Bee Man & Crazy Tree Guys VS Bee Tree

I removed a honey bee colony from a really messed up water oak with the help of "Yeah Trees!" Wacky group of guys but very professional tree cutters!
Not sure if this tree would have survived another one of the many summer storms we get, it really needed to come down.
The first day I stayed on to lend a hand & keep the bees from stinging the crew.
We lowered the limb the bees were in to the ground & I went back the following day to perform the removal.
In case you're wondering, in Louisiana and many other states honey bees can only be kept in set ups with removable frames so this is why I remove bees from all sorts of things such as trees, boats, hot tubs, car engines, water meters, etc... you get the message, & transfer these colonies into man made bee hives with removable frames.
Hope you enjoyed the video, thank you for stopping by. If you enjoy content like this, please consider subscribing to my channel to see other videos from my library of videos & future videos I upload.

This brings back old memories with Mis Liz the bee lady in Baton Rouge. My first cut out was from a tree like this. It fell during a storm an the line man would not fix the line till the bees were gone. Mis Liz came out but needed help so I jumped in. She told me that the way I handled myself I needed to start bee keeping. So I did 20 years later I’m a small time bee keeper. RIP MIS LIZ.

Yeah, I’ve been dealing with this odd phenomenon for at least six years now, the last 2-3 years it’s gotten a little worse. One doctor said it could even be something rare that required literally brain surgery, something about an area between the brain & inner ear or something, some little “nip tuck,” surgery but to diagnose it required a cat scan. I was like but it only happens, only ever, when I’m in the heat but goes away after I’ve been in the AC for a little while. Yeah, I decided to pass on the cat scan & potential brain surgery for now. 🥴

I was wondering. When you cut into those bee trees and accidentally kill the queen. What is the plan after that?
@JPthebeeman
@JPthebeeman Год назад
Firstly, I cannot recall killing a single queen bee while performing a tree removal but if for some reason she didn’t survive the removal process there are several options one can take to insure the colony moves forward. 1) Allow the colony to make a new queen from worker eggs the queen had laid before something happened to her. In order for them to make a new, viable queen, larvae shouldn’t be more than 3 days old to begin with or you wind up with a drone laying queen. 2) You can give them “queen cells,” from another colony to make a new queen. The only downfall there is that you lose the genetics of the colony as half the DNA of a colony comes from the queen & half from the drones she mates with. Nature tries to dictate against inbreeding so she usually doesn’t mate with drones from her own colony or colony she is hatched from. 3) You can give them a mated queen that has been purchased from a queen bee supplier. 4) You could always combine the colony with another colony that is “queen right.”

I know a guy that I respected very much who kept bees. I recall years ago a statement he made that always made sense to me, “keep your bees as feral as possible,” he would say. This statement actually has a good bit of merit to it. New beekeepers should go in more often at first, to understand & learn what’s going on but leaving them alone to make their own decisions is sometimes the best medicine. I mean bees know best, right?

JP the symptoms you describe sound like what happens right before a person faints. Your body could be reacting to the heat and causing a "fight or flight" reaction; warning you in a way that you are getting too warm. Sometimes there's no one answer to why our body does things. But as long as you know it's a warning sign of some sort don't ignore it. Sensitivity to overheating happens to many people. Love the longer video today I can't get over how you spotted the queen but you had a feeling didn't you?! Take care! At least you aren't in California getting attacked by aggressive bees like the poor man in Los Angeles, even the bees out here are gangster!
@JPthebeeman
@JPthebeeman Год назад
I definitely am very sensitive to the warnings this odd thing I get poses. When it comes on I try to get out of the heat into my truck in the AC until it passes but I have had some bouts where it lasted more than an hour, almost two. Someone recently, mentioned try lying down when it happens, going to try next next time. I’ve been making sure to take electrolytes before I’m in the heat, the day before & day of, so I’m doing that but still this thing is somewhat of a mystery. I know it only happens while out in the heat, just haven’t been able to pinpoint the “why.” Thanks for mentioning you like the longer videos, not everyone does, this one was definitely for people like you who are fans of longer videos, thanks for your feedback it’s much appreciated!

Being a big guy, your core temp will be hard to bring down when it is high and the humidity and no breeze doesn't help. Some ways to cool down outside could be to put a beach tent over the cut out area so you aren't copping a beating from the sun, 18v fan pointed at you (uses the drill battery), if you have an air compressor in the truck maybe shoot air in your shirt, CamelBak with ice in it (and drink from it so you pee clear.

I use an ear washer that I found on Amazon and it's just like what the doctor uses, it's about 15 bucks and all you do is put a little peroxide and hot water in it and squeeze the trigger, just like a spray bottle, it works for about 2 weeks and you have to do it again. I'm curious what would be the monetary value of a hive of bees? You are gaining a hive of bees, comb, honey etc. What is it worth, say over a years time?❤❤❤❤
@JPthebeeman
@JPthebeeman Год назад
That would depend I suppose on where you’re located. Geographical locations with mild winters have tons of bees & it’s much easier catching a swarm in a bait hive or shaking an actual swarm into a hive box & splitting existing beehives than acquiring bees from opening walls, trees, etc… In essence, a beehive living in someone’s wall or tree in an area that has lots of bees to begin with is really not worth all that much in the scheme of things. If a beekeeper wants more bees we just split existing hives & in no time you’ve doubled or tripled your hives for free.

JP an exceptional video with the bee extraction. They were gentle because of your care and passion. I am amazed at how you find the queen. With your health issue, have you had your potassium level checked it maybe low? So nice to see you again. Take care.👏👍😀

First new video I've seen in a while , what BEES quit swarming, or getting in house's much anymore...lol 😂 I like watching U handle BEES with no suit , wish I could , allergic u know .. BUT I STILL OWEN 4 HIVES MYSELF , WEIRD HUH , OR PLAIN STUPID ( as I've been told ) lol😂.!!!! Little story , in my early 20's , 60's now i was standing by a tractor working on it , and in 2 minutes I have a swarm of maybe 4 lbs of BEES hanging on my beard , too my belt line . Stood , then set there 6 hours with BEES on me , an never got stung . Made them mad a few times tho going from standing to sitting... Never getting stung tho which i thought was amazing BUT GOOD I ONLY HAD 1 EPI-PEN , dont think one pen would have helped any with multiple stings !!!!! Talk about sweating bullets... I learned by your shows on just how many BEES I had for my BEE BEARD was 140,000 bee's or more ... OH YEAH , HAD 6 witnesses saw me with the bees , and hit the gas and left me there because of another swarm bigger came in and covered steering wheel of tractor too floor ... That swarm had probably 8 lbs or more in it . After 6 hours at 6.00 THEY JUST LEFT THANK GOD .....BUT INEVER GOT STUNG !!! Now I know from watching your videos bees aren't mean when swarming , back then my hold life earlier with bees mato was just STAY AWAY FROM BEES , PERIOD ...LOL 😂 Just keep on making more videos !!!!!!

There is an easier way to put comb into frames, but it might take slightly longer rubber bands. Hook a rubber band around one corner and pull the other end around the diagonally opposite corner. Do the same again with another band and the other two corners, making sure both rubber bands are on one side of the frame. That will give you something to lay the comb on instead of manipulating it while drawing rubber bands over the frame. Finish it by putting another two bands diagonally over it and it will be stable enough to put more bands around the frame if necessary.

I’ve been contemplating lately of going to longer rubber bands, it’s coming. Thanks for the suggestions, appreciate it!

You are correct on the ant species, Crematogaster sp. Other known as acrobat ants or Valentine ants. Completely harmless and normally cant bite humans.
@JPthebeeman
@JPthebeeman Год назад
These were indeed biting me, just didn’t sting though, definitely not like any fire ant variety that’s for sure. I’ve found acrobat ants in my hives now & then over the years, they really seem to like being in gutters with leafy debris, they sort of remind me of carpenter ants but on a smaller scale.
@australianpolyrhachis
@australianpolyrhachis Год назад
@@JPthebeeman Must have been a bity species, darn. Also those ants can nest right next to other bugs and ants as long as the chambers do not connect.
