Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a composer of extraordinary gifts, but a lifetime of maladies - including the almost-total loss of his hearing - threatened his ability to write music. He would overcome thoughts of suicide to compose his masterwork: the Ninth Symphony and its optimistic final movement, "Ode to Joy." Correspondent Mo Rocca talks with biographer Jan Swafford and conductor Marin Alsop about Beethoven's incredible triumph over terrible mental and physical suffering; and with a hearing specialist who has created a simulation of how Beethoven actually heard his music.

The minds ear. What a provocative thought. The man couldn't physically hear what he composed but he he could hear in his mind. Just like we hear a song in our head even though it's not playing. I'd never thought about music that way before. In my own mind, music is a large part of my life and I can imagine still enjoying it even without hearing.

There is a just a degree of difference from turning rage, sadness, longing, into passion, love and hope. The human problem is that we give up and stop trying to overcome challenges. Beethoven was determined to not let nobody and nothing preventing him from having his music communicate what his humanity could not. He transcended himself.

I have seen this symphony performed twice in person, to include by maestra Marin Alsop’s Baltimore Symphony Orchestra & I get chills. It is the most powerful piece of music in the entire Western cannon of art.

My late husband wrote a line about "the music the deaf man hears". Then we met and he discovered how much I adore Beethoven's work, the 9th above all others. Every time I listen to the 9th now, those words run through my head. Inarguably, THE finest piece of music ever written!

I was lucky enough to be in the choir for a performance of this piece... singing a song about joy and unifying humanity shoulder to shoulder with fellow singers and a full symphony, I would choke up almost every time! So moving and powerful.

Forget all that modern auto-tuned music- this music from two centuries was where all the magic was, with Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Haydn, Vivaldi, etc.

Excellent piece for national TV, something that has been almost completely lost in the modern era. I hope more of these are produced and that popular culture will once again be exposed to greatness such as the Ninth. Also fabulous is the inclusion of one of my favorite musicologists, Jan Swafford. Bravi to all involved.

The Ninth is the greatest symphony of all time and I would argue that his Violin Concerto, which is the only violin concerto he wrote, is the greatest violin concerto of all time.

growing up, Snoopy and Schroeder among other people told us that the Maestro was born on December 16th. I accepted that. somewhere along the line my best friend told me that the Ninth is the single most perfect piece of music ever written, so i listened to it until i knew it very well, and then some, can never tire of it. right at the end, one note is struck 17 times, not really in keeping with the piece. 17. 17 times, one note. The Maestro is speaking from beyond the grave, and his birthday is December 17th. (smile)

I have never before heard Marin Alsop expound on any subject other than herself. Since she has led the Baltimore Symphony for many years, this is my first time hearing her discuss something other than her own accomplishments - oh, and her famous menor, Leonard Bernstein.

It may be apocryphal but I have heard that when they were developing the music CD 💿 they settled on a length (75 minutes or so) that would accommodate Beethoven's 9th on a single CD. 👍🙂

on an lp they had to cut out the repeats in the 2nd movement.....how many wasted minutes of Eugene Ormandy, Bernstein, so many others cut out because there wasn't room?

Very interesting. Odd that this does not mention that the "Ode to Joy" movement is, in fact, the official anthem of the European Union. They could not have chosen a more fitting piece of music. Inspiring, moving, and thoroughly European.

I have been in choirs that performed the 9th. Such a feeling of power came over me. And, having a working knowledge of German certainly helped. Ja, das hat mir gefallen.

It's so confounding, to me, that, for some reason, G-d feels the need to pressurize us, through adversity, to bring out the best in us. I wish He could figure out a less harrowing way to do it. I wish joyful music could come from joy, and not from suffering.

20 years ago, I was in a group singing class. On the first night, the teacher asked everyone what is the one piece of vocal music they'd want to perform if given the chance. Everyone but me said Handel's MESSIAH; I said "Beethoven's Ninth." Five years later, I got to do it.
