Becoming a better painter is something that occurs when you find a basic method or application and then put it to practice. The experience alone , will advance your skills each time you choose to do it.

Howdy Boomer! Man... I know I've said it before... but breaking these processes down like this really makes it manageable for those of us just learning. Before starting your videos I never would have thought this kind of detail was possible for someone like me. But now that I know the 'secret', instant confidence. It is like seeing a magic trick and learning how it is done and thinking 'that's it?' lol! Education, practice, patience, and not being afraid to experiment are the secrets to this kind of magic. Well done, and thanks for sharing 🤠

Good on you. You just summed up the whole process that can also be expanded upon right there. You have to dumb things down in order to teach the method. Once you experience and put it into practice, it becomes second nature as muscle memory takes over. Cheers ~ Boomer.

Morning mate, just out of curiosity, how long has the ferry taken in hours would you say? It's looks fantastic, almost completed and getting closer to a semi permanent fixture on the layout 👌
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama 23 часа назад
The Ferry build is @ 750 Hours so far over five months. Several more hours left to final. She will be finished before the end of next month. There will be a Final episode covering everything so far. This will be followed by a live stream @ The Second Section Podcast where I will answer questions and talk about the operations around it. There is an extendable cantilever cradle that the Ferry sits on so it comes on the layout for (unloading/loading). I can set up the Ferry in under ten seconds from the staging shelf it sits on under the layout. Soon . . . 😉

Great lesson. Will give it a try. I've been using your "shortcut" method from a while ago. Distress plastic with razor saw. Rattlecan tan, dry. Wipe with straight burnt umber oil - then come back and wipe off with rag - NO THINNER! Let dry overnight. Light washes of Vallejo dark wash. I did this on a flatbed truck bed with some V-groove Evergreen and man it was NICE! I owe it all to you.
@boomerdiorama

It's a simple method that works with any color as well. 😁

Dear Boomer, the way you showed the paint job on these doors is a beautiful example of how you put your skills into an educational setting. Love the way you filmed the simplicity of constructing the doors, as well as the different stages of the color ways. How the acrylic washes enforce the look, where it takes the viewer through the lens and the wet in wet method brings depth beyond the opaque characteristics of the acrylics. And last but not least how the oil paint filter, as I may call it such, brings out the natural look of those stained and/or lacquered wooden doors. Cheerio

You've broken a process down to their most basic parts. As much as I've used my acrylics using your techniques, I've ignored the oils in my box. They were somewhat intimidating at least till now. Now I think I see it. After I get done butchering Evergreen plastic on the current build I'll give this a go. Great video Brother!

The oils are a great way to render! I’ve been using OPR (Oil Paint Rendering) for years in my weathering, along with Acrylics Gouaches and lately, AK Weathering Pencils! I just love how they can work together if done properly!
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama День назад
Yes indeed. Oils go back quite aways with the old Military Modelers, like Sheperd Paine, Francois Verlinden, Lewis Pruneau and Bob Letterman. It's just that mainstream model railroading seems to be indoctrinated into one particular method due to older publications and the obligations of sponsored products in those particular magazines.

Yes. However, the wood grain may cause undesirable absorption rates. Plastic has the advantage of being a sealed surface by default. With wood you might have to seal it first. - Depends on what you want.

Thanks Boomer, I to like using acrylics. Thanks to the content creators like you, I was able to develop my painting and weathering techniques quickly from the very first model I painted and weathered and have never looked back. I enjoy using paint to create the illusion I want to portray. It's interesting to me that the same colors I use to portray wood is also the same colors that I can use to make someone think it's rusted metal and yet it's actually plastic. I've discovered that I tend to use a lot of burnt umber, burnt sienna, rust colors, gray, kaki, yellow ochre, and black. I find that a lot of scenic elements on a layout like wood, steel, stone, brick, concrete, asphalt, and earth can be painted using just those basic colors using different layering techniques and varing the colors applied to make it look like the surface you think you see. Building and painting scenic items is one of the more enjoyable aspects of this hobby for me. It's like therapy for me and I can get lost in it. I think you call it the ZONE. Yeah, I've been there. It's a wonderful place to be in these crazy times. It's like a little slice of Heaven without a care in the world just enjoying God's creation. One truly can discover in nature that perfection of a scene is only achieved by It's imperfections. Otherwise known to modelers as weathering techniques.

I like what you wrote. You summed up the art of weathering so eloquently. When you get used to it it feels easy. When you try to teach it, it seems difficult to explain. You are right that you can achieve remarkable results with all the same basic colors when applied creatively. Furthermore, It is an awesome experience to take a piece of plastic and transform it into what you desire as well. Thank you for taking the time to write your thoughts and experiences.
