That looks really great, John! I'm beginning to really like the look of contrasting solid wood / white finishes. I built a free-standing kitchen cabinet a few years ago with a similar look - finished with a white base, solid Walnut top and black hardware and it came out awesome. It'd be great to build everything out of beautiful solid wood but it's just cost prohibitive for many people. Can't wait to see the rest of the pieces in the series! Did you do anything to finish off the bottom of the headboard like edge banding or just paint over the exposed sandwich of plywood and MDF? Certainly not necessary for the footboard since it's so low but depending on mattress height, I could see how the bottom of the HB could be exposed while lying in bed.
@JohnBuildsIt
@JohnBuildsIt 3 года назад
No I didn’t do anything to cover it. With the box spring, the mattress comes a few inches up on the panel so it can’t be seen 👍🏽 thanks for watching!

I could just add that 1/8th to the side bed rail ? I’m thinking it may throw it off since I’m 1/8th under . I may just have to make new legs cause it may affect everything else
@TheFiown

I have all the wood to build my bed ( prices have doubled in a year! ) but my question is how deep to set the mattress into the frame so the sleeper doesn't end up sitting on the wood as the mattress sinks under the weight of sitting on the edge ? Half way down ? I don't want the mattress to sit on top of the frame as it will slide off. I like how you have planned to set yours in, looks about half way ? Thanks
@JohnBuildsIt
@JohnBuildsIt 2 года назад
In this case they were using a box spring as well, so the support cleats are sunk all the way to the bottom. Really just depends on how thick and firm your mattress is! Halfway should be a safe bet though
@TheFiown
@TheFiown 2 года назад
@@JohnBuildsIt Thank you. I actually bought a good orthopedic metal frame with adjustable spring wood slats as the base and for the moment a sping coil mattress as it's for a guest room and after buying the wood and the foam for the headboard I couldn't invest in a good Bultex mattress. The bed head and frame will be padded on top of various foam thicknesses. Although I live in a large old house in France the bedrooms are not wide enough for queen size beds. Given the price of lumber these days it's best to forget Bitcoin and stock wood ! Best Wishes

John I'm in the process of building two twin size for my kids like I mentioned earlier. Any advice on the width would be appreciated. I didn't know there were two sizes for twin mattresses. Some are 38" wide and some are 39". I'm shooting for 38.5" hopefully it works. I already got the head boards and foot boards done. Just need to cut the rails, attach the hardware and paint. Some changes I made are 1) I'm using oak for the caps, 2) I used 2x6 for the rails and raised them so there's no need for a boxspring. I also chamfered the side rails with a 45 for safety. I'm planning to make a sliding drawer that sits on wheels and rolls in a out. I'll post the photos on a message board and link them once I'm done.

I appreciate that! I actually think you’re the first person that has asked for metric haha! But maybe I would get more sales if I offered both. I’ll try to in the future

Awesome build man! Love your videos! One question- why not run a stretcher from front to back to support the slats in the middle instead of adding the 2x2's? My only thought was those might get in the way if you wanted to store anything underneath.

Hmm I’ve never seen one like that haha but I’m liking the sound of it! 👍🏽

I'm seeing an upscale cottage vibe--versatile design--that I prefer. You've inspired a plan for a pair of square planter boxes in this style (maybe, a bit under the height of your footboard). Recent garden preps got me behind on my vids views 😕.

Very nice build. I think this has given me all the ideas I need for a slightly smaller than queen sized bed. Thank you. Also, many thanks for using bed rail clamps instead of pocket screwing everything 😂

Bed looks great!! Just got the plans. Why did you chose to use plywood and mdf for the head and foot boards instead of just mdf?
@JohnBuildsIt
@JohnBuildsIt Год назад
Just more rigid in my opinion. Could definitely go all mdf though 👍🏽

Look awesome can’t wait to get Your plans and start make one myself. Do you have a link for the clamps for the taper jig? Also any issues with the frame hardware with any creeks and noises with the boxspring and mattress on?
@JohnBuildsIt
@JohnBuildsIt 3 года назад
Clamps are linked in the description 👍🏽 and no this is the most solid and quiet bed I’ve ever been around haha. I’m sure it depends and could make some noise depending on how good the hardware is installed, but not gonna lie, I nailed the fitment and they’re perfectly tight haha

I just found your channel and love your bedroom set. I showed to my wife and she loved it as well. The only thing we are trying to decide is if we are going to stick with the grey or go with black walnut tops. Great work!!!
