Started my software engineer job at 37 after 12+ years beeing a process engineer in the automitive industry. It took me 1 year and 4 months to teach myself programming with 0 money invested, only free resources. Consistency is key.

where did u learn it
@rolibv
@rolibv 2 месяца назад
@@Josemartinez-es6vj courses: for python: cs50p, cs50x, freecodecamp scientific computing woth python, python bookcamp book. I would sugest learning also C from the C primer plus book. After learning at least one language try to solve problems on a platform: I found codewars more friendly for beginners. You probably know that you also must try to make projects... All sort of projects, if you can make something of use even better. So you don t need any money, you need only your will and a computer.

I made my first git commit in November 2019, at 38 years old! I immersed myself in everything computer science. I started with the Chef automation tool, Python basics, and the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification. I was clueless and didn’t know how everything fit together-I was shooting in the dark. In 2020, I learned a few web frameworks, explored data science a bit, and also earned my AWS Solutions Architect certification. I decided to pursue my master’s in CS from 2021 to 2022 (learned a lot, distributed systems, android dev., machine learning, etc.). I began grinding LeetCode in January 2023 for about six months and then started applying for jobs. After about 200 applications, numerous coding assessments, and a handful of interviews, I received my offer in February 2024. Just thought I’d share and offer a realistic timeline.

Hi Andrew this was a really great video. I am currently 24, graduated at 22 (with a CS degree) but also ended up in a sales role then travelled for a year and now going to Australia for a year as i enjoyed my first leg of travelling so much. It was really cool how our experiences are kind of mirrored. My dream is to still end up in Tech as that's what I went to uni for but was starting to get worried that I was falling behind, shouldn't keep travelling etc. etc. This was a really comforting video for me! :)
@andrewcodesmith
@andrewcodesmith 8 дней назад
@@Thearkillian personally I wouldn’t worry about falling behind. I’d prioritise life experiences, as you’ll be in your 20’s and travelling once. When I wanted to focus on my career I really locked in for a few years. But that time travelling, learning what I wanted, and doing cool things in the world was transformational. That will give you a sense of fulfilment and accomplishment and general sense of a life lived well, that is priceless. But obviously career is important too so it’s a balance, and try to save a little if you can.

To find work as a software engineer without a computer science degree in 2024 is next to impossible. I have an undergrad in CS (4.0), experience, and I'm working on a master's degree in CS, and I still can rarely get an interview in software engineering/data science/ML. This is a nice video, but please understand that the industry is changing and despite Andrew's confidence in being able to do this all over again, I would bet lots of money that he would be stuck in this job market like everyone else. If you're serious about software engineering, get a CS degree, and finding a job may be the hardest thing you ever do.
