This is just one example of the biodiversity that Beavers bring into their created habitat. This is a juvenile male kingfisher, must be from the first brood of the year. The all black beak, grey feet not orange and more of a russet front than orange help to identify it.
There are no fish in the wetlands, as far as we have observed, but the kingfisher has no trouble feeding on the various larvae - such as beetles, damselflies, dragonflies etc.
They must be nesting nearby as there are no suitable sites in the enclosure, the young get pushed out as the adults get on with another brood. I did see a couple of kingfishers quite often last year, again juveniles.
Lovely sight to see after watching the beavers early dawn!
