“Black Medium Current” by Dødheimsgard is at the top of my list of the best extreme metal albums from the last five years. I had read many rumors about its greatness, innovation, and worthiness of a listen, so I was quite excited when I first listened to it. The first song hit, and it was incredible. However, after a while, it became heavy to listen to; the fourth song started with a jazzy jingle, and that was it-I couldn’t tolerate it anymore. But I was wrong. After a couple more rounds, the album sneakily, like a serpent’s drift, entered my veins, and now I need to play it at least once a week.
Everything is in its perfect place (apart from a couple of short intermezzos that can be easily skipped): the production is balanced, allowing you to recognize each line. The vocal work is just amazing, with many lines and choruses layered here and there, making it both complex and melodic. The genres involved vary from pure black metal to electronic music, so you need to be open-minded when approaching it.
What I present to you here is my music box carillon version of the melancholic intro of “Et Smelter,” a black metal reference to Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Additionally, the album cover references Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon”, and in a sense, it is as revolutionary as that album.
