Dostoevsky's Book The Idiot: amzn.to/45slKKs
Dostoevsky was a 19th-century Christian existentialist writer. In this (hyper-interpreted) video, we try to figure out what kind of life could assert that "beauty will save the world."
This video's style is largely inspired by the following channels:
‪@PursuitofWonder‬
‪@boyinthebadlands‬
The Dostoevsky Archive (1997) - Peter Sekirin
The Idiot (1869) - Fyodor Dostoevsky
Nobel Lecture in Literature (1970) - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn www.nobelprize...
Other sources are informal.
Dostoevsky's other great books:
Demons: amzn.to/3YP9bpW
Crime and Punishment: amzn.to/47RttDl
The Brothers Karamazov: amzn.to/3PfToO4
Notes From the Underground: amzn.to/3KYZHCV

i've always said the same. experiencing beauty is self transcending and for a moment you forget about all suffering or your own painful ego. i'm extremely angry because those in power are trying to take beauty away from the common population. beauty is what gives meaning to our lives, it gives people a reason to fight for themselves.

I love that book. I only read it about a year and a half ago and it was perfect timing with everything that was going on in my life. I loved reading about his internal struggles, his defense of his sister, his compassion towards Sonya and her family, his gradually slipping mask of sanity, him staggering to the police office for his confession and his new view on life as he is in Siberia. I wish I read him in high school. I only made it through the first few chapters of Brothers Karamazov in hs and gave up. I recently finished that masterpiece a little over a year ago. I think that to understand his writings you have to had experienced suffering in a mental or social capacity resulting in loneliness, isolation and/or despair. If one denies and dismisses the pain of suffering in their life and lives superficially, it's harder to see what he is trying to tell us. Even then his psychological insight is so keen that he can show you yourself even if you don't wish to see it.

I feel like I relate to this guy on a spiritual level and he was a great philosopher. The importance of beauty is often underestimated. If people dont see the beauty in the world they may not get the feeling there is truly something to protect and something to live for. We could fail to save the world because too many people found it not worth saving and making an effort. A lack of beauty and lack of hope is dangerous. And beauty makes life feel meaningful and and actually worth living. Beauty is there originally in nature but humans often ruin it. Tragic life, I feel sorry for what him and his friends went through. At least he didn't completely lose sense of hope

I’m about 3/4 finished with The Brothers Karamazov, it’s an incredible novel. Beauty has indeed been a lost element, especially in today’s modern times. I love how unironic romance is in classic novels like this one. I got that sense from Hemingway as well, Romance was a real and true thing that was embraced and revered as beautiful. In the last 50 years or so it’s become something joked about or just sort of nonexistent. Sitcoms ruined romance. The meaning of love in a spiritual form has been watered down so incredibly since the 60s. The word needs true, unironic beauty. It exists, the world is beautiful and the more time goes by in my life the more I revel in it.

Beauty too can improve humanity as a whole due to the fact that if a beautiful person were to appear to a not so beautiful person, the person will feel inadequate and most likely will imitate that beautiful person and even surpass it and one day someone will surpass that person too and the cycle will continue until the humanity itself embodied "beauty".

I absolutely agree. I even think the overall sense of beauty people have on a large scale, could determine the fate of the world. Whether people truly have a sense of there is something to protect and preserve or they dont see the point. It can hugely impact what effort people make, what they value and how they act. Valuing life itself (whether were talking individual lives or species preservation, or the right for each one to have a good life and certain rights) requires seeing beauty in life. And I think people more overall content are naturally kinder (but some can still suffer a lot and yet have a lot of compassion)

Beauty really is something special. Looking at a vase of flowers can really lift my mood. Being in nature can relax me. Art hanging on a wall creates interest and is inspiring. I love to see it when people try to create beauty in simple ways by hanging a flower wreath on their front door or plants on their window sill. A dining table set beautifully or nice decor in a home. Everyone seems to be attracted to beauty even if they don’t appreciate it as much as others.

For me, a piece of art that reaches the ultimatum is björk's vespertine At the surface it may seem simply about love but you should really analyze the lyrics in the second half through a philosophical lens I think those are some of the most mature ensemble of words ever written and the music itself is the sound of heaven

"Beauty" is the ground of being; this is one way of experiencing it. It could also be called "Order" or "Perfection." It cannot be seen at all when reality is divided into beautiful and ugly. In traditional cultures the beauty way is the natural way of life. Seeing beauty is seeing the good and the true, that transcendent light holding all, denying none. Within this field beings may choose blindness to beauty if they wish. Blindness us war, property, competition, struggle.

Did you know? Dostoyevsky was inspired by Friedrich Schiller’s (1795) argument that beauty enhances our moral sensitivity. Russian intellectuals, deeply moved by his poetry, greatly admired Schiller's work.

We should really take his mans advice he knew suffering his friend at 9 years old was raped and killed, he lost his mother and father at ages 15 and 17 his first wife died and 2 of his children died, he like many in this world was closer to pain than he would of liked so for him to encourage those to still have beauty (faith in a better world) when he saw first hand how ugly it can be is pretty incredible and says so much about how resiliant a person with hope can be

It's also important to understand what beauty is to yourself and who gets to define it. Because if we define beauty as a single standard those who don't meet it won't get the same right to life as those who do.
@berserkknightdeadoralive702
I really feel related to Dostoevsky in the last part of the video; I may no have faced the exact same situation he had to confront, but I commited the same mistake that he's describing Guess, one of the worst things you can do to yourself is no giving value to life itself; yours and from everything around you I believe that I finally redeemed myself from that way of thinking, and surely took a long time to learn that, but it was very worth it at the end

I´ve never understood how saturated we are right now by the tyranny of reason and rational until i read Dostoevsky, every discourse online, every discussion has to have a scientific reason or research, everything you do has to have a rational and logical objective or is pretty much worthless, the things that you believe in have to be based on realistic modern standards or they are not valid, i´ve never felt happier until i let go and realized that i don´t have to justify my actions to myself or anyone, i don´t have to rationalize everything i do, i just am.

Beautiful people are the cruelest and most narcissistic, self-serving, complacent, and conceited. Regardless if their beauty comes from their background, family, house, inheritance, health, fitness, and/or education. They're garbage human beings who are extraordinarily haughty and unloving because they only see themselves and those similar to them as human beings. They neither love their neighbor nor their enemies if they are strangers to their existence, experiences, and appearance.

People need to be able to recognize and aspire to experience beauty. It gives us not only appreciation and a moment of life, but something to work towards. This is why ugliness has been weaponized, to teach hopelessness, isolation, pettiness, and fear.

It is very interesting because I'm out time we can now prove that What is seen as beautiful stems out of Harmony and Balance. Beauty in Balance is a type of justice as something is in its most lively state and thus by giving light it enlightens the rest. Without beauty we function but we are NOT ALIVE !!

There is an expression if you want an angel you must create a heaven for her because she can't survive in hell. That's the thing it's not realistic to expect beauty to thrive in ugly circumstances sure sometimes you see a flower growing between some cracks in concrete and maybe marvel at it and it's resilience but it likely won't be there long or much be noticed when it's gone by people who are only expecting the ugly grey concrete anyway.

I do also like Roger Scrutons discussions of "Why Beauty Matters" but of course it doesn't to everyone and it's also a mostly subjective term also. Maybe Russians think their architecture beautiful but they think war and blood in the streets dead men heartbroken women "beautiful" too or expect just the sight of the Kremlin enough to make them forget?

I’ve seen sunsets more beautiful or pleasing to the eyes before, but this sunset in particular was far more beautiful in my mind. I saw not only a sunset but God’s creation. I saw Gods face within the sun and its orange rays of sunlight which shined on fluffy clouds. It’s beauty made me cry tears of gratitude

One could say it is those who have suffered the most, who have been to Hell and back, that have the most appreciation for the beauty in the world. Beauty is like a candlelight, small and easy to miss, yet hypnotic and otherworldly when one takes the time to look at it and appreciate it, especially when it comes close to being snuffed out.
