The ghost with the most is back in "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice." Tim Burton revisits one of his most iconic films 36 years later with a sequel that taps into the nostalgia of the original while also offering new characters and ideas. We're mixed on how well it works, but we both had a good time. Michael Keaton returns to one of his most beloved roles as the mischievous spirit who thrives on wreaking havoc. Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara also are back, with Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe among the new cast members. Written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. In theaters now.

Saw it this afternoon and thought it was a hoot. I loved seeing the great Michael Keaton and the amazing Winona Ryder together again. The whole cast was fun. Jenna Ortega struck all the right notes. I LOVE the soul train. 😂

This is probably the most disappointing sequel I’ve seen in theaters since Spider-Man 3. Horribly unfocused, jokes that constantly fall flat, and unnecessary supporting characters that don’t add anything to the film. It really shouldn’t have been that hard to take what they had on the page and make it more cohesive.

30.8K subs!!!!!!!!!!! I think Christy may regret that low score once she watches it again, the chaos/absurdity is what makes it so great. I'm glad "The Leftovers" got a mention, such a great show that was.

That was 😂 the hardest I laughed when bob was blowing his cheeks back and started yelling when the stitches flew out. Idk why but the shot just went on like 40 frames too long but it was really funny.

I had a lot of fun with this. There were way too many plots and characters and a lot of it felt undercooked, but it does a great job of recapturing the chaotic spirit of the original. I loved this movie's version of the "Day-O" number and was kind of thrilled that they just ... kept going and finding things to do with it (especially the "action movie" sections of that song!).

4 out of 5 for me. My most anticipated of the year!!!! It wasn’t as good as the first but I don’t think they were ever striving to do that. What I can say tho is that this was a good time. My 7PM screening in Cinemark XD was PACKED. Bunch of the audience (myself included) was wearing Beetlejuice apparel (I was wearing a t shirt and an over shirt both of which I got from Walmart). It was such a blast. When the 🎥 was starting you heard a couple of scattered applauses. The 🎥 was such a blast. This was Tim Burton firing on all cylinders. It’s so practical!!! Old school tricks is what you’d want with something like this. The cast is great and everyone has a moment (some get more attention than others but that’s also cuz you’re at 104 minutes and you need to keep the story moving). I was so happy to be back in this world. When the 🎥 ended a lot of applause erupted.

Just came from seeing the movie and mostly really enjoyed, but there seemed to be too many characters that didn’t do much and Beetlejuice was just not mean and mischievous enough.

As a European, I do kind of know what Soul Train was, but only through cultural osmomis, because you stumble upon it in some way in so much of American media. There's no emotional resonance though.

I went back to see it a second time to stay for the post credit scene mentioned in this review. She must’ve been referring to the dream sequence at the end of the movie before the credits. No post credit scene.

Yes agree with Christie, I liked it more than I didn’t like it despite it being scattered!! Monica was totally wasted though, ‘cause even though she was great , her role went nowhere! My favourite bit was the Soul Train!!! The guy behind me laughed all the way thru, so obviously there is enough there for many!!

I walked out also scratching my head about why Monica and Willem were even there since they were so poorly used. And I thought the 3 generations with Catherine/Winona/Jenna were really well done and surprisingly touching. Did I see a different set of credits?! I stayed thru the end. Or was it when I applauded for Bob? (Using him as my FB profile pic now)

This movie is great in part because of how much is going on and the fact that you don’t know where it’s going because of that. So many mainstream movies nowadays are just point A -> point B. This zig zagged all over the place all while having great actors and set design/practical effects. 8/10

I think Christy is right but I had less fun with it than she did. Sure the first one was messy but at least it was original with it. I found this one to be much messier, with old riffs and gags not as good as they were first time around, and new elements that didn't work well together. It picks up in the last 20 minutes or so, but I was very disappointed overall.
@musicmann1967
@musicmann1967 8 дней назад
It really is a mess, but I was definitely entertained. And yes, that big musical number went on too long. And I LOVE that song too ( I was singing along! haha). But even being too long, there was stuff in it that I liked. I have to go back and watch the first one again to see if it's the mess that Alonso says it is. He's probably right, i just don't remember it that way. Yesterday, my fellow IMAX audience members seemed to really like this new one. I think the word of mouth will be good.

I haven’t seen it, but They probably created a loophole that they moved on to the next realm or something. If I remember correctly the ghosts don’t age past what they were when they died, so they had to do something to kind of shoo them to the side because of how long it’s been.

I liked it although a bit overstuffed and the great Monica belluchi was underutilized… the production design, score, set design, costumes, Michael Keaton are all excellent. The story fell flat but I’d give it a 7/10.

Pains me to say this, but I really thought it was awful. The first hour or so was incredibly boring. The various subplots feel like they're just padding the runtime. Dafoe is wasted. Theroux was terrible. I don’t recommend 😕

Even if this is good I refuse to see it. As long as we keep paying for this endless IP scavenging they're going to keep doing it
@tyleronearth
@tyleronearth 9 дней назад
I don’t think all IP use is the same. In this case it’s Tim Burton the original Director making something that seems to be a bit of a passion project for him. It’s not the same thing as the studio just dusted it off with a new cast and crew.
@Deondre_Clark
@Deondre_Clark 9 дней назад
@tyleronearth maybe but that's not what the studio heads think. If it makes money they won't think it's bc it was a passion project. They'll just be reinforced in their risk averse thinking

i actually disagree with how they treated the characters. i think that they are essentially all just the same person. i didnt believe that Winona Ryder is was Jenna Ortega's mom. idk, all the characters really dont evolve past what we knew them as.

The worst memberberries in this one is also the dayO song. Why even play it here. It’s for the audience. And I hated the horrendous musical number at the end too … it felt like they anchored the last act around the song.

I liked the movie almost as much as I disliked it. The vibes are immaculate, and the cast is game, but narratively, the movie is a mess. There are like 4 plots mushed into this thing, all of which are paper thin. Characters disappear for long stretches (what the hell is Monica Bellucci even doing here?) and pop back in just in time for their arcs to be resolved in the most anticlimactic way possible. The Soul Train bit irked me. Burton has been rightfully criticized for his response to the lack of diversity in his movies, so he resolves that by cramming a bunch of Black background actors in an extended shuck and jive session in the back half of the movie.

As a big movie viewing audience, I've never watched the original, just some scenes here and there. So, low expectations for this movie. It's silly and nonsensical. But that is Beetlejuice. It's okay, but very forgetful. But they must do a third one to complete the mantra.

Avoided reviews but it was very boring and very disappointing. A retread with very little fun and I wondered why William dafoe is even in this as he took so much screen time away from the cast and did nothing. Monica belucci is also wasted. The evil kid plot line went nowhere and opps he’s dead. Not sure how this is reviewing well. It’s very bottom of the barrel Burton. 4/10 (I loved the first movie)
