The most insightful recorded performance of this work. Gould shows that Beethoven composed this concerto for two hands, the standard performance usually overemphasizes the right hand, but Gould reveals the important material in the left hand. Also, Gould and Bernstein are careful to emphasize the philosophical aspects of this profound concerto, slowing the tempo when necessary to make their points. This is not a period approach, but digs deeply into the contents. The most rewarding performance ever is right here.

How would you consider Grimaud's performance of the same concerto? It's on RU-vid, An d according to her, this concerto is the one closest to her heart. By the way, Grimaud's piano idol is Gould. She is also considered the female Glen Gould. Eerily, I see Gould's mannerisms in Grimaud's playing.

@martakasznar8943 Год назад
I put a lot of emphasis on the cadence because it tells a lot about the person writing the cadence, his opinion of the work, and his evaluation of it. The good writing and execution of the cadenza can enhance the value of the entire work, out, for that l'as a listener need to knaw the work thoroughly. Gould is also perfect, and completely individual an this.

It's ludicrous that Gould has to sing along with his playing. I also admit I'm not much impressed with his cadenza; it's too long and lacks the originality I expected from him. Nevertheless, I felt this was a very effective and even illuminating performance, organically developed and conceptually consistent. Beethoven's Fourth is my favorite concerto, and I have lost count of the many excellent pianists I have heard giving it a go. I don't have an ideal reading of it in mind and I like it when I hear new ideas about interpretation of some section or phrase emerge. Gould at the piano and Bernstein at the podium both bring out aspects I hadn't contemplated before, for my tastes a very good thing and an earnestly sought pleasure. I'll be listening to this one again.

@benhurr8651

Disagree. Gould sings along with his music - get used to it. Utter mastery and at one-ness with the composer lets him get away with it. Most exquisite performance of Beethoven concerto have heard for some years. Came to Gould through late Brahms Intermezzi. No other performer has in the same manner opened up this work and Beethoven to me. (Doing a late Beethoven spurt after years of mostly Brahms!)

Good in many ways, and yet? Did Gould shackle himself too much to Lenny? What would he do with a more HIP conductor today, let alone a broad-minded period-instruments guy like Gardiner, who takes this a couple of minutes faster, and the Emperor several minutes faster?
