOLATRY, and maybe you are right! But see clear - gospel matters are never ultimate matters of wrong or right, but moreover of love & respect! What makes you so upset, Mister Frazier? Do you want to be more papal than the pope? You criticize the celebration of pagan festivals in the Roman Catholic Calendar? You are dead right, brother! But that doesn´t touch the core of gospel matters, which is Christ! And Christ is the human face of God! And God became human, because He loves fun & foolishness, does He not? So hold a little back for Christ´s sake & for providing God a little fun! PS: What you call "ugly iconography" might not help YOU, but countless other humans loving Christ - it helps them strongly to remember Christ. And what is wrong with that? Have mercy on them! Love & peace from Germany! Please watch this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WJ-QFOqp9TE.html

@@paulpaulsen7245 I stand by my comments and have held back far more than you know, for there is much that back up said comments. If you care to know. Or, maybe you do know, and don't care. I for one desire the FULL counsel of God, as wonderful as it is to know that ALL shall be saved. All I'm saying is to show God our gratitude by depaganizing our Faith. Why drag the baggage of the mainstream into the comeback of Biblical Universalism?! ex: Easter is Ashtoreth, the fertility goddess -- Passover is BIBLICAL, so why not celebrate that instead?? ex: The cross is the unwarranted capital punishment of an innocent man -- He's resurrected & ascended, why stand ye gazing at an implement of Death? ~Steven of Montreal

@@paulpaulsen7245 In all actuality, it is your perception, Paul, that I impend upon Freedom, when in Truth I am promoting Truth, and Freedom -- and all within my God-given right to exercise Free Speech, concerning yet more "insights & understandings". Once again, it behooves us to eschew pagan festivals and religious imagery. So, there ya go, Mr.Folks -- you're free to follow these admonishments, or not. Are you implying that I'm not free to admonish? To reproof? ~Steven of Montreal

Brother, Don't you see beauty in the Christ reclaiming everything that belongs to him? While the enemy though he got him killed, Jesus was laying down is own life, went down to hell, destroyed death and reclaim the souls of the righteous. Our lord Jesus put back in order what had been inverted (been put upside down by the enemy, the demons and their followers). The cross was used as a symbol of death by the Romans and it is now a symbol of the tree of life. A d regarding pagan festivals: time and space belong to God. When a Christian Holiday take place above/over a pagan festival, it is God reclaiming that time and space. Demons worshippers stole that time and space and we are taking it back by the power of the Holy Trinity. God bless you.
