Before & After: A Tiny Addition Turns A Dark & Dated House Into A Light-Filled Haven

“The house was very dark with small windows and the rooms were disconnected. It was a challenging environment for people to live in.” says Chris Lischkoff of Salt Design Group. Adding a tiny addition to the back of the house allowed him to relocate the staircase, remove interior walls and create a cohesive layout. Don’t miss the new cantilevered box window off the dining room and the clever cat room under the staircase. Step inside this peaceful retreat for a full tour!

An amazing re-do. It looks like you weren't just spending money to spend money but gave them a nice space that considered their lifestyle & personality.

I've never been a proponent of "bigger is better", so I really like their philosophy of not over building. This is a lovely family home.

Just lovely, and so many clever re-uses of living space. Nothing cookie-cutter here -- just lovely, functional space tailored to the client's wants and needs.

Great design & I love that you don’t just create space for the sake of it. It flows beautifully & every square inch makes sense ❤😊

Finally a realistic homeowner and designer who values function, usability, and aesthetics and not getting caught up in the superficial showy world. I appreciate also not having to listen to upspeak. Good work!!

This is beyond a refresh, it's a stunning re-do. The only thing I would reconsider is the placement of the hidden litter box. You don't want guests or residents possibly smelling the cat litter as soon as they walk in. It should be in the back of house or downstairs.

What a tasteful renovation! Love his philosophy about not adding space for the sake of space and making it all intentional and useful.

The entry is lovely with that wallpaper and then the rest of the house is flooded with light. I love that!

Love Chris Lischkoff's philosophy of not over building and the homeowners wanting to keep within the esthetics of the neighborhood. The TV room and office combination worked well together.

Couldn’t agree more to loving smaller homes and their practicality! It’s so much more cozy feeling instead of cavernous. I was recently invited to a party in a home that was MASSIVE! Because of its size, they filled it with so much stuff that it felt chaotic. I’m sure it could’ve been done differently and therefore much better but I still prefer an intimate space over soaring McMansions. Well done!

Lovely renovation. Particularly like the kitchen and the principal bedroom. Great family room and upstairs office. Very nice spaces. I agree with another comment that the leg posts on the island look inconsistent with the rest of the design. Also, the living room with the offset fireplace looks awkward. Perhaps it feels better when in the space. Overall, a wonderful home.

Proof that not every addition needs to make a house a mansion for it to be functional and very beautiful.

The bench behind the tub makes a glass of wine or an ipad completely inaccessible, and it takes up valuable room. That was not a clever idea. Additionally, the big end of the dining table is blocking traffic to the back door, while I would hope to not be seated at the little end either. Love the colors in the home, the children’s height chart, and the round cat door.

The windows and space are great but I would have no idea who lived here. Is this the end result? So cold and impersonal.

Is that a gas fireplace that they installed new? Does Ontario still allow that (I'm assuming this is Ontario?) B.C. I think has banned that.

It's an absolutely great design though - it feels both trendy and timeless.

Feedback for the H&H video team: the sound track for this video was overly instrumental and at times distracted from the video.

That dining table looks terrible to eat at, especially if you're at the narrow end.

Black windows have to go. This trend is overdone and not aesthetically timeless.
