Also known as the C-45 "Bucket of Bolts." This flight was offered through the CAF (Commemorative Air Force) air show at KBUR. We departed from runway 15 and flew out to Santa Monica, up the Malibu coast, then back to BUR for a low pass fly-by. I am pleased to share my flight with a perspective from the co-pilot's seat.
My fellow spotter friend Jay, also took a flight on this plane with footage from inside the cabin. You can see his Beech-18 video here

Your video is GREAT. Its quality is exceptional and above all I love the fact that there is no music to annoy the viewers, just the beautiful engines roar instead. Thanks for posting it.

Armafly I’m glad you enjoyed the flight :). I’ve since learned, use music where fitting. If your goal is to take people along for the ride, let the engine sound be the hero.

Great vid!! My Dad, as chief pilot for the old Auto-Lite Corp. (Toledo, OH), flew an '18' from 1940-1958. Flew a Staggerwing for two prior to buying the 18. Took delivery of it new at Beechcraft in Wichita. I flew in it many times as a young boy. Dad's history went back to 1919, when he was a flight instructor at the Presidio in San Francisco, then flew air mail up/down the west coast and midwest in the 20s, then early airline pilot in the 30s. He had quite a life!!

+LoveJT8D I certainly enjoyed your video and those Beech aircraft would have to be one of the best looking vintage planes. I live in central Australia and when I was young I remember DC3s flying over my home as we were close to the local airstrip. Also Caribou military planes would arrive and they sounded magnificent. Anyway you are certainly lucky to have flown in that lovely plane and thanks for sharing your footage!

I grew up in a town that was the corporate headquarters for a major oil company. During the 40s and 50s their two Beech 18s would depart sometime around 8:00 a.m. nearly every day. We lived about three miles away from the airport and the turn out after a takeoff on runway 17 would come right by our house. I could sit on my front porch on a summer morning and hear the power come up for the take off roll. I'll never forget the sound of the two radial engines coming to life! :-)
@LoveJT8D
@LoveJT8D 10 лет назад
That is really really neat! I would have loved to experience the sights and sounds of day-to-day operations of old radial engine aircraft. I am grateful for the various air shows today that still make it possible to fly on one. Thanks for watching!

I want to say it's a generator. In the video I shot of the B-29 two weeks ago you can hear something similar they engage before the props begin to crank. I can only assume it's a generator that provides the power to spin the prop during startup.

@LoveJT8D
@LoveJT8D 6 лет назад
AugustMeteors I hear you, that's one reason why I haven't been on FiFi yet or some of the larger bombers. Hopefully one day. On the other hand, the Bucket of Bolts was very reasonable around the 67-70 dollar range for a 25 minute ish flight.
@AugustMeteors
@AugustMeteors 6 лет назад
Yes, it's around that now, maybe a tad more. When we did the B-25 it was $800 for two of us for a half hour, and we just went and did it. Can sustain _one_ impulse purchase. Can't make a habit of it! So it's budget from here on in. The big bombers are worth budgeting for--you just hope you live long enough to get to all of them.

Very cool. I flew one of the Beach 18s in Valdosta, GA once. Would love to fly one again. Just sad when the pilot lands on the displaced threshold part prior to the runway. A bit of poor planning on his part. That runway at KBUR is plenty long enough to put it down ten feet beyond the threshold. Oops! ;-)
