Certainly his breakthrough track, but I think "Where It's At" off his MUCH bigger album "Odelay" refined this vibe and became a bigger and much more timeless song.
At one point I had every one of his albums, I think sea changes was his masterpiece. Maybe not as innovative and eclectic as his other albums but there isn’t a bad song on it.
Such a great artist. His Morning Phase album, which won the Grammy for album of the year, is amazing and every song on his Colors album is a banger. The man is crazy talented.
Part comical, part sensical, and part Dadaistic. If you listen to Beck's early stuff, that which didn't make the radio, it's quite different from this, but he began working with modern genres and built from there. The funkiest white boy this side of hip hop and rap.
Actually I don't think that's an actual recorded guitar from "Midnight Rider". The riff is the same or similar but the guitar in "Loser" is a strong slide riff. The guitar riff in "Midnight Rider" isn't as aggressive and doesn't sound like slide guitar.
His album Sea Change killed me - when I need to get mellow that is the one my husband and I put on. Guero is also a particular favorite of mine. Beck is just a genius in general.
@ViewsFromThe502 The blur effect at the start is to cover a storm trooper helmet he wears for a bit, had to be removed or face the wrath of Lucas Films. Now nearly 30 years later it would be Disney demanding it not be shown.
I just realized that the intro to the videos are him referencing the original Django with the coffin pulling via the chain-if you didn’t know, that’s why Tarantino called it Django Unchained.
I would swear the dude on the roof was my late brother in-law, he always wore shades jeans and no shirt! Right down to the hair looked exactly like that dude ✌️
Hey guys!!! I'm new to the channel and your reactions are so fun to watch. I just discovered you and immediately subscribed 😊 Can you do Bill whithers Use me and Stevie Wonder Don't you worry about a thing? I'm 55 and I love to see a younger generation enjoying and discovering old school music❤❤❤
There are so many places to go with Beck. I'd recommend E-Pro, The New Pollution, Sexx Laws, Soldier Jane, Profanity Prayers, Dreams... and that's just taking one track each from six albums.
I had a Ms.Rutledge !!!! She was a 60 year old art teacher that would fit in more today way more than she did in 1994. She was crazy as a run overed dog but she was cool af
Teacher names: Anything with the word "apple" As a kid I had a science tea her with name "Bateson"..wondered if his parents had a sense of humor and made his first name "Master"..😂
Not sure if it would be good for your channel, but you guys should check out his album Sea Change on your own time... it's nothing like this and it's absolutely brilliant (very chill). Never been a huge fan of this song, but that album is pretty special.
I was 16 when this came out and it was SO COOL that my mother didn’t like it. You should try “Where it’s at” - it came out a few years later…aaaah…the angsty 90’s…
Good "Victorious" reference... Heard of him, but don't know his songs. The guitar in beginning sounds like out West. Yes there were always the kids in the back sleeping. Most of my teachers wouldn't ask if he was okay they would say "get up". Philly = melted mozzarella. It is unconventional... Not a song i would seek out. Not very positive. But i get that is the point. He seems interesting and like he is pretty thoughtful in his lyrics.
@ViewsFromThe502 Still love you guys just prefer when new to all ! Curtis Mayfield - " Freddie's Dead " ( from Superfly soundtrack 71 ) funky purification version please ( full version ) !! 🙏
old guy but kinda liked this song. By the way have you beat on odd teacher names. My principal in 6 grade was a guy named Richard Herr....figure it out.
Your teacher called Mr. Riddle didn't have the first name Jim. did he? Because in England going for a "Jimmy Riddle" means you're going to take a p*ss. 😁
I always thought and I believe he also stated the lyric mean nothing. It to prove point he could make a hit with lyrics than meant nothing because he was out as not a good at lyrics. Every time I hear this one it reminds me of Eminem My Name is Slim Shadey.
OT1H you guys made some astute comments. OTOH if 2/3 of you have already heard the song and/or seen Beck’s show years ago, then this IS NOT a REACTION video, is it? So I feel kinda clickbaited. Just be honest about what your video is. If I’d known what I was getting, I might’ve liked the video better.

Ahem, ..Nick?? "ess-entrick" is NOT a word, "EX-centric" is. (both of those, there, being "pronunciation keys," NOT, actual words!) Eccentric. [pronounced: "ex-centric"] Get it in your brain, or stop using it (as in: permanently!).
True it’s not a word but maybe Nick was trying to say “esoteric” and it came out “ess-entrick”? That said, I appreciate the call-out bc I have similar annoyances eg when ppl say “agree-ance”, which is not a word. #AgreeMENT ✌🏽
@@gabrielmcdonnell8699 It DOES hit me in a ... uniquely annoying spot. (Those types of things.) 👍👍 ...but, yes: without being "on-site," or knowing people extensively ...it's, sometimes, difficult to, really, know what they were thinking/what they intended. 🤷 🤦 ....
@@ViewsFromThe502 🤷🤷 How would I be aware of that, sir?🤷 ...look: as a public speaker, you hold a fairly large amount of responsibility for: using the language at a higher-standard than, just, "the average schlub off of the streets" (or "whatever "). I get that you are being "informal" and "unpretentious" (🤷🤷), with your friends ...however: you chose to be a public figure in a public venue. Your ability to appear "as an executor at the highest echelons" ..."Sorry": it matters (and has larger effects on society). -Also: I pick-up on stuff like that and... its (perhaps "inexplicably"🤷) personally offensive & irritating, to me. I couldn't keep myself from pointing it out, to you. 🤷
@@ViewsFromThe502 For the future, Nick 🤷 ...here's an idea: if you find that you are, incontrovertibly, "having problems" pronouncing a word... or, simply, "get lazy" ...or whatever-the-case-may-be 🤷🤷🤷, why don't you, simply, write the word down on a piece of paper ("notebook-size" [the classic 8½ x 11 😋], OR larger), hold it up, where the word would go, in your conversation, edit that in and let people read it themselves. 🤷🤷 -That way: you get to use the term that you want ...and everyone gets to understand it and/or learn it, themselves. 🤷
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eyCEexG9xjw.htmlsi=cdu8WY0L9QS230SC I agree with Nick and Ty about the opening line, "In the time of chimpanzees, I was a monkey" being a great "hook" to pull in the listener, if the music hadn't already done so. It could be argued there's also a possible secondary meaning to the line as well. Nick makes a very good point about the main character's lack of evolution, but it seems like Beck and the other songwriter are simply trying to get across the idea that the subject in the song is simply different from all the majority of living things. So, it's a great use to make the line as accessible to as many listeners as possible. I recall when this video was starting to get played on MTV (around the days just before MTV became RTV for "Reality TV"). It was not uncommon for MTV to play some "unconventional" stuff, especially in the early days when they lacked videos to air. The above link is for a video along this same vein from 1982 called "Mexican Radio" by a group named Wall of Voodoo. Most of the time, these out of left field videos simply fell short musically and/or aesthetically. However, as soon as I heard the intro and first line of "Loser," I was wiling to buckle up and experience the seeming craziness going on in the video. It was a case, as the guys can appreciate, their own hometown Louisville legend Hunter S. Thompson's famous line, "By the ticket, take the ride." As a final note, Beck's musical abilities didn't emerge from a vacuum. His father is an extremely well-respected and longtime music arranger, composer, and conductor, working with serious heavyweight artists (from the past and present in several different genres, including his own son) and on many film scores over the years.
