Mary Fulbrook visits Bedzin, a small town just 25 miles from Auschwitz through which some 85,000 Jews passed on their way to slave labour or the gas chambers. She talks to 'bystanders' describing what they witnessed and members of the 'second generation', detailing the accounts of their parents. oxford.ly/1brrs2W

Rutka Laskier - a young girl wrote a diary of her short life in Bedzin that was only discovered recently. She is another Anne Frank and i hope you all read her diary which is published in many different languages. Unfortunately she died in a concentration camp and did not make it through to the end of WWII.

No mention of the Roman Catholic Parish Priest Fr. Wincenty Mieczysław Zawadzki of Będzin’s Holy Trinity Parish and his heroic intervention to help the local Jewish people. He wrote in his memoirs of that dreadful event; ‘The Jews, driven from their homes, beaten and murdered, began to flee towards the church, they occupied the entire street from the vicarage to the gate of the presbytery, lamenting and calling for help. I did not think for a moment, I ran to them, calmed them down, and then I opened the gates myself and led them calmly to the Castle Hill, where they were no longer in danger.’ God be good to him.

Thank you for this important and significant work of research and documentation on this video. This video should be required viewing for all high school students in the U.S. in their history classes. The dangers of nationalism and propaganda and racism are so evident from the powerful testimony of the eye-witnesses.....lessons we still need to be learning about and teaching our children today.

I live in Będzin. That castle you can see in the picture in 1:07 (on the left side) is still there. I see it every day without realizing what atrocity happened in here.

a work of such great importance... interviewing & recording the voices and related anecdotes of people who actually lived thru those times and locations is of such importance because the coming generations can learn a lot from these .

A horrific and compelling piece of historical reportage. Very well done and presented. Words fail me always when learning yet more of the unbelievable cruelty of the Germans ( and their cohorts ) in Nazi times. They took their cue from those at the very top and what a bunch of self-serving low life’s they turned out to be.

Thank you for this video. So much of history is stained with evil. The sorrow continues today. Oppression and degrading of life lays the ground work for this to happen again. We have learned nothing from the past.

Thank you for this compelling video. Perhaps - hopefully - it shows us that if the ‘little people’ stand up and say ‘no’ , we won’t do that, then it wouldn’t work would it. The power of people must not be underestimated. We must all stand up and be counted upon. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

Sam Pivnik was born in Bedzin, and as a youth, together with his family was sent to Auschwitz. Miraculously he survived and after the war settled in England. He wrote about his experiences in a book, "Survivor." It is a compelling and tragic read.

Thank you so much for this work, I and others will continue to study but your conclusion is oh so right. Again and again I come across the same thing. Of course I knew what was going on. but I had nothing to do with it I just made sure I did my job. I wish you all the luck in world in your continued work

We learn history because "History repeats", so that we can learn from its mistakes and try to avoid them. In solemn memory of thousands of innocent people who were murdered- Lest we forget.
