Lydia (Winona Ryder) is introduced to Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton), better known as Beetlejuice, the ghost with the most. Oh, and Beetlejuice eats a bug or two.
ABOUT BEETLEJUICE
Michael Keaton, Academy Award winner Geena Davis, Alex Baldwin and Winona Ryder star in director Tim Burton's comic twist on supernatural horror tales--Beetlejuice. When a couple of nice, young homebody ghosts (Baldwin and Davis) try to haunt the pretentious humans who have moved into their house, they ask for help from a demonic wraith (Keaton) they cannot control in this comic fantasy that mixes the quick and the dead with a laugh and a fright.

I love that small moment of humanity after she tells him she wants to be dead. His befuddled “why?” gave me the thought that there was someone there behind his madness.

Isn’t it also implied (at least in this movie) that he also died by suicide? Since he was Juno’s partner and in the movie anyone who takes their own life becomes a civil servant

It never made sense because of the "you'll tell your friends and they're calling me up" because if she figured it out through the chardes she'd know it regardless and would still tell everyone

2:45 is such a example of good directing. Beetlejuice taking off the sun bathing glasses makes the scene go from red to white like it would in real life. Fantastic.

When you watch it again, you realize how relatable Lydia is for us all when we're at our low points. Girl just didn't know her place in life and thought death would give the answer. EDIT: Tbc, people in the comments, I am in NO WAY endorsing death. I am simply pointing out how the movie (and the Maitlands) do a good job at telling Lydia (the living) that death is much more confusing than life. In a way, the movie is about appreciating life even when it seems confusing.

I also asked myself that many times in the past. Maybe the second movie will reveal that. However, as the Maitlands and other ghosts call each other by name without problems, we can safely presume it's just his own personal issue. He's probably cursed in some way, but he doesn't want to tell Lydia here, probably because the reason is personal and definitely because she would get suspicious about him.

Love this scene. Makes me laugh all the time. I think this was lacking in the new beetlejuice movie. His excitement and enthusiasm in part 1 was what made that movie. Part 2 was missing many of the characters from the original movie. I was very disappointed with beetlejuice 2 movie. Too much cursing and horrible script.

3:41 Who is Lydia going to tell about “him?” Who is going to believe her? Lydia’s own parents didn’t believe her claims that a ghostly married couple are still in their countryside home. Does “he” really think that people will believe Lydia’s claims about “him?” I mean heck, we are all in this with Lydia and I still don’t believe in life after death. 🤷🏻‍♂️
