I am not a professionally trained chef, but I run a line. I went to engineering school and decided that cooking was more fun. from my view, you can just get all of the cooking knowledge on the internet for free. and you can get paid for all the hands on experience you get because you just work in the kitchen. I'm conflicted on the idea of culinary school. Seems like a head start but the road was already open.

That's super awesome! You must be damn proud and even a good cook I can tell. But tell us one thing that is it worth or what major difference will it make if we pass out from such culinary institutes? Cause they cost damn hefty

@@prathmeshchandwale1506 I think the skills he learned went way beyond cooking. He learned how cuisine is seen in other countries and was offered the opportunity to travel globally to experience that. He trained under internationally known chefs that came from the very countries of the good he was being asked to prepare. He began to understand what it meant to cook with a French flair or how to shop in European Market places or Asian markets. It went so far beyond learning to cook. He learned about serving and the entire restaurant industry. He took advanced math classes to learn how to convert recipes and to and from metric. He also upon graduation had a job waiting because the CIA is so well represented in the Culinary field that alumni hire alumni and they know the education their new chefs received. Youre not hiring an unknown. Youre hiring a very qualified and some even experienced chefs, many of which become restaurant owners themselves. Some of the best restaurants are chef owned.

yurushite I just got accepted for fall of 2021 and you’ll receive a lot of financial aid , scholarships and grants don’t let the money detour you from applying , APPLY and you could Always take out loans , chase your dreams

@@prathmeshchandwale1506 It depends on your major, what kind of restaurant you want to go to, and where you are in the world. I go to the CIA, and am going into fine dining, and to be quite honest, I'm not sure how much I'm going to make after I graduate, however, you will have job security.

So many of you have 0 idea how much money chefs make. Hotels or cruise ships always hire straight out of school and pay 100k+. Even busy restaurants an executive chef makes 80+

It's all beautiful at school all glamor at school and it's a great accomplishment once you graduate you know I did not go to the CIA I'm a le cordon bleu graduate I worked in industry for 24 years and became an executive chef after 24 years in the field I hanged up my knives it is not worth the investment and time and the money you put into this career you will not get rich in this career you will be in debt in this career especially if you go to culinary school like CIA or Le Cordon Bleu and many others remember it is not the school that makes the chef it is the gift that makes the chef that being said if you decide to go to culinary school make sure without a shadow of a doubt this is what you want to do because it is a rough road and a tough life and only a few make it.

I wanted to go here more than anything, but it was just way too much money. I had no hope of doing this without debt I could never hope to pay off.

CIA is in financial difficulties, which I'm not sure they can get out of. Bankruptcy most likely. Very high priced Associate's degree with almost no transferable credits. If you want to be a chef, go work in a restaurant. Cheaper, on-the-job training, same lousy working conditions and low pay. But no massive student loans!

@@dtv1966 Uh, regardless of if you got to a culinary school you should get a job first. I am currently at the cia, and have seen which students do best. Ultimately, the people who haven't worked in the food industry before dropout usually, then it's the fast food kids, then its the fine dining kids. Most of the people who do really well, worked in pubs and such before coming to the culinary. But Jeff ain't wrong about the cia's finances, but the cia does hold a good amount of weight on a resume, so you don't have to worry bout getting a job after graduation.

Jupe367 Depends. For a associates degree less than two years. For a bachelor's degree it's 4 years. There's more information at The Culinary Institue of America website.

Yeah, I met a guest chef at work who attended the CIA decades ago. I asked him that question and he said it was only 2 years when he did but now (as Emily said) it's 4 years. I asked him what they added. He said that back then, they only taught the cooking aspect. Now they also teach how to run a restaurant (I think this video didn't mention that). Things like P&L (Profits and Loss margins), etc.

At least graduating from Med school pays well (I assume). I told that guy I met who graduated from the CIA that Anthony Bourdain said that when you graduate from culinary school, you're likely going to be stuck on minimum wage for years. But the chef I met said it's actually easy to move up because there's so many openings.

Stupid move when they changed the name of the Escoffier restaurant to Bocuse. Escoffier did way more for the advancement of culinary procedures and skills which is what this school is suppose to be doing.

This is the same bs crap that Le Cordon Bleu got in trouble for and are no longer around. You dont become or get trained as a "Chef" in culinary schools. Its not like any other field in that sense. 2yrs In a culinary school only prepares you for the real world and provides foundation. You certainly are not any kinda Chef when you graduate. It obviously takes years of experience in the real world to become any kinda Chef. No matter how you graduate. If you meet a Chef that doesnt have years under thier belt after school, then they got thier position in a way that has nothing to do with skills or exp. Not even Ramsey graduated as a Chef. He worked under other Chefs, in which one of them even made him cry before he made it to a Chef position. Also these schools dont tell you that when you get out you will not be earning a "Chefs" salary which is awful considering your gonna hafta start paying off your student loans soon after graduating. In all honest opinion, you will learn more and quicker spending one week in a restaurant kitchen vs a culinary classroom for a month. I will hire an employee with 3 months exp in any kitchen vs a school graduate any day.
