When I went to school in 2004 ( before gel polish) they gave us a kit with odor free acrylic kit, hard gel kit with lamp along with an airbrush. When we did pedicures it was metal chair for the client, bucket and we sat in the floor. We were only allowed to use odor free acrylic. It was horrible. My teacher was a barber and thank God my cousin taught me when I was 15. She got tired of doing my nails so she taught me. The only thing good about my school was I was completely prepare with boards. I passed with 100% on my practical and 97% on my written.

I just love your interviews! You are absolutely right! Most schools are only interested in taking your money, and barely preparing you for the State. I went to a State School, and let me tell you the teachers were the Bomb. They were both retired professionals, OG's of the Beauty World. I ended up with a Cosmetology License, but we did a full term of nails. Girl..from the basic to airbrushing. The "Nail" teacher would have us in her "NailTech" class and we would All work on each other. We had "Clients" once a week, and we did it all. I had friends that went to one of the "Nail" schools, and honestly they knew nothing. We had all kinds of Beauty Sales Reps come in and show us their wares, we worked with the products, and then some. Girl, I did so much Tammy Taylor that I was going to call myself Tammy Nails..( lol 😆)... But honestly, the experience is either enhanced by the teachers, or minimized... I was lucky... With that all said...Thank You for all of your videos! You do a service to Our "Beauty" community. Be Proud of what you do!!!!! Thank you, again!...And keep it going..YOU GO GIRL!

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THAT 50/50 at LEAST!!! Wow I can’t believe they did that to you guys like that!!! Ugh…I am looking into schools right now and hoping to start in the fall…sadly I feel like RU-vid has helped me a lot BUT not enough and I really need school, plus I want to be licensed…excited for these videos!!! ❤️

I feel so blessed with my school. Don’t get me wrong, we still don’t learn how to actually do nails but I’m on my 4th week and they have been telling us what we need to study and the practicals for state board. That’s all that’s engrained in us.

I have lumbar neuropathy and I haven’t let that stop me from working! I have scoliosis with a pinched nerve. My doctor wanted to fuse my entire spine, but my husband was totally against that cuz I could end up being worse so we chose pain management and I haven’t let that stop me from working! Now I’m getting ready to start cosmetology school only because there isn’t a nail tech program around where I live. I have always loved doing hair, makeup and nails 🥰🥰 so I’m not letting my age or anything stop me now!!!

Yes, Meridith! I’m so glad u didn’t go with the fusion. We have to keep pushing! I know a lot of people who accept it as defeat & it doesn’t have to be. Also, having a good support system is a blessing.

Our kit was good I think!! We did get to refill our cnd monomer and other supplies from school inventory!! Our teacher was great she really went above even though we was online for the 3 weeks she was sick!!

We got to keep our tips. But clients paid our teacher. She did supply acrylic and monomer then our kit we had bought when we started. Any extra stuff we used like stones sheb charged a dollar a nail and she kept it. I also learned most stuff from RU-vid! Mainly you girl! 😁Hey girl hey! 😊

I passed my written test first time. My practical 🤦‍♀️it was given just like hers. I bombed so bad!. My teacher never showed us the steps for the state board. She called us back a week before we go and she tried to make us practice then like cram it in in a few days. So I had to schedule and pay a second time. I go July 12 so yall with me luck. I almost had a panic attack in there. It was an awful mess!

The school supplied the basics. Crappy 5 yr old gel polish. They expected us to do nail art but did not supply nail art brushes. Towards the end I was using my product and supplies. Which they didn’t like because they couldn’t guarantee it. We got to keep the tips but most people didn’t tip or tip a small amount.

I was self taught via RU-vid. I was going to go to school because I wanted to be z traveling tech/independent.. but I'm getting older and I don't want to work in a clinic. I know a lot of nail techs or I'm not sure what you'll call them because they aren't licensed but cold blooded with the nails..after hearing this. .I'm not going to waste my time and add more dept. Plus I want to mainly make press ons.

I finished my program in January and finished my tests and became licensed end of February. When it came to product, the school had some old crap polishes and that was about it. Our kits barely came with what we needed so had to provide our own better quality products. When we did services the entire service cost went to the school regardless of whose product we used but if the client tipped we did get to keep that.

As beauty therapist in the Caribbean, just graduated I can attest they really don't teach much about nails in school instead the focus was sanitation, sterilisation and customer service 🤷‍♀️and no job experience which should have been mandatory...

I agree Nikki y they talking ALL the money if u using ur supplies (80- 20 split).... , even if u used theirs its still ur time n work so atleast 60- 40 should be the split then

I see nothing has changed in nail school 🙄 , I graduated in 89 and we had no You Tube ! “Baby boards” is a mock test that my nail school had you take in order to graduate and if you didn’t practice your ass off plus study FR you were S.O.L ! State Board was exactly like baby boards so at least the school did that . We did not make any money either , just tips and little old ladies were the clientele so a 1.00 was the average tip and to them , you had to do all kind of extras to deserve that $ 1.00 tip 🙄😂

😂😂 I'm laughing because one day they gave me the most difficult client. I think they wanted to see how I would handle her. I kept her talking the entire time & she gave me a 3 dollar tip.
