Beavis & Butthead is actually a fairly intelligent critique of the stupidity of their own audience, and general audiences. It's not so much that they themselves are funny, but what they represent, and the way they represent it, is funny. Mike Judge is great at this. It works the same way in King of The Hill and The Goode Family. Critiques of different American sub-cultures and audiences. Just subtle enough that it can easily be mistaken as genuine. Daria breaks from this a bit, since the show was merely based on a Mike Judge character, and didn't have his direct involvement. Thus, it embraces Daria's views more than making fun of them.

8-23-22 Most of these references just amount to calling someone Beavis or Butt-Head or just talking about the show. Ironically, the children's Cartoons (Arthur and Tiny Toons) made the deepest references to the very *adult* cartoon. I have to give some points to The Critic, Step by Step, Robot Chicken, Celebrity Deathmatch, Family Guy, Littlest Pet Shop, KaBlam!, and Jackass 3D. They at least had some effort added to them. Can't say much about the other ones. With me, an actually good reference has to feature more than just saying the name of the thing you are referencing. It has to take some actual effort. The Arthur and Tiny Toons references took actual effort instead of just saying the name, so I feel like they are actually better than a lot of the rest of them.
