Become a sociologist in 2021? The role of the sociologists is important because if all people were participating in society and focusing on their own lives, no one would know the reasons behind why people behave differently around different people and why society is changing either for the better or for the worse.
In this post, I will help you figure out if being a sociologist is right for you by answering the following questions:
What is the average salary of sociologists?
What is the job market like for sociologists? Would it be hard for you to get a job?
Would this occupation be compatible with your interests and personality?
What kind of education do you need to become a sociologist?
Some want to go with the flow of life while some want to understand why life is flowing in a certain way. Sociologists are the latter.
It is easy to confuse sociology with psychology because both look into the deeper aspects of human behavior, but they are different. Between the two, sociology is a much broader field because it involves external factors, like the people they live with and the beliefs that were imposed on them either by society or by other people.
Sociologists develop theories that aim to explain the issues and problems that occur in society, which could involve religion, ethnicity, and culture, among others.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, sociologists earned $90,590 in 2019, which was $26,040 less than economists and $1,820 more than psychologists. If you can live with that annual wage, being a sociologist should cause no worries to you.
The base salaries of sociologists haven't been constantly going upward, but it's still going upward regardless. In fact, in a span of twenty years, the annual base salary was able to increase by almost 50%, from $47,310 in 1999 to $90,590 in 2019. There was a $43,280 difference!
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 2,630 employed sociologists in 2019. This shows that the people who choose to be a sociologist take up a small portion of society. That said, finding a job must be effortless, right?
30 job postings for sociologists against 2,630 employed sociologists means 87 times as many employed as job postings. This means that even though there aren't a lot of sociologists, the number of job opportunities is small, so it's still difficult to get a job in this field.
Based on the data from the Occupational Information Network, 77% of the sociologists have a doctoral degree while 23% have a master's degree. While a bachelor's degree in sociology exists, you won't be able to be a sociologist with it. There's a need for you to take further studies first.
