These are the original words of Emily Dickinson.
There are different versions which were "cleaned up" for publication by well-meaning editors and entitled "The Chariot" (Why? It's a carriage) Suspect anything with a missing stanza or which tells of children "wrestling in a ring"
I have no idea what it means or whether there's any literal sense in it at all. However it does convey what it must have been like to be Emily Dickinson.
The authenticity if the photograph is controversial. It's a mirror image, a part of the processing. More information can be found here:

How amazing is it that she sees death as something not to be feared, personifying death as a so ewhat kind and civil person

I'm doing this poem for my English class, thank you for reading it! The dashes throw me off a bit and now I can read it without doing odd pauses.

Camille Paglia has a succinct, entertainingly written explication of 'Because I could not stop for Death' in her book 'Break, Blow, Burn'. This book is also a good general introduction to close readings of poetry.

Thanks so much for posting this. Emily Dickinson is my favorite poet, certainly of any woman poet before or since...

I've always been a little curious about how Dickinson's poems should be read. In general I like to respect the dashes, but respecting the dashes causes some weird breaks and I get the urge to put breaks at line ends where the is technically no dash, such as at the ends of the 5th 6th and 22nd lines. I really wish I knew what was going on in her head for these strange little poems.

All those oddly placed hyphens usually throw me off, but when you read it, the poem actually sort of makes sense! Thanks!

There is only one authenticated photo of Emily, taken in her late teens. There are a couple of others that are controversial. This is one - if it's genuine then Emily is ten years older, at least. About this photo, Dr. Richard Jantz, Forensic Anthropologist, University of Tennessee, says "After comparing several key points--eyes, nostrils, corners of mouth, the fit [between the two photos is quite good . . . .actually pretty impressive and perhaps makes the case well enough..."

Beautiful poem, beautifully read. Could I make a request for "Behind me -- Dips Eternity"?

This sounds different than the one I read in school. Are there different versions, especially the last two lies?

The best treatment of Emily Dickinson's poetry - in the context of her life is Cynthia Griffin Wolff's extraordinary biography entitled 'Emily Dickinson'. The classical critical work on Dickinson is 'Dickinson: the modern idiom' by David Porter. This is one of the most inspired works of criticism that exists. Its central contention has been much disputed; but, its engagement with Dickinson is unsurpassed. It is also a prose masterpiece.
