As a physics student I stumbled upon this music at the very end of the listed music in the Golden Record inserted on the Voyager spacecraft. I now listen to this almost daily. This became my favorite performance of this beautiful piece, I have listened to many versions but this was the second I heard and the first one that had the video and not only the audio recording. The first time I saw it as soon as they started to play it tears came to my eyes in a rare awe-like moment because this was the first piece of classical music that connected with me, the first one that i could really appreciate and the one that changed my perspective on art and why you need art in your life. I can see now why it was chosen to represent human emotions to any form of intelligent life that could potentially find it in the space probes that have now traveled to the interstellar medium. This is really something special. Thank you.

I agree with everything you say here, and second it emphatically - though I am not a physics student, but an old man who has been a philosophy/humanities/comparative religion/music student all my long life. I find this piece sums up perfectly what is art and beauty on this planet, and the creative consciousness of a vigorous and intelligent human being facing his own mortality. Beethoven was on his deathbed and knew it, and composed one quartet after another. I think they were addressed to God or the universe, and we are privileged to listen in. Do you know his last quartet (opus 135)?

Nice. But how on earth do you think this is the best performance? There seem to be multiple times where the bass is to high and the first violin too low. It's good but not even top 5.

my favorite, outstanding expression of inner agony which is pretty hard to describe!! If someone can manage to convert this feeling to the words, don't think it would be able to create the same impact that this musical work does..That shows what Beethoven, the genius is all about!!

Yes. This is such a moving performance - so simple and fresh and direct.

As miss Ji-Won very emotionally mentions, this work, from an already mature Beethoven, depicts the introspection he must have had while composing. It’s as if he was putting with notes his remembrances, sad by the sound of it. Very nice interpretation, thanks !

quite a quick tempo but a beautifully woody sound and an honesty which does touch the heart, as the Master may have said 'I can see that you mean it'

This is the last track on the Voyager golden disc... this can be the first and last piece of human art that is ever encountered by an alien civilization

Jascha and Ludwig would be getting emotional somewhere. Lovely performance!

A beautiful job. The other first violinist (the proper term for the violinist not playing first violin) contributes vitally and powerfully to the whole effect.

Yes, I noticed that too. Not to leave out the others, but the dialog between the two violins is special in this piece.

What a stupid thing to say. Something bothers you about anything but “first place”?? Puhleeeeeze.

Sebastiandangerfield9933: The term "second violin(ist)" has a degrading quality. In a string quartet, and in an orchestra, the violinists are all first violinists; they just play different parts. Both violinists in a string quartet must be first-rate. There can be no drop-off of quality or skill set from one to the other. Alexander Schneider and John Dalley showed us all what a vital and powerful personality does for a quartet in the other first violin chair.

The 1997 film One Night Stand brought me here. What a depressing but beautiful score.

There's a deep vulnerability in the Cavatina that you don't often hear in Beethoven.

Beautifully communicated, both in your words and your playing - everyone's playing. I'm only sorry that Beethoven didn't find a way to let the viola really sing its special tone in this piece.

I find it so sad that the only generation that seems to appreciate this music is the older one. Luckily it seems there are more people like me in the young generation enjoying classical music.

Do not be too worried; as they get older, many of them will come to appreciate these beautiful pieces that speak to the hearts of those who have known loss. On the other hand, the older people rarely seem to enjoy the new music of each successive generation. Tit for tat. :)

Came here after Alfred Brendel playing Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.32 in C minor, 3rd movement. (Adagio.) Wonder if Ludwig rated this Catavina above that. Emotional depth, development and contrast-wise, I really can't see how. In comparison, it feels like the kind of turgid, inoffensive background music one might hear in an English village tea 'n scone shop. Also nichts besonderes, Herr Maestro.
