Took us through some really head scratching dry material before getting the the crux of the topic......that bees use condensation to get through the winter without dehydrating.

I also think the queen movement, is generated by the queen regulating the moisture content in the hive center. She senses, either too little, or too much moisture, to move the hive to either stores, or some other method of controlling the moisture.

He Mentions Tibor Szabo doing the study near Guelph. Szabo does keep bees near Guelph now. However, Guelph is very far from Alberta where the study was said to have been performed. Alberta is generally colder than Guelph.

I'd say a simple rule is don't intervene in the hive during wintertime. How difficult could that be 🙏

THe experiment by Mobius that Ben Harden uses to illustrate insulation caused the bees to dehydrate is not a realistic example of insulation use. Mobius alternated insulation with no insulation every few weeks on the same colony. That this alternation caused deterimental or stressed behaviour is interesting but not an indication of the behavour when constant conditions prevail.

We specifically select for colonies that naturalize properly and DONT raise brood during the late fall and winter. Most colonies that continuously raise brood into winter don't survive.

Top of hive must well insulation but you have to open under hive. Co² exit O² enter. Top Side warm down Side cold.

I think ben is not taking into account, (saying no insulation), the condensation at the top of the hive. SO, put a thin sheet of styrofoam, under the lid, to prevent dripping down on the bees, and have a lower opening, (small), and an upper, by the roof, exit, for the moist air and co2 to escape.
