When I was stationed in New Orleans in 1970, I belonged to the Navy Flying Club at NAS New Orleans. They had a yellow T-34 that I would have paid dearly to get some time in. Unfortunately, the T-34 was down for maintenance the entire time I was there and never left the ground. They had a 182 that was fun to fly and I would have done some serious cross-country with it except that you had to clean the oil off the windshield about every hour of flying time.

This is my father in law’s. He also got to see one when he was younger in Texarkana. A NAVY recruiter offered him a ride and he fell in love with the T-34. Now he’s able to reunite with the plane.

I got a chance to fly that T34 one day. I had been flying the 152 at the club and one day when I was driving by on a tug, a chief I knew from a different division stopped me and asked if I wanted to go up. So I parked the tug and we did a quick preflight and flew off in the thing. Flew around downtown, came back, did a few touch and goes in front of the flight line on the main runway then landed on the short 32 and parked the thing. My actual division chief had no idea I was gone all that time.
