I’m having a bit of a nightmare this week!!
Continuing work on the Goods Yard, I’m starting to look at the road to the Goods Shed. I’ve tried a DIY solution but without much success - maybe I’m just doing something wrong because I do quite like the finish?
The embossed/textured cobblestone sheets have arrived but they have a really noticeable sheen on them making them look unrealistic. Ive tried to ‘Matt’ them down but it doesn’t seemed to have worked - if anything they are more shiny!
I’m really open to ideas here as I do want the road surface to look right for the location and era.
I daren’t even think about the Brewery Yard surface……
Hope you enjoy the update, Andy.

Morning, you do yourself an injustice! Because of what you do and the great way in which you do it your “fail” is everyone else’s gain. You have saved all of us valuable time and money in your experiment, what I have used in the past on diaramas for road surface is wet and dry. You can change the dark colouring by rubbing your finger across the top and different grades will give a slightly different texture. You also say that the cement was quite old and it does have a shelf life! Keep up the good work, we’re all learning.🙈👍

Thank you. I’ve just watched a video where someone used wet and dry. Looks quite effective. I never thought about the cement having a shelf life! 👍

For my yards, I use woodland scenics B89 course gray ballast for my roads, then spray 50/50 PVA/water. Comes up fairly ok

I have been using grey grout for road surfaces. Works well.

Try using draught excluder tape for the edges as that should peel off easier.

Just re-viewed #10 Cobblestones, I don’t think that you can get any better than that. Tailored to fit the location and can be modelled at the bench. Cobbles and mills go together more than tarmac or gravel

Yes you’re right. I just dug out half a dozen sheets I had left so I’m going to give it a go (might take a while!) 👍

I have seen people use emery paper, also sand paper then painted ( different grit gives different textures )

I've had success with coloured tile grout for roads and platforms. It's easier to lay it wet but it can be laid dry, seal surfaces with PVA first, and it can be sanded, weathered and sealed with PVA when set. Its not as brittle as the mortar mix, dries to a consistent colour and seems to have a little bit of flex.
@DonningtonCastleModelRailway
@DonningtonCastleModelRailway 2 месяца назад
I’ve also had success with this approach. You can add fine sand to the grout for more texture if needed. I set mine with a water PVA mix which seems to add flex and then sand the surface to the finish needed. Really interesting to see your experiments and look forward to seeing how the scene develops.

How about using roofing felt cut into strips to your required width & length? I'm sure your local roofer would have plenty of offcuts that he doesn't need.

Metcalfe do printed sheets of cobbled surface, and, if you are feeling adventurous, they have individual cobbles.

I ran into the same issue till I used un-sanded grout. You can see what I did on JOT43. I use 3M double-sided foam tape. It worked pretty well. I like the cobblestone looked maybe try some weathering powder over the matte or try some Flat clear Tamiya? I enjoy your videos and look forward to seeing the way you model this area.

as someone has already mentioned Slaters do vacuum formed cobbled sheets and I think South-eastern fine scale do them as well.

you should try polystyrene sheet or flexible fun foam sheets. you can score it with a knife and weather it.

Yes. I did some cobblestones like that for a signal box. I’ve got some left over so might give it a go. Just wanted something with texture so that could be the answer 👍

Try the shiny cobbles in-situ. If they don't catch the light you may not be able to tell if it's shiny.

Road fail: I agree with @mrpaulc54. Experimentation is all part of this hobby; this is how we all learn. The final mix look a little loose. May be if you had tapped the board in an attempt to remove the bubbles? Other modellers have used grit paper for roads, but if the intended area is a large parking/work area, then may be this is not the way to go. Visually, it looks as though the curved point is the way to go.

How feasible would it be to put a small heap of that concrete premix onto those cobblestone sheets and then push it around a bit with your fingers (or maybe a small dry sponge,) to scuff up the surface slightly to take the shine off and then brush off the remainder. I think the reflection is the result of a smooth surface so this might hopefully reduce that smoothness.

I tHink the problem is the buildings need more depth to pull off the look your trying for... Maybe make new deeper roofs a d side walls and worry less about a road and more on a walkway.

Other suggestions are Hobbycraft do a crafting concrete paste, cheap amd cheerful and works well. Another alternative for cobbles is DAS clay and make the cobbles with a bic pen (remove the nib/ink first!) and just press into the clay. Time consuming but effective. Good luck, I'm enjoying following your journey. Cheers, Scott

Plaster card paving slabs painted up would look good, it would be more to scale if you copy 3'x 2' slabs at 12mm x 8mm. Just my thoughts.

Solder the flexitrac joiners to the turnout so it’s one unit then you will get a transition curve. The yanks do it this way.

Best results I'vee seen is sand paper road over plastic card... Gutters are made by wider plastic card then Curbs of plastic card and pavement lengths of plastic card. Paint the lot to taste. Pot holes or cracks can be made by cuts to the sand paper and cork below. This should make road higher the cork in upto three layers.

@@Grandadstrainroom-pn3tt You could even use coarse paper. Have a look in the hardware store next time you pass.

Glad you abandoned the cement idea. Tried it once and one sharp knock on the baseboard when you are pulling something out from underneath and you will have a pile bits, not a roadway! I have used Metcalfe cobbled board which looks good but no texture however not so bad with some weathering. Curved point looks good and the Peco Streamline. large radius gives few issues. Stay away from the Setrack small radius. Great space savers but not good for running. I think they have brought out a Streamline version but not seen any reviews but if you don’t have to go down to 2nd radius anything, just avoid it!
