From what I am reading Verbeek made some big offers to some bigtime players but they want a chance at the cup over the next few years and passed.

everyone good already signed (most to bad contracts). use that 9mil aav needed to get above cap floor on locking up the core pieces to longer contracts. every year they wait to lock someone up the more it'll cost them in the future. baseball is starting to do this more and more , take 20yr aaa rookies and give them 10+ year deals for a low aav. something like 10yr 150 million (15 million aav) ,, they know by the time his rookie contract is up and they have to compete in free agency he's going to want 25 millon aav. so they saved 10 million and are getting his peak years from 27 - 30.

No rush. The Ducks have decent veterans on the team and really need to focus getting the kids more experience. Next years free agent market will be better anyway.

Verbeek did make offers. Substantial ones for big names players but they had no interest. they want to be on contenders. No big deal the Ducks aren't ready to be cup contenders yet. They also don't need to tank. They will still make a solid jump in overall progress next season but will still probably be a in the later part of the top ten when it comes to the first round of the draft. One more top ten pick will only help them down the line. Also, next years free agent market is potentially much better than this one.

That Verbeek didn't drop down when he knew the guy he wanted wouldn't go top 10 is a brutal misuse of draft capital. Stunning fail. And then he expended a 2nd to move up five spots from 31 to 26. Brutal management.

What Duck my life said. There were strong rumors that Utah was interested in Sennecke and with the Blue Jackets set on Lindstrom and not Demidov the only real trade that could have been made was with the Habs. They seemed content to hold off and get whichever forward landed in their spot (Demidov/Lindstrom/Sennecke). Any more spots ahead of that the Ducks would run the risk of losing who they wanted most. The trade that got them Solberg was gold! Solid gold! He may not be an RD but other than that he is literally, exactly what the Ducks D core needs! Perfect pick and worth the later second round pick all day every day!
