So glad I found your channel!!!! I have been waxing my watercolors for a few years now. I wrap my canvasses in watercolor paper and after painting I wax the entire canvas. I usually use my gloved hands. I'll buy cloths now. Thank you for this!
Karlyn Holman taught the method with rubbing in the wax with fingers and then using a hair dryer on low setting to melt and smooth the wax. It works great and I have 9 year old paintings that still look good.
I've heard this too, from a FB page dedicated to waxing watercolors. They recommend a UV protectant before the thin wax coats. I suppose I should just text it myself, exposing a few fugitive paints on paper to sunlight.
I just heard you shouldn't apply a varnish first to your watercolor and then wax it because the wax can't penetrate the paper and pigment which is how it protects the watercolor. The wax bonds with the pigment and then becoming hard when it cures like a varnish. Spray varnish works as a cover and wax penetrates the pigment and paper making it part of the painting. I still have to look into UV protection but that is also a problem with using regular glass because you have to use very expensive glass to protect from UV.
