In this video I head out wild camping in the UK (Peak District) with some old school backpacking gear. I picked up a sleep system for only £25 and couldn't wait to try it out. For me anyway. It was nice to get back to a more minimalist camping style that was much more simplistic, although it definitely wasn't ultralight camping gear.
I have an MSR Tindheim 2 Tent plus a Gopro Hero 11 & Insta360 action camera bundle up for grabs over on www.messner.co... Good luck to everyone who enters the competition 🤞🏻

I genuinely believe England is the most beautiful country in regards to the diversity you see, the lush greenery and colourful flowers. For as shit as the rest of it is the actual island is beautiful. Everybody moans about rain but I love it because it brings my eyes the beautiful nature I get to see every day. Good video Paul.

Finallly a military surplus episode ! :) Maybe can be easier if the bedroll transformed in a way to be ported on the back with some (even basic) shoulder straps

Aaah! The souvenirs…😊 I was a boy-scout in the sixties. We used old military waxed tents that leaked like crazy. Now I use a small ultralight poncho tarp. I know it’s old fashioned but I also use modern stuff as a bath tub that I made of Tyvek material and one aluminium trekking pole. Plus a small quilt made before the ultralight fashion. My old rubber inflatable mattress gave out so I bought a Nemo ultralight new one. My rucksack gave up and I bought one of those 21 liter running backpacks. Total weight 13 pounds without water and food…

I'm surprised just how much i can carry in a Polish bread bag. Small tarp, sit mat, half groundsheet, lightweight rain jacket and overtrousers, small trangia mess tin with my lunch, torch, monocular, titanium cup with coffee and meths stove, windshield, knife fork and spoon and 800ml water. Much better than a rucksack in summer as i dont get a sweaty back. Mine cost five pounds but i had to get a shoulder strap for it.

Hi Paul, nice demo. I had a canvas bedroll in the army and it was amazing in all weathers. I wasn't worried about the weight as I had an A vehicle to carry it on. Keep up the good work, you always seem to find an interesting slant to camping.

Likewise, I was at college of FE in about 1982, most of us had the old 38 pattern canvas backpacks with brass trim on the straps, my mates were copies, but mine was an original, also had a couple of haversack ones as well, gutted I don’t still have them now, the last one I sold on eBay about 10 years ago,☹️ just before I got back into camping or wild camping as it’s called now.

This is so interesting, my dad shared a video before me 150 mile fell walk of your 8kg setup, because I have the same (+700g in luxuries if applicable, or packing for versitility). When I was there I only had 2 miles to walk and a bus on occasion so I made a swag of my bivvy, bag and mat :o I've never seen others use these on RU-vid, they are very convenient. I love how yours is, it must feel great being in there

I'm glad you are there to show me why I don't want to go bedroll camping! Far too much faff and despite the forecast you can never guarantee the UK weather won't change. A Lanshan 1 without the inner would be my choice along with my usual summer pad and bag. It may be double the cost but it's less weight and bulk and far more comfortable. PS. My dad used to have a little haversack like that for his lunchtime sandwiches and flask! PPS Have you tried the Cnoc water bags? I saw Paul Hayes with one and got it; it's been a gamechanger for my water gathering/storage.

Watching you have comfortable nights camping with top end kit that lots of people can’t afford or justify buying isn’t exactly riveting stuff. Watching you suffer is much more entertaining 😂 Perhaps you could camp with stuff you’ve bought entirely from charity shops or homemade stuff (like the mosi net) Anyway, I really enjoyed this….top stuff Jimmi

I've just come back from a 5 night walk along Offa's Dyke with a tarp. My question is this - why with such excellent ventilation did I get massive amounts of condensation on the underside on all the nights? Way worse than a tent? It kept off rain even when it was pretty windy, but touch the tarp and then it started raining indoors!

Insects in yer'ears Paul, really?! In England? A that elevation? In that breeze? Ee lad, you were lucky, no midges... Summer backpacking in the Highlands is barely plausible from June to September inclusive, except with great preparedness (mozzy coils once inside, inner tent must be totally midge-secure, much use of Smidge most of the time). I can hardly wait for the end of September each year, when the females stop biting. With luck I'll get a few autumn camps in before winter proper comes. Mid-winter camps are fine if the weather isn't too sh-t. But I'll almost sacrifice all-year-round backpacking for the mid-March to end-May window in the far NW Highlands, Assynt, Sutherland, remote beaches, seeing nobody for days. No midges, and fairly reliable sun for at least 50% of the time. This year we had fab weather from March to early June, pre-midge eruption! So please, bugs in your ears, really Paul, time to man up matey! (Joshing, keep up the good work, we all love ya!)
