They bite the wood then wait a little to see if the tree falls. Intelligent!🎉

I think you made the same comment on a similar vid. So I'll repeat: sometimes beavers get smoked by the trees they fell. This little guy ran in the exact direction that the tree came down... into the water mind you, but not the most "intelligent" decision IMO. (From a guy who has multiple beavers on his land and gratefully accepts their offerings of firewood.)

@@civildiscourse2000true. who knows. maybe in the future beaver will adapt or even evolve a way to avoid falling trees 100% effectively. or at least very high. if the world lasts that long
@civildiscourse2000
@civildiscourse2000 5 месяцев назад
@@Mothobius Undoubtedly beavers do less damage to themselves than humans do to beavers _or_ ourselves. They create habitat for many other species while we destroy habitat and drive many species to extinction. So while they do occasionally run afoul of their own engineering efforts, I think humans are the absolute champions of clever self-destruction.

I didnt realize they actually ate the wood . Im not surprised more animals havent evolves that , theres wood everywhere and sure its very hard to digest but insects do it and surely larger animaks could eveolve to eat and digest them

I didn't know this either until just now! I also learned that they favor specific trees for eating and others for building dams. They often prefer to eat things like aspen and poplar but fall the softwood of pine and other conifers to build dams.
@civildiscourse2000
@civildiscourse2000 7 месяцев назад
@@_mycotrophRight on. We have poplar aka trembling aspen and various conifers and mainly if they fell the latter it's by chewing up the roots. They like the soft bits of course - you'll never see a beaver fell anything bigger than a sapling and eat the whole thing. Leaves, twigs, branches and the soft growing layer just under the bark of larger branches and the trunk.

@@civildiscourse2000 I did not know that thanks, and what do you mean have lol do you keep them as pets?
@civildiscourse2000
@civildiscourse2000 7 месяцев назад
@@isaac-vb1ng Kind of. We don't interact with the beavers too much but there's usually a female woodchuck that takes up residence in our yard and pops out a litter every year. The little ones are hilarious to watch rolling around wrestling each other just like kittens or puppies. Once they trust you a bit you can play with them, like if you hold out a stick they'll grab it and bite it and pull on it like a dog. Best pets ever. No vet fees, no kibble cost and they love dandelions. But they do chuck wood - again, sort of. They love to get into the woodpile and given the chance they will burrow underneath it. I learned long ago to put down chicken wire first. 😁
@civildiscourse2000
@civildiscourse2000 7 месяцев назад
I forgot to mention a key piece of information that underscores the difference between woodchucks and beavers: the other common name for woodchuck is groundhog. Beavers and woodchucks are both rodents but woodchucks are smaller and don't have the big flat tail. I've never seen a woodchuck swim although I would bet they could in a pinch.
