It's really sad when you think about it. She didn't marry Tom. She never married. She died at 41. And yet her novels are all about love and happy endings, the heroine winning the heart of the rich hero. But she had a short life and her sister Cassandra never married. Just sad. Real life compared to books seems lacking.

Fantasy 87 yes! Jane was known for having a sharp wit, which actually drove away men of that time. She wrote Pride and Prejudice in the same year that she met and was forced to part with Tom and she wanted a heroine in similar circumstances to herself to succeed in love like she unfortunately never did.

@JT-hs9or
@JT-hs9or 7 лет назад
Tabby Roberts No, he was not rich. Tom Lefroy came from a poor family and he had 9 siblings and parents that totally depend on him, financially. He was taken care by his uncle who was a judge, that gave him money. He sent his uncle's money to his family, secretly, to support their life back there in Ireland. In this movie it's described that when Jane found out about this fact, she thought that if they got married, their circumstances will destroy their love slowly, because Jane was also poor and had to depend on him too. She thought that they could never make it. So she decided that they can't be together. It's beautiful, realistic and tragic in one package.
@JT-hs9or
@JT-hs9or 7 лет назад
But yes, in this movie it seems like he was actually rich by inheritance. In one part of this movie, his uncle told him that his mother (his uncle's sister) was actually born rich. But later in her life she decided to marry a poor guy, and then become poor too.

Yes I had the same thought once. When you get your heart broken, time will heal and erase everything and you will find someone else and fall in love again. But as I grew older, I've read and heard so many stories similar to this. That sometimes you can't completely erase someone, even when you are married and have some kids. Human's heart is mysterious.

Maybe there's where 'Persuasion' comes in (since it's written later in her life) . Like Anne, Austen probably long for the lost opportunity to marry him. Perhaps it's a wishful thinking poured out on her books (in Anne's case, a second chance came + the Wentworth returned richer). Probably what she hoped to happen in her own love life. no, I don't really know. I probably make no sense

Tom Lefroy: What value would there be in life, if we are not together? Beautiful and tragic movie. Somehow wants to time travel and see what really happened to them lol crazy 😂

Veronica Spatola this was me when I found out it ages ago so I don't know why the trailer was suggested for me. I think because I was trying to find a scene from persuasion.

What a nice film, splendidly done. After watching this I can clearly see Tom Lafroy in ever character of Jane. Mostly, in John Willoughby. Also sense and sensibility is pretty much based on her experience.

I always thought that jane austen and Tom Lefroy’s relationship was largely the inspiration for persuasion I always imagine when I’m watching becoming jane that it was anne and wentworth’s relationship before they were separated

it might be unclear whether Mr. Lefroy loved Jane so deeply or was only a puppy love, but for that small time they were tgt i can say that Jane indeed loved him deeply. I remember in Pride and Prejudice, 'Only a deep love can make the protagonist marry or else she' d be an old maid'. Jane died an old maid, i guess she can't find herself another deep love other than Lefroy.

This is a wonderfully made movie. I would hope the same cast can continue to make adapted movies of other Jane Austen novels. I am a bit in doubt of the historic truth of the plot itself though. From " Pride and Prejudice" we got to know what Austen's perception ( and society's of course) to Lydia's eloping. How could she have ever thought of doing it herself? Jane was quite modernized in this story. I wouldn't deny that she had experience deep and inspiring love. But 18th century love was, and should be different from one of the 20th century.
