Yes!!! that's awesome!! I know you got the flame mixture balanced and stuff, but a good cheater way to keep the flame stable is to put a flare on the end of the burner. It's much more forgiving, but it does mean you need a bigger hole in the furnace for it to fit.

When the flame separates, it means the gas/air mixture is flowing faster than the flame can burn it. As soon as the flame moves away from the orifice, it becomes turbulent and slows down which allows the combustion to catch up. To stabilize the flame you need a burner nozzle. This slows the air as it exits the burner tube and allows the flame to sit happily in the nozzle. Too much gas and you get orange and yellow tongues from unburned gas. Too lean and the flame is very blue and short.

I had the same issues and as others have said, a flare on the end will make it work great. I used an old 3/4 drive socket... about an 1 1/8" I believe.

I'm excited to see what you will do with this.

Bell on the end slows the air down and more complete burn occurs (wont blow out).

Add a blower on it then it is just a wall switch for speed and a gas regulator for gas pressure it works a charm! I'd also recommend firewool as a insulator I've cast aluminum and brass no problem.

If you put a flare at the end of the burner you'll have a much easier time controlling the flame.

Yeah, that is so basic you'd think this guy would know it.

The way to solve the issue with the flame lifting off like that is to add an interupter for the gas flow. A simple sink strainer or piece of steel mesh can help immensely. I know there is some kinda industry standard for the size of your gas orafece in relation to the gas tube size and the gas flow at the end of your tube.

In your furnace the flame will behave in a very different way, most furnace burners won't hold a flame in the open atmosphere.

Now I've never had good luck keeping a pressured flame without a cuppler/mixing flare...?. Even if it's in my forge or not.. I just set a flare coupler right in my refectory mud and I just screw my burner in and out as I need to..

Flare the exhaust end and it'll hold the flame no problem.

when not in a forge or foundry a burner like this need a flare to hold the flame!

Hay brotha, you did an awesome job on that forge burner but you didn't need to cut it down you just needed a flare or a cup at the end so the gas and air can swirl and mix to create a pressurized flame.. I think I was clear right? .. I'ze don't talk good sumtimz! ..lol. you get it..

Building this might be above the capability of the tools I presently own. Still good information for a future build.

Needs something for combustion. Try 3/4 pipe. 10"

Nice, I guess,,,for a machinist with the tools but as hobbyist foundry maker we cannot reduce half inch threads down to three eights.

when the pipe is in a foundry or forge you do not need the flair, the flair is for open air ,my propane rosebud. alltough you can use the burnner with the flair in forge or foundry. O say about 2600 f . brass bronze no problem iron say 31 32 hunderd .ok just get a coke fur. coal is good. GLOBAL WARMING NO. We ar over du for a major ice age.Thank you. BY GOD.
