I'm going on 30 years as a Lineman... So I will be one of those open positions needing filled when I retire. It is an incredible career! If you have the drive and passion, you can go far. If you don't particularly like hard physical work... You probably would want to find something else. You get out of it what you put into it. I have made an outstanding living financially from this job. Pay attention, your reputation is everything, especially as an apprentice. Don't be "that guy". Be the one they can rely on. Good luck!

I’ve been a wiremen apprentice for 2 years and I’m switching gears to the line side. Im excited, I originally interviewed when I was getting out of active duty and didn’t get in the first time. Got picked up for wiremen but I still wanted to go the line route so interviewed again with my local. Just got notification that I’m going to our locals boot camp. I will say military folks do really well within the IBEW from what I have seen.

It is because we respect you guys. We truly value you. Lineman make sacrifces, but not to the extent of the trauma our veterans take on. Best of luck, I have worked for IBEW 258 and 424, starting with another IBEW 254 in the new year. It is a rewarding trade full of great men. Good luck. Hey man just curious is nlc worth it and is it required for work in California? I have a family member with a pole set in his yard to teach people (he’s been saying don’t go to the school and get a foot in the door at a utility then transfer to line once in) so I’ve been climbing on that and studying the “lineman and cablemans hand book” by Thomas m shoe maker. Also a couple of electrical theory books I have from my inside wireman schooling.
@Bootysnorkler707
@Bootysnorkler707 9 месяцев назад
It’s not required for work in California. California can be hard to get into regardless of your background. Nlc isn’t really a requirement to get your foot in the door but it helps and will definitely get you ahead of the pack but it’s not cheap

Everyone is different. When I started, we had the old style brown belts. No fall protection. Now i'm a certified Pole Climbing instructor. And I promise you that SuperSqueeze will NOT let you fall. Just keep your 9 and 3 o'clock spacing and trust your belt. We usually get guys up to 30 feet by end of week one. 60 feet by the end of week two. And everyone has to climb the Big Guy.... 100 foot pole to graduate. Trust the process, you'll be fine.

@oky7111
@oky7111 Год назад
@@joshp.4127 as a 1.5 apprentice for the utility in FL, The washout is due to the extremes really. It is very much a hard job, if you arent liked by people you will likely be pushed away/out as is with most blue collar jobs. You also will be put in situations you do NOT want to be in whether relationship wise with peers or actual on the job real sketch/hazardous situations. I also come from a line school and I thought I had a slight understanding of what id be getting into but the knowledge necessary is equal to that of a degree. These guys (real certified journeyman linemen) know so much its stupid. They would do everything themselves if they could. I currently have on my floor 5 books of current past and future knowledge requirements and it can be easily overwhelming if you do not have a life behind the job, or were never a good student, or maybe you have kids and are having a hard time with missing their recitals and working weekends, and having to play with them after working for 18 hours. Im not saying also that other jobs dont experience this but what I am saying is many of these lineschools or people who promote the linemen trade dont talk about this or stress these points enough. You will be teased, mocked, tested, ridiculed, judged, and have no sympathy toward you. The people that stand out are those who can continue past that. All this and its SIGNIFICANTLY better than it was 10/20/30 years ago where all this was MUCH worse with basically friends would control who gets a job and who survives.

Lineman school. I’m going from trucking to lineman school. Ain’t afraid of hard work though, grew up on a farm. If you can get into an apprenticeship with local union, great otherwise you’re looking at 15k-25k for lineman school. And either way, you start as apprenticeship and at the bottom as groundsman so the least paid. About 20-26hr

@joshuastevens5910 Год назад
@@youngsiles17 A CDL is required anyways for lineman, don’t necessarily have it easier. It’s more of a, who you know type of thing. And if go union route, better impress them journey lineman to get that golden ticket to make the big money. Just like with trucking, don’t become a lineman for the money. The industry will make or break you. That’s how trucking is, there’s regional companies(smaller) and drivers make 80k plus yearly. Traveling line workers make the best money, but you will be gone a lot.
