Good morning, Morgan's and friends! Thank you for the video, Mike! You won't regret the new shed you want to build. The mini skid will get fixed. I'm glad the issues are nothing big. That thing is very handy and a powerhouse. Have a great Sunday, everyone!!
3 things: 1- I’ve had star link for 3 months in rural western Oregon, and love it 2- owned two 6’ power rakes for our two T190 bobcat skid-steers in my landscape operation, it was my special sauce for speedy final grades and seeding prep. AMAZING! In 2009 I downsized and sold all the install equipment and went back to maintenance only… no regrets! But I miss the power rake the most. 3- spraying will always be the most effective way to eradicate weeds in a multiple interval treatment for a couple months to kill off the kids… no… not your family, but the weed seeds lurking in the soil, waiting to pop up like prairie dogs when you think you’ve fixed everything.
I have had the original Starlink since it was available as we don't have anything else available. Couldn't be happier, takes care of our entire household without issue. Will lose signal with heavy weather much like satellite TV but it comes back just as quick.
As a kid in the 50s we had a farm in northern 15:07 KY that was covered under in locust trees. As we cleaned up the farm the trees became fence posts. Part of my time spent in peeling the bark so the posts would last longer once placed in the ground. Around 1960 the price per posts we sold was fifty cents for the small posts and $1 for larger posts suitable for gate or corner posts.
I have the Gen3 Starlink and use while we live in our RV during the summer months. Some things that I have learned over our first year with it using it extensively for remote work with many hours of video calls. Make sure you have a good view of the sky, at our summer campsite there is one tree and the canopy created by that did cause some disruption but nothing a taller pole can’t fix next year. Maybe that means a small clearing at the cabin is needed 😮 The more rural the location the better, less people connecting to your local satellites the better performance you will have. It is one of the easiest systems to setup. I’ve only used it this summer but I also like the idea that I own it and can deploy it anywhere I need in the future and even in the event of bad weather at our home in central PA.
When you build your new storage shed, consider adding a second level in one of the storage bays. You could double the storage capacity with lighter items on the second level shelf.
That's not a bad idea. Could have a small winch in rafters, maybe a 3x5 or 4x5 opening using the Jackery to power it, plus it could be another blind or a place to get good photos.
I love my starlink! Allows me to live out in a rural forest, and still keep my day job. For your place in WV, make sure you have a spot with a clear wide view of the sky. That is the one challenge using starlink in a forest, trees will block its signal and make it hard to connect.
I wouldn't give up on the Vermeer yet as long as there's no major issues and the issues you have are not reoccurring. I just spent several thousand dollars on a very nice E-bike and the cover on the lock that holds the battery secure fell off. Not a big deal as I love the bike but it shouldn't have happened. Perfection in life is virtually impossible to achieve, too many variables and forces working against it. Thanks for all you and your family does, I enjoy the variety and your honesty in everything you do. Fall harvest is in full swing here in Michigan with a needed rain delay break for the next couple days.
Good morning OWTM community … I’ve never used a Starlink mini or a Power Rake … I do have a whole house generator and an APC battery back up on my internet service which holds the power until the generator kicks on and the auto transfer switches from provider power to generated power … Here’s to another exceptional day full of opportunities and happiness 😎
Starlink has been a game changer for us. It’s been our primary internet for our house for the past couple of years. Awesome service…very few outages. We now have 3 systems…one for our home, a second for our rental home, and a third with the roam plan for our RV. The fixed location plans are $120/mo and the roam is $150/mo. With the roam plan you can pause and restart service at will.
I grew up on a dairy farm in Ct. We had a couple locust posts by the river from the old pasture. There was a dirt bike trail that went by 1 of those posts. I'm 58 yrs old. That post was there before my time as cows hadn't been down there since before I was born. Last year I went home to visit and happened to find that post is still there.
I have the regular Starlink and used it with our camper. Earlier this year I bought the mini for more portable use. I reallly like both. The mini works great and I run it on a battery pack. I purchased originally for backup internet in case ours in the country goes out. I have found many uses for it. The mini now goes with me when we travel. I have used it in some wooded campground areas but you have to find a spot with some clear sky.
Locust also makes good firewood. It has more BTUs than red oak. IA Star Link mini system would be great for general use and emergency backup communications. Just look at how useful they've been down in North Carolina during the hurricane clean up.
My son has a Starlink and lives in a wooded area. He has had little luck with his as you have to have a clear view of the sky - no obstructions. Read the Starlink owners manual before you purchase would be my advice. My neighbor has one and he loves it but he has no trees around his home.
I wouldn’t lose faith in the mini skid, millions of parts made every day. Sometimes a part is defective. Nothing is perfect, I think you’ve had great luck on your other equipment. Messicks doesn’t have that huge parts and service department for nothing! lol really enjoy your channel
Starlink is great. Game changer for the hills of southern Missouri. Easy setup, no holes needed in my metal roof. That squeak might be deceptive. Bought a pickup years ago that had a knocking sound coming from the passenger door. Dealer found that the speaker harness was not tied down behind the seats. Never would have guessed that.
Locust was the preferred fence post material at my grandfather's farm in SW PA. No sawn posts, we just used the limbs, which were crooked as a dog's hind leg. So running a straight fence line was a challenge. The main reason for the locust was its resistance to rot. Sometimes he would treat the ends by soaking in a barrel of used motor oil (if I recall correctly). I don't know if his treatment helped or not. Fencing was a nonstop job. There was always fence that needed work.
I have StarLink at the house. The mini is fairly new. My StarLink isn't very big and works awesome. I pay $120 a month for unlimited in my area of Waco Texas. Enjoy your channel and you have taught me a lot. Keep up the great work and don't change a thing.
I recently changed from cellular internet to Starlink in my off grid home in the middle of the woods...I did manage to find a hole in the forest canopy so it works great...I should have switched sooner....best internet speed I've ever had anywhere...latency runs about 20 ms. I can now connect to my cameras with no issues when I'm away out in the world!! Also uploading to my own cloud server located remotely works flawlessly.
I don't have the mini but I really like the standard starlink. I have it at my farm in east tx. no issues. get about 80-100 Mbps down..30-40 up. very reliable. trees may be an issue for you so check for satellite visibility using the app before you order it ideally. I have tons of tall pine trees but I have a decent clearing and installed high on my roof which gave me clear path to the satellites. might have to put it on your roof which may or may not make the mini less desirable as opposed to the standard installation. depends on where the trees are and visibility to the satellites.
Another great video, Mike. Im glad you brought this subject up. I've been eyeballing the starlink mini. Seems a lil pricey via the monthly charges, my opinion. As for the mini skid. Get it fixed and keep it. Its a very handy, powerful machine. Anytime one buys something new, theres always a few bugs to work thru.
IMO...the mini skid seems like a great tool for moving material...skidding logs, moving buckets of dirt/stone, IBC totes, etc. But I'd take pause using it for anything that generates dust...mowing, raking, etc. There's a reason they call dust the "silent killer".
Mike, in regards to the broadleaf weeds. You have perennials which come back from the roots and annuals which come back from seed. Proper timing is the key to successful control. I would wait until the plants have come up and spray them with a broadleaf herbicide. You have warm season weeds and cool season weeds. Know the life cycle of the plants you are dealing with.
Man love that power rake. I would think a money maker for a small business venture for somebody. You could cleanup and smooth a nice size lawn and over seed in a day. With the narrow Vermeer it would easily get into the back yards through a wide passage gait. This generation of people dont like to work like the GenZ and Boomers, they are mostly an instant gratification generation and would gladly pay for this operation to have a instant nice lawn in a coupple weeks and the dont have to blister those soft little hands. BTW, if you own a landscape rake you automatically are in the Tim the Toolman Club with full growling credentials. Thanks for another great vid.
I have a large Bobcat rake. Don't go so deep with the rake. The old grass will grow back and seed the worked areas. Thatch the old grass. Great at smoothing trails. Best grass seed bed ever. Can be dusty.
- Christmas to retailers is big bucks. You mentioned Christmas stuff at Lowe’s. Hobby Lobby, Michael’s start before Labor Day. Christmas tree displays etc. But after Christmas they gear up for spring 😊
Hey Mike...I'm with you...the squeaky idlers, sounds like a bad bearing....in my industry, when we see the Display rolling through the menu like that...its usually a failed tactile key shorting out internally. I wouldn't give op on the manufacturer if they handle repairs in an honorable manner. On the other hand...it is a justification for upgrading 😂
That big clearing that you are grass seeding. I could see large building number two going up there. Your daughter and husband want to move home. You also have Levi there. Sawmilling 2x6's and sandwiching three together with alternating seams would make great posts to build something more in keeping with your large building next to the house. You mentioned that your only regret is not pouring footers. You could pour round posts with the tops slightly above grade. The advantage of syncing the posts in the ground like they did on your large building is that is creates wind sheer strength. With the round posts all you have to so is take one quarter, or a third of each wall and superimpose cross bracing on it. That way it won't rack or shear. With sistering/gluing together 2x6 posts the sky is the limit. I'd like to see one part of that building, like up on one end have two floors so your daughter and husband have a place to stay, or create a second floor apartment. The other part of the building would be great for storage, or for your kiln etc. Running electricity to it couldn't you just branch off from the connection you already have? I'm not an electrician so I am shooting from the hip on this one. After you put the 2x6 post framing up, you know, just use 1x3's, or 2x4's for joining them together and create a platform for siding. You could even mill wood siding, and then after it fully cures, or kiln dry it put batten strips in between. I'm just thinking out loud. Love this channel.
Up here in North Idaho on my piece of paradise, Starlink is the only thing I can get. We LOVE it! We only do the $120 plan and haven’t had much issue. We lose connection occasionally, but not enough to be upset. Like any satellite system, you have to have a clear shot so heavy forest could be an issue at your cabin.
Good morning Mike, you should try using your sawdust for mulching your grass seed. It works great, and no cleaning up the straw mess. The sawdust just decomposes and makes the soil better
Mike Good morning You need to try to use Penn Mulch Seed Accelerator instead of the straw. Can be applied using a broadcaster spreader, comes in 40 lb bags and best part is you don't have to pick it up after the grass grows. It is an alternative to hydroseeding, it basically is paper pellets that swell and hold the water, perfect for patches like you just did. I think it is a game changer.
Add $100 to the Starlink setup. They charge a $100 network congestion fee. That being said I have both the large and the mini starlink with the mini I set it up in my truck and I had service from Michigan to Pennsylvania and out to wyoming.
We live in rural PA about 3 hours from you. We had Brightspeed. Speeds no greater than 5-10 meg. Sad. We decided to switch to Starlink. Initial investment was $600 for the equipment. Ours is $120 per month unlimited. With that, one thing for certain, you can’t get your time back. So sitting there waiting for Brightspeed to load, took time. Starlink is super fast considering. So it was a no brainer for us and yes, well worth the investment. I vote YES, go for it!
I have had Starlink for about 3 years. Game changer for where I live. No other “high speed” available. Just make sure you have a 100% clear view of the sky. In my case it’s north. I live along a river and my property slopes down. I have 3 story house. I added an eight foot pole, on the top eave, to mount the dish. That was the only way I could have an unobstructed view north. With the mini, you won’t have that luxury.
Good luck with your Vermeer, You'll see how well they Stand By their Warranty. It certainly isn't your first Rodeo testing a New Piece of Equipment. Hopefully, The fact that you showcase a new to you piece of equipment will be to your advantage in that they will give you exceptional Customer Service..
I sure wouldn’t turn down all the locusts I could get. I love locust. It lasts years and years and ages really nice out in the weather. Also, I ordered Starlink a few months after it first became available. I’ve used it now a couple years and have nothing but good things to say about it. It works great and is extremely reliable. Not tried the mini yet though but I’m sure it works great as well.
Greetings from one owner (ctx100 ) to another owner (ctx160) I think there is a very easy solution to your problems. The squeaking noise is probably caused by one or more little stones caught between the drive and the chassis. You got a lot of gravel all around your property. Even if fixed it will happen over and over again The problem with your display is probably caused by humidity which has condensed in the vented housing. Easy to fix: just one plug and two screws. Put it inside and let it dry overnight Its worth trying
Mike the answer your looking for you already answered……..the squeak is pretty normal on tracked vehicles……the small units it is rare…… but the information monitor needs replacing!…….it may have got moisture inside……sounds crazy but these instrument gauges get this sometimes and I recommend a cover for when not in use……let the dealer look at it and replace what is needed……you may just need the gauge replaced and maybe one or two idler wheels replaced
I've had my Starlink for couple months and have seen 400+Mbps vs the Verizon DSL at 2mbps at the same monthly price. Starlink the only viable option up here south of Marienville. Love it!
Good morning mike and Melissa! Mike does your WMU sell out of doe tags every year? Ours down here has thousands of extras every season, hence the overpopulation. I think without killing everything, your weed seeds will eventually come back up. I know roundup is risky to use but may be your best option for a new successful yard.
Mike, the issues with your mini-skid seem very minor... the display is just defective. The buttons on those type of displays are notorious for sticking... which is why it cycles the menu. They will replace it and all will be good. I am with you on the squeak, it probably is an idler. Seems like a good machine and will most likely be a waste of money to switch to something else that may have similar issues. We enjoy watching the videos! Take care!
I’ve had Starlink since the end of the beta period and have been very happy, the fastest internet before hand was 25mbps but realistically we only got about 4.5mbps and upload speed was even slower it would take about 15-20hrs to upload a RU-vid video, now with Starlink it takes about 15minutes, and it’s running about 119mbps, it is not the mini though.
I could have sure used that power rake fixing my front yard after having some septic tank work done. It took 4 of us 1/2 day of some pretty hard work with a rototiller and hand rakes. Looks like you would have done a much better job in about 10 min. …..My only concern with doing a whole weedy yard without some kind of treatment is if the weeds would just grow back.
I have the 2nd gen reg starlink and it works great. You need a clear view of the sky in a NE direction. You will have trouble in the deep woods. If you could create a large clearing it may work for you.
I had Starlink when it first came out and was happy with it. The reason i dropped it was the service changed [download speed decreased] and the price went up. It turned out not to be the best bang for the buck. I can't say how well the mini would work.
I hope you build a post and beam pavillion over the cabin patio. Add some screens for bug proofing. Barter hardwoods with your building mfg. Stony ridge farmer NC found the perfect wood fired co😂oking serving and seating table. The metal top rotates luke a lazy susan. Everyone self swrvice, cooking there food. The ultimate family meal cook, serve and enjoy table/fire pit. Like the brio but massive.
When it comes to computers, it's not called "Net working", it's called "NOT working". I wouldn't let a computer glitch determine whether you keep it or not especially since you mentioned it is the stronger of the available bunch. The squeak, well that is a different subject, and I am sure the dealership will iron it out.
Really like the Mini Beast :) Maybe it can get rid of the Japanese Stiltgrass with power rake... Hope they fix the Mini Skid it is a hoss for such a small machine. ❤💯🙏
It's the same over here in the U.K. Halloween stuff & Christmas stuff for sale we also have Guy Fawkes night (fireworks & Bonfires)on November 5th. Yeh I know same day as your Elections. I'll be watching that with great interest.
Hey there Mike, I’m not sure about the stare link mini but we live on Whidbey Island Wa. The local internet was so so at best, and we have Dish network for our tv and they say that there satellite Internet service is watching at blotchy at best so when I heard about the Starlink, I checked into it and talked to a couple people that have it in my area and I ordered it and have been happy with it since my sister travels with it in her motorhome and she loves it. Have a great day, and if the Verma makes too much curries this quick, you might want to think about a different unit.
Hi Mike I have been an OWTM view forever. I can't recall, what did you do for a septic system with the building? I remember the water storage tank by no septic/sewer. Great videos. Keep em' coming!
Saw that hard boild egg pudding reel myself. Did not look tasty enough to try. Impressed that you tried and approved. I think the texture would bother me. PSA: if you have internet recipes you like, Write them down so you have them available when the internet becomes a thing of the past.😊
Fwiw Mike… i.e. locust posts, and testing. Old world tech is to dip the end of post in used motor oil (think creosote) as a further preservative for the post.
this is thanksgiving on monday up here in canada !love what you and your lovely family do down there !i watch you everyday ,retired truck driver 44 years love the beautiful kitchen too another thig have you ever considered wrapping with the tar impregnated thing you put on the post the end that goes in the ground and you heat the wrap with a torch so it sticks to the post saw thisv on april wilkersons you tube site on here
Starlink is great! Installed a month before Helene came through the big bend - 50 miles from Perry FL. Fearsome winds. Survive 100mph gusts and never lost signal (battery powered at the time)
Melissa, maybe take the ingredients into a Vitamix, and it will blend it into a purée. You said mixer and blender, not sure which you used. It will give you a great consistency.
You know Mike I was also wandering if that would not be so handy to strow the seed and run lightly over it a final pass and let the rake mix and inbed the seed to cover and protect it while it establishes itself
You won’t regret the Starlink. We typically average 200mb down and anywhere from 10-25mb up. Latency has improved every day since we got it and we now average about 27ms. We have a wired network throughout our house and we actually never use more than 30mb even though the industry tries to sell you these super high speeds. You don’t need more than 50mb.
@@davidmorse8432, we are 15 miles NE of Soddy Daisy TN. On Cumberland Plateau at about 2000 ft elevation. North Hamilton County TN. Thanks for asking.
Yes on the power rake, I owned a three point harley rake and used it in a business for ten years putting in yards on acreage. I've done what you are thinking about on old lawns, it gets the ruts out also it doesn't kill all the grass. You would have to use a per-emergent herbicide after the new grass had some cuts on it to get rid of the weed seed. I've also used roundup on old yards then used the harley rake to mix the dead grass into the top inch which makes a great seed bed.
I have had V2 2nd gen since it was available here in South Louisiana. It has worked flawlessly for us. I just bought another one for out at my shop. It has been a great option for us way out in the country.
A lot of weeds are very deep rooted, ie. dandelions. Power raking only kills off the short grasses and weeds. Herbicides applied first might kill off the deep rooted weeds. I have no clue as to what happens with the seed bank in the soil.
I have a friend of mine is an over the road trucker runs all around United States he has star link mini he absolutely says he cannot do his job without it he thinks it's the most fantastic thing he's ever had other thing I'm in Michigan and my neighbors got a crop damage permit from the DNR and they took out 35 deer three years later it looks like we didn't take out any have a fantastic day
