Let's all just appreciate Barbra and Adam because I feel like they are really underrated even though they are technically the main characters. Especially Barbra, I mean, she tames a sandworm in less than a minute and rides in on it. All in a wedding dress.
Greek Millenial they’re supposed to be dude. Through the movie its basically comparing them to the Deetz’s, as they have a very modern New York style. Whereas the Maitland’s have a countryside style...
Lily McAllister that's why they're underrated and unappreciated. The performances aren't that memorable either Alec Baldwin doesn't even like his performance apparently
Can we just talk bout how ICONIC Wiona Ryder is. She was Lydia, in beetle juice. She was Veronica in heathers. And now she is Joyce on Netflix’s most popular tv show: Stranger Things.
I love how at 1:38-1:39 when Lydia is asked if she takes Beetlejuice as her husband - Beetlejuice smiles embarrassed and happy thinking that she will say yes when she suddenly shouts "NO !" and scares him XD
+BlackRose Garden for the Strange and Unusual The reason why Beetlejuice is scared is because Lydia was about to say his name three times which would cause him to go back inside the model and back inside the grave he was a prisoner in.
@@cripplingchips She probably only agreed to marry Beetlejuice only if he agreed to help save Adam and Barbara since he lied when promising that he'll help them after seeing him causing problems especially before she freed him from the model his talking was like he was saying "if I help them, you have to promise to marry me" which she said "okay." (Of course, she could have said his name anytime after 1:54 unless he magically took her voice away preventing her from saying anything especially his name).
@@cripplingchips That might be true that Beetlejuice prevented the Maitlands from becoming completely skeletal but, he was still causing trouble by knocking Maxie Dean and his wife out of the roof and then he caused Otho's clothes to rip off, and it's unknown if he was going to do something bad to Lydia's parents (Charles and Delia) next causing her to not care about promising to marry him with him being a troublemaker (just like Juno the Maitland's caseworker said).
Me too and you know we are not the only ones as Michael stated himself in an interview that Beetlejuice was his favorite character to play and also stated he has always wanted to do a sequel and still up for it to this day.
Yeah? Since like, the 1600’s or something. I mean seriously, who’s idea was that? I personally don’t like the fact that you have to get a license to spend your life with the person you love.
In some places if you live together in a verified monogamous relationship for seven years or more you can still legally be considered married. It's just harder to prove in a court of law. That's all the document is used for, proof.
Every time I watch this film, the one thing that always gets me on edge are the freaking animated sculptures! The way they move, the sounds they make, even their appearance unnerves me all the time.
Beetlejuice is presented as the villain in this scene despite completing his end of the bargain in a deal he was completely up front with and Lydia agreed to
I was just talking to my boyfriend about this. Why is it that the villains keep their ends of bargains when making deals with others-like the heroes-and end up getting the short end of the stick because the heroes didn't honor their end of the bargain. This movie is a good example, as well as Disney's Hercules.
Yeah i miss ORIGINAL THINKING!! I Loved All the films up to A Nightmare Before Christmas & Corps Bride but after that i think he kinda painted himself into a corner. I Love his unique signature, Even his obsession with Johnny Depp!! Ehhh Now-a-days its a pathetic attempt. You can see him coming a mile away! They can try to remake Beetlejuice but I'm pretty sure it will surly suck balls!!!!!
smoothrasin Yes, I was just thinking that Nightmare Before Christmas seemed like his last ORIGINAL work. Everything since is pretty much a freakin remake! LOL
drlee2 Though, technically, that movie was directed by Henry Selick (Who also did Coraline and the highly-underrated Monkeybone), as Burton was doing "Batman Returns" at the time.
+VoidedMirror The only ones who knew that Beetlejuice's name is a spell is Barbara, Adam, Juno, and Lydia but, Lydia's parents Delia and Charles don't know about it. I'm sure if Charles knew, he would have been able to say it since he was just tied up by the arms but Delia was all grabbed up and covered in the face by the hat.
Lydia does try, but Beetlejuice took away her voice. Adam and Barbara also try saying his name, but they've just recovered from the exorcism; Barbara is particularly exhausted from the experience. Delia and Charles don't know his name and don't realize that saying it three times will banish Beetlejuice.
Yes! When Beetlejuice was contemplating his answer to marry Lydia, she could have said it without him noticing. Plus Barbara could've said it when her and Adam were back to normal. Either way, even if they didn't see every chance they had to say it, i still adore this movie
For some reason, when I watched this movie for the first time, I actually wanted them to get married! LOL, I realize now that it wouldn't have been a very good idea.
I love the way Delia holds Lydia close, that shows not all step moms are wicked and evil. Some really care for the child and the way Delia held Lydia showed that she cared for her
Fun fact: There is a rhyme that states what each color means if you choose it for your wedding dress. for red it goes "Dress in Red, you'll wish yourself dead." Seems kind of appropriate, doesn't it?
Love Michael Keaton. How he wasn't even considered for Best Actor at The Osacrs that year for this role amazes me. This role was like nothing he had EVER done before and his performance was "Go hard or go home!" I love this movie. Very underrated.
Definitely my favorite Tim Burton movie! So many great moments. It’s a shame Beetlejuice is hardly even in the entire movie because he’s such a blast to watch. I love his dance when he’s outside the strip club LOL
It was a combination of 'nice to meet you', 'sorry', 'no hard feelings', 'thanks for saving us' expression while Lydia waiting for a reaction until they smile at each other.
for me the scene at 0:03 "shall we?" is the best acting scene. Incredible plastic and animated, I sincerely believe no actor ever got close to that, he is a more like a cartoon than a person. I believe the director told Keaton play your character how you want it, we don't care and then Keaton went in there with no direction and no constrains and unleashed everything he could and did a hell of a job.
Yet Lydia's kept the ring and by the time the cartoon was made, the Maitlands crossed over and Lyds and BJ became BFFs to the point that the B-guy clearly has a obsession with his little goth human companion.
Am I the only one who's a little pissed that Lydia didn't keep up with her end of the deal? I mean really...how bad would it be being married to the Ghost with the Most? lol
I am too, I mean all he really wanted was to be free, and he didn't really have to keep his end of the bargain, but he did... besides, he's so bloody adorable. :D
Shanethefilmmaker Actually, some fans of both the film and series WANT the wedding anyway. Lydia DID make a deal, after all, and he kept his end of the bargain, and as they say, "A deal's a deal...even with a dirty dealer." Even the original proposed sequel, Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, was going to tone down BJ and make him and Lyds friends (possibly more), which inevitably lead to the cartoon spin-off. Naturally, because that first sequel concept never got off the ground beyond a script and a new one is being done as a 20-years-afterward story, with Keaton still as Betelgeuse and Ryder reprising Lydia, but now as a 40+ something, Lydia can make up her own mind (of course, since Glen Shadix as Otho is actually dead, having ironically fallen down stairs, and Jeffrey Jones as Charles Deetz is a real-life sexual predator, which might account for why he didn't stop the undead Keaton from trying to marry his movie daughter, they won't be coming back for Beetlejuice 2, but it's a lock officially that Burton as director, Keaton as The Ghost With The Most, and Ryder as the now-middle aged Lydia will be on board). After all, although 16 is the legal age of consent in many states, it's still taboo, and even if Burton thrives off that, he had to placate to those who would invest in the film, as opposed to doing it the way he wanted, with Betel as a chaotic neutral anti-hero and Otho as the true villain, but now, with Lydia being 40+ and able to choose her own path in life, or death as the case might be, all bets and shackles (unless used for "Mr. Beetleman"s perversion) are off, so Burton can canonize BJ/Lyds now if he wants.
The cartoon made their relationship (to me) look implied romantic even though it's totally illegal since in the cartoon she was probably even younger than in the movie. O_o
+Nightman221k: She was. 13. in the cartoon. Definite squick. Nevermind the innuendos. Also, the Rule 34 the animators literally drew during breaks that are the in-canon answer to the B-guy's red finger tips, since he admits, "I get my fingers into everything" & "I really get into my work", and the naughty pics were set during Lydia's menstrual cycle.
I would like to think that if they made a new movie about a 40 yr old plus Lydia, they should also fully redeem BJ's character. I mean he had already started to change by the time of the TV series anyways.I personally like the idea that the kind hearted Lydia changed BJ into a better person over time. At around 40 yrs old Lydia would be approaching the end of her youth days, and heading into middle age. If I were writing the script I would have her actually sacrificing herself and dying for BJ,her parents,or the Maitlands by the end.As the recently deceased she would no longer age anymore, and she could become BJ's eternal bride.
Beetlejuice used to be Juno's assistant (which incidently means he committed sucide). While there he abused his position and got into trouble with a very powerful entity (God?) who placed a curse on him. He cannot enter the mortal world unless summoned and can be instantly banished once there. It greatly limits him, like a leash would. He desperately wants to be free of it so he can haunt who he wants where he wants when he wants. The only way to break the curse is to get married.
If someone says Beetlejuice's name three times while he's out of the model, does that mean that he goes back inside the model and back inside the grave he was inside?
Angela Cooper Thank you. I guess if he's out of the model and his name is said three times, he goes back inside the grave he was set free from Adam and Barbara.
afriendofbean: yup. This is just my view or opinion but I like how he tries to stop some people from saying his name 3 times to send him back inside the grave that he was in
