Dr Sumi Dunne is a GP in Portarlington, Co. Laois.
She was born in London and completed her undergraduate training at the University of Southampton. She then worked in neonatal intensive care and emergency department paediatrics before moving to Ireland to complete her General Practice training with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
She moved to Laois in 1999 and has worked in general practice in the region since then. She is a longstanding Clinical Lecturer in the Department of General Practice, RCSI, teaching communication skills and providing pastoral support and mentorship to RCSI students.
In 2016, she completed a Masters in Leadership for Health Professions Education at the RCSI.
In 2018 she joined the Operation Transformation programme on RTE as the resident health expert, replacing Dr Ciara Kelly. The show has a very large audience and promotes healthy lifestyles and general wellbeing for its participants and viewers.
She has been a strong advocate for reproductive healthcare rights in Ireland and is a member of the START group which educates and supports abortion providers.
She was a candidate in the Medical Council elections in 2018. She is also a leading member of the Irish Medical Organisation GP Committee.
