Overture: 0.00 Act 1: 00.06.08 Act 2: 01.08.49
This recording is something of a “troubled child”. It circulated for many years on open reel and was originally released on CD claiming to be from San Francisco on 29 November 1968, though the opera that night was Madama Butterfly, and Fidelio was not performed there in 1968. The role of the Second Prisoner was given as Robert Goodloe, but it is in fact Clifford Harvuot. It’s now generally accepted that this performance took place in New York on 2 January 1971 in a run of performances of a new production to mark the bicentenary of Beethoven’s birth.

Thanks for bringing this issue up. I remember hearing this broadcast from the MET on the correct date here. Later when I purchased the CD I spotted what I was sure was an error in both the date & locale. Sure enough. In the discography data to the Vicker‘s bio it indicates that in 1968 Vickers had no performances as Florestan at all. A splendid performance from all & I like especially Tozzi‘s less greedy approach to Rocco which is similar, in this respect, to his characterization as Daland which was my opinion as well when interpreting the role. Tozzi also, IMO, had in both these characters an ideal timbre of voice. Vickers, Rysanek, & Berry are in great form here & at that time we’re virtually unequalled in all aspects of these roles.

Thank you for posting this, and correcting the information. That explains why the supposed SF Opera '68 performance always sounded just like the Met '71!!! I saw one of the shows in that run, and listened to the broadcast. It was sheer magic. Leonie was incredible, as was Vickers, and Judy Blegen perfect. And Böhm (who did include the Leonore #3) superb. Everyone should be able to hear this, and you are making that possible!

What a great cast and the great Leonie Rysanek shines here. What a fabulous Leonore she was. This live performance shows her finest qualities more than her commercial recording with Fricsay I think.

Thank you for posting this classic performance. This was the Met broadcast of 1/2/71; I thought Bohm played the Leonore Overture#3 as well, but I could be wrong. Act 1, s.1: 6:09 Act 1, s.2: 32:08 Act 2, s.1: 1:08:49 Act 2, s.2: 1:39:50

I think you're right, David. I'm sure it was there on my old Ed Rosen open reel, which I no longer have, but it's not on this version.

@@starrman22 Thank you so much for this Gem. I was at these performances and they were beyond words magical in the theatre. David Hensel is correct that Bohm did indeed play the Leonore # 3 in this series of performances. Thanks for consistently thrilling us with your amazing collection.

Thank you for all these wonderful Leonie performances. Years ago I found on YT a Boheme, probably from Vienna, with Leonie as a wild Musetta. I have not been able to find that again. Might you have it and, if you do, would you upload it here? Thanks so much.

That would have been Lotte Rysanek. I'm pretty sure Leonie never sang Musetta, even in the early days. There's a great site you can check at Wiener Staatsoper Archiv.

@@starrman22 I am afraid you are probably right. Only Lotte sang that role in Vienna. When I heard the audio a few years back I was sure it was Leonie. No mistaking her screams and hoots. But I guess I mis-heard. Thanks for helping me clarify this mystery.
