In this video I compare the sound levels before and after adding insulation to my garage. I added an insulated ceiling, build a stud wall in front of the roller garage door, and in this video I also frame and insulate the internal walls in an attempt at sound proofing treatment to stop noise coming in from the nearby busy road and limit the sound of my machines for the sake of my neighbours. Plus it should be more thermally efficient - keeping the warm air inside in the winter months and the cool air inside in the summer months.

You should have placed the plastic on the inside of the frames and used some other vapour permeable material on the inside facing the stone wall. As you have done now the warm damp air inside will go through the walls and isolation and then it will condensate against the plastic that you put on the inside. Have been thinking about putting up isolation in my own workshop where I have stone walls and the above advice is what was given to me on a builders forum here in Sweden where I live.

I like your before and after comparisons. Not surprised that insulating the block walls did not reduce the noise level much. Heavy materials like concrete attenuate sound very well. Still worth insulating block walls for temperature.

Waaaaayyyy better. Great Job. I live in Phoenix AZ, we commonly get to 110 degrees (44 celcius) outside, after i insulated my metal garage door with styrofoam, the temp dropped by 12 degrees Fahrenheit. We work in the garage everyday.

Even spiders have to live somewhere. I have a "Huner" spider that lives behind my monitor and pops out every now and then. He is a good specimen and is about 50mm across. I have to keep my Tarantulas downstairs as they would be after him if they were ever to see him, another good thing about spiders is that they keep the flys down.

Spiders are the best!! I love this time of year when they come indoors. Tarantulas are beautiful, my favourite spiders are the peacock jumpers 🤗

@@paganwiccacat Peacock jumpers tend to worry some people, I am odd because I love all spiders, my mum would never let us hurt a spider and I think that rubbed off on me. I think a spiders web is beautiful and the strength of the web is fantastic considering what it is made from and the size of the spider that made it.

Thanks a million for sharing. I insulated my garage this year - just the walls, concrete floor and the metal door so far - and it has made a huge difference to the temperature in there. I've still got the roof to do, but rigid insulation, aka Kingspan, is really expensive, so I've been waiting to get a deal on some more insulation to do the flat metal roof. When I say the temperature changed, I am of course talking about the heat in the summer from the concrete walls and metal roof. Yes, if it gets really hot in the summer, you can be assured that it will be baltic in the winter! Fortunately, I was able to get my hands on some rigid insulation for upstands. Hey, it's not Kingspan, but it was free and will be perfect to finish the roof insulation before fitting plasterboard and a couple of 600 by 600 LED lights - £15 each from Ebay. Once again, thanks for sharing your experience with the garage insulation project.

That is a massive difference!! I'm in a rented apartment but it's encouraging to know how easy it can be to make such a big difference (provided you're willing to lose about 3 or 4 inches on all sides in terms of room space. Considering the improvement, I'd say it's well worth it.

That's a great result you have actually reduced the perceived noise more than your decibel readings indicate as decibel is a measure of energy I believe that every 10 decibel reduction is equal to half the perceived noise which is what matters for your neighbors and videos

Result, Keith! Interesting too... I'm planning to use 100mm Rockwool in the walls and have 50mm PIR in the floor and the same in the ceiling of the new workshop I'm building. The difference is that I'm primarily concerned keeping noise inside and preserving my neighbours' goodwill. The thermal side of things is obviously important too...! I, too, am going to be turning my attention to dust extraction and air cleaning in due course. Really helpful for me that I'm able to follow your progress with your new workshop. Thanks!! Best aye.

Great job! I can see your problem however. By having to split the 2x3's you were unable to have the wall next to the block wall be more free standing. I totally get the budget issues. None of us are rich. Unfortunately when you secured your frame by screwing into the exterior block wall, you created a vehicle for the sound to travel on, from the outside block wall, through the screws and to the inside of your plaster board/plywood wall, bringing the outside sound into your room. One solution: Using those "clips" with the rubber, to secure the studs to the block wall. Have a good one!! Carl

Good job on the insulation! For heating you might want to look into an infr-red heating panel. They are very effective in making you feel warm without you having to heat the entire space to then feel a bit warmer. My granddad has one in his workshop and it’s great! Also looking forward to seeing what projects you‘ll do next!

using "hen house" metal net to hold the rockwool works good. also always only one humidity barrier.. if you add this plastic and there is a barrier in place you are going to have a bad time with mold

Possibly aware of them and just wanted to use what you had - but frame fixings are a plug and screw designed to be hammered in for attaching wood to masonry.

With all the insulation you are doing remember to think about ventilation too. Condensation and general damp can become a real problem otherwise.

I’ve seen thin metal wire chris crossing the square with insulation to hold it in place. They use this for floors with that fiber insulation you’re using. That’ll last forever no sagging.

The paint looks SO much better, even without plastering. But I do feel a touch bad about Becks and Sam getting covered! ;-) Maybe a screen door added outside the man door will give you that air gap for blocking sound? Just a wild guess.

That's quite impressive considering the relatively small budget. Will make it a much nicer space to work - quieter, warmer and brighter. Hopefully you might get lucky and find a perfect fitting UPVC door on gumtree or somewhere. If you really want to go the whole hog, you could also add shutters to the windows. My only comment is that you might want to add some sound absorption materials if possible as the sound was a bit echoey - perhaps some nice frilly curtains!

Great results with the sound levels. I’m no expert but I thought DPM on what is effectively the cold side of an insulated panel was a bit of a no no. The warm moist air from the workshop will not be able to pass through and might condense on the inner face of the DPM, trapping moisture against the timber. Perhaps not a big deal with the workshop extraction.

@@RagnBoneBrown The vapour barrier should ideally go just under the boards to allow any moisture that gets trapped in the insulation to escape out through the exterior wall. You may get some damp and mould problems in the insulation the way you have it. To do it the way you have it, the membrane used has to be breathable type to let trapped moisture out. If I were you I would leave it a year and then take one of the boards off to check if there are any condensation problems.

To be honest I don't really have any issues with that as the road noise drowns out any sound my machines would make! Lucky in that respect. Also people don't really use their front gardens, so even in the summer it won't be an issue as everyone will be using their back gardens 👍

Given that it is not only a shop but also a studio space, have you considered using Acoustic Quieting material to dampen the harsher ranges of sounds?

You seem to have isolated the space from external noise, at least as far as videomaking goes, so well done. However that piece to camera in the insulated space sounded very 'bright', or 'toppy', which is a bit harsh on the vocals and the power tools sound will be very sharp. Hope that's useful and not taken as criticism. There's always post-production lol.

You may not think the wall insulation reduces sounds, but they do. The insulation also has the added benefit of needing less energy or fuel to heat the space in the coming months. It's a cost benefit situation. You did enough for now to make sure you can film in the space, move on to the next project like you said. Plus, I think you have bought up all the used materials locally.😂 Still worth the money you spent and will spend. I think right now the biggest area of sound penetration are the windows, but you don't have the budget for that.

I'm surprised how effective the sound insulation is, to be honest. You can still hear the cars, but they're much less obvious/intrusive. Nice work! I wonder if hanging a heavy curtain in front of the old door would help any...?

I could get a lav mic but it creates extra hassle and the shotgun mic connected to the camera does a good enough job imo

@@RagnBoneBrown An easy low-tech way would be to measure indoor and outdoor temperature difference over time. You'd need to do it before and after insulation, and to make the data useful, you'd need to use artificial heat to get the room temperature up to X degrees C in both tests, and see how long it takes to drop to outside temperature. From there (if you were keen!) you could calculate R or U values, but just knowing that it takes e.g. 2x or 3x as long to lose a given amount of heat energy, is a useful metric. Even just a subjective "it's much warmer!" would be cool :-)

i believe i’m right in thinking that the noise will still come through doors and windows even when double glazed, although from experience, going from single to double glazed does make a big difference in both sound and keeping heat in during winter. i’m presuming the door is single glazed? if so, you’ll probably find a cheap or even a free double glazed door on marketplace as I have :)

Yeah I think double glazed makes a big difference. The door and the windows are all single glazed but strangely the windows don't seem to let in as much noise as the door. I'd like to replace the door and the windows some day, but the house is more important :-)

Hi Keith. I thought you were going to leave an air gap between the frame and the wall but it looks like you’ve screwed the frame direct to wall with no gap? If that’s the case then you didn’t need anything to stop the insulation falling out? Sorry if I’ve totally misunderstood this! Will be an amazing workshop when you’re finished!

What's the effect of the sound proofing on the outside? I have a double garage that I am converting into a workshop but currently can only run table saw etc during the day. Would happily put the effort into the proofing if it means I can run the tools in the evening.

have you done anything with the window, it looks like a single pane of glass if you add some plastic to your new wall you should get a massive reduction in noise level

That was my thought also. A wood frame that just fits in the opening and wrap both sides with (semi) clear plastic. You would still get the light, and it will greatly increase the insulating for sound and temperature.

I renovated my garage Windows last year and changed glass from 2 to 4 mm and it made a huge differens in sound from the outside. They where double glased aswell.
