Teaching horses not to graze when ridden by making our idea the horse`s - makes it possible to ride on loose reins without having the horse snatching for grass and going against the rein.
This training is part of an online course community. If you want to build a magic bond with your horse that enables you to lead and ride at liberty, without depending on treats we now offer 14-day FREE trial: www.ridelikeaviking.com/course

Excellent tip. I wish I had known this with my last horse. Never had relief from the tendency to graze while being ridden. I am training a new horse to ride now so I will use this right from the start.Many thanks for these videos

Thank you so much for the video! We care for a horse two times a week and have these problems while riding, mostly in wintertime when they almost get no gras while on the (muddy) meadow. A bush of gras at the side and she's head down into it. The problem is she's really large (Ex jumper) and no matter what i do (clap shoulder, TRY to bend her neck etc...), it just causes her to walk more into the bushes or she gets really upset. She would never give up on the gras... i usually get off her then and make her work, but as soon as i'm on top again there's no differrence.... We have no trouble on the ground at all, i even go for walks without holding her, just with a stick for communication, if necessary... ah, we ride in a ropehalfter only, works for everything except the grass... but even wiith bits you wouldn't pull on them... we do lots of groundwork, liberty etc, she's a great, gentle horse but oh the grass..... ;)))) if you have any other ideas i'd gladly appreciate it :)) Thank you so much!

Part of the Ride Like a Viking program is to teach horses to respond to light signals and feel. Then we use the signals to solve problems like your are having. Your leg aid and forward is the most important tool when teaching horses not to graze when ridden, not the bridle (bitless or with bit). We don`t have free training on this but we offer a 14-day FREE trail where you amo will learn how to teach the riding signals to your horse in a manner that will make your horse feather light and responsive to rein aid and leg aid. @@RideLikeaViking aha!! That makes sense! I would love to come spend time in your company with horses.....I am very much planning to take your course......the gardening is starting in Canada so I am concerned I won’t have the time to dedicate to the course......but at same time this is the time of year I spend much more time riding that I also need your course more! I am very isolated in rural Alberta and have no round pen, barn or riding arena.....so everything I do would be out in pasture .

Thank you! We are currently working on this issue with our two Mustangs! They do not have large pastures of grass where they spend their days-they've mostly eaten it down to very short nubs. The area that surrounds their barn area is quite lush grass and we take them out a couple times a day with their halters to allow them to eat the lovely grass. Do you think it's possible since it's such a limited resource for them that they can ever become "polite" on the grass and actually ignore it? We try to empathize with their plight because they don't get this grass at any other time but with us-we have a sand arena where we do most of our ground work and we take them on halter walks through the forest or down on the road where the grass is not a problem-do you think we're expecting too much from them to be able to "listen to us" on the grass and not eat it?
@RideLikeaViking
@RideLikeaViking Год назад
I don`t think expecting a horse not to snatch for grass when ridden or led is too much to expect. Providing a grazing cue will make things clearer for the horse as when it is ok to graze and when it is not.

@@RideLikeaViking OK! Thank you! we'll continue to work on it along with the cues to eat grass and for "head up" -we really appreciate your technique of wiggling the lead rope as an annoying thing so that they decide to put their heads up on their own it gave us an alternative to pulling their heads up which never felt right!

I think what you’re doing looks fantastic. One question I do have is. if the correction for everything seems to be work. Then will they associate riding as correction? Or am I just not far enough ahead in learning about this aspect of training to see the end result?
@RideLikeaViking
@RideLikeaViking Год назад
Telling a horse not to do something would be a correction, asking them to do something they can`t do without not doing the undesired behaviour is asking them to do something else. It will depend on our mindset which affects the way we ask and how the horse experiences this as punishment work or just a task. This particular horse was quite shut down and lazy, he became a lot more willing, positive and forward by given choices and not being micromanaged and prevented from grazing when ridden and lead, which will only make the grass more tempting.

Just fantastic! I am still having trouble to be comfortable leading on such a long lead rope. I can see it is an excellent way but when I am doing it, I am not used to its bd keep wondering if something spooks him a bit....he will run right into me?
@RideLikeaViking
@RideLikeaViking 3 года назад
Keep your horse on the outside of you, especially in the turns. If they are aware of us they will not run us down, being close to a distracted horse is more dangerous than being close to them 👍✨

@@RideLikeaViking ok! When I lead my horse on the 12 foot lead rope/tied rope halter he tends to wander a bit and not walk straight forward, but tends to walk directly behind me, so I get slight nervousness and bring him closer. But you are saying actually more da ferrous to be close?! Some times if I walk him down road....leading or riding....we come across a big herd of elk on neighbouring farm.....my horse, Sailor does not seem to like the elk and gets very high alert ....I am slowly trying to get him used to them. My farrier says I have to be strong and use a whip to scare him, but that is not my style. I very MUCH like your style.....really I am impressed how you keep it simple for the home rider yet safe and practical and effective! I am your fan. Many trainers good in Alberta but very complicated and too expensive for me.....

I think it is time to take your course. If I take the course (about $30 a month in Canada) can you let me know somehow when my 15 day trial is over? In 15 days I can definitely know if I want to continue. I very much appreciate all the information you have given for free. You are very generous. I love your ponies. I almost bought a rare Norwegian Fjord from a neighbour but mostly we have quarter horses out here.

Cool video. I like your handling with problems. Works with all horses.. well.. except for my own 😂 love him and he loves me back, I'm shure. But nothing in the world is more interesting than fresh Gras. Not even an Atomic bomp 🤣 My only chance is to hold him occupied and never look away.
@RideLikeaViking

You might have to do a bit more prework and be able to take the guard and offer connection as reward for not eating the grass, this also solves other issues such as separation anxiety. What horses offer each other in a herd is taking the guard and hanging out. If we can do that with our horse we become more interesting than other horses and/or grass ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-miBJHhE1JU4.html

Plus if timing of the release is off or if we ask something and then give up, this is not going to work only make the horse ignore our signals. Teach your horse the signals and groundwork you are going use to solve a problem before using the groundwork and signals to solve problems 👍✨

@@RideLikeaVikingwhat you say there is correct and it is completely not new to me. But I really do have the lead as long as I focus on my horse. And when I do not so, he is eating. 🤷‍♀️ And it is the same behavior he is having in his herd. Eating is the best thing in the world for him - that's his character. So I just stopped working on this "problem", continued to love him and give him my whole attention, when we work together.
