“Work-life balance” assumes lawyers have an option to neatly balance the responsibilities of law practice with life outside of work. But New Richmond attorney Deanne Koll says focusing on being a happy lawyer may be more achievable.
“There are realities in private practice,” Koll said at the 2019 Wisconsin Solo & Small Firm Conference (WSSFC) in October. “I don’t think you can change those realities.”
Koll, an attorney at Bakke Norman Law Offices S.C., says lawyers should stop putting a square peg into a round hole. “We should just accept the realities and move forward from them,” Koll said. “You can’t change the fact that client’s demand 100 percent all the time. You can’t change certain things about practicing.
“All you can do is work within that framework to do something different,” she said. Koll, who gave a full presentation on lawyer happiness at WSSFC, said there’s research on how to be happier at work, and it has nothing to do with work-life balance.
Her number one tip was “embrace the craziness.” She says lawyers can stop apologizing for doing the work that client’s expect. “Just embrace it and say, ‘this is what we’re doing.’ I’m not going to feel bad about taking my laptop on vacation.”
Koll also says lawyers can’t sweat the small stuff. Instead, to talk about the bruises and move on. “There’s other research on what makes us happy,” she said. “Let’s try and do those things because we are never going to achieve this ‘zen’ that doesn’t exist.”

I wasn’t hired for an administrative position after staffing five presidential campaigns and working as a political consultant for a year and a half. This position offered less money than what I’ve made previously. I’ve made $30 and $25 an hour as a tutor and presidential campaign staffer. I think that attorneys should be required to pass the bar in Wisconsin. There are too many high stakes decisions in this field. I’m also solvent with my taxes and have paid over $1,000 to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue for my 2020 income, who charged me twice. I had to call the office to get a refund on the amount, and the DOR staff also did not hire me. I cite the acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse as a major legal failure, as I have literally paid nearly $11,000 to a landlord in Kenosha, and sales tax in the city through food and gas. I lived in the city for nearly a year and a half and worked outside partially for my income supporting a healthcare organization. My sister’s boyfriend, Spencer Ezell is a UW law graduate and in over six figures of debt despite being a practicing bankruptcy attorney. Despite seeing a psychiatrist at UCLA, my first undergraduate institution, UW - Madison kicked me out of university housing because of poor academic performance. I had difficulty waking up on specific mornings. My roommate, a white student who had spent more than four years in college from Virginia also had illegally kept alcohol in the room when I was under 21. I had informed the resident hall manager about this and they allowed him to stay. Additionally, an English professor ripped an exam out of my hand. As COVID testing staff for $17/hr (admin for four months) and swabbing for a month ($20/hr), I found this work so much more rewarding than any prior administrative work I had done.
