We're working hard in this video, combing through one last (we think?) warehouse owned by ‪@BernerBrotherAntiques‬ , who have been kind enough to invite us to pile up the bargains! We've barely gotten in the door when Jocelyn of ‪@CrazyLampLady‬ finds a great gargoyle-like face jug, so I'd better get in gear and start shopping too.
It's easy to do here! This is another barn full of shelves, boxes and piles of antiques and vintage, and I quickly snag a Blenko threaded bowl (yes, that tag says $12!) and some Wedgwood Jasperware in the desirable basalt black color. Vintage fashion jewelry, Van Briggle and Van Tellingen pottery novelties and a few surprises land in my pile, despite some unexpected competition for the biggest baubles...
Digger Drew comes just in time to find and interpret some interesting antique metal bits and bobs unearthed long ago, find a missing Murano stopper and explain why tobacco pipes grew in the 1700s! This is the kind of information that makes shopping with friends fun, there's bound to be more to learn when there's decades of accumulated knowledge between everyone in the group!
We can't seem to get out without piling up more to buy, and as our total escalates, so do our chances of having fresh stock for our upcoming Florida winter shows, and our Holiday online sales! Look for some of the surprising items here to appear in our upcoming Level 2+ Member early access eBay listing video (info under the dashed line below where it says 'Memberships'), as well as our sales starting November 30, 2023 on ‪@TheAntiqueNomadLive‬ channel.

George, Europeans first discovered tobacco in South America and Cuba, where it was grown and used by indigenous peoples there. It was imported to France and England and Spain. Due to its addictive properties its use spread widely and quickly in Europe. It was used as well by the indigenous tribes in North America, but more as a medicinal herb or in religious ceremonies. The Virginia colony began growing tobacco as a commercial crop very early. Tobacco cultivation is extremely labor intensive, this led to the increasing use of slave labor, which replaced the prior practice of indentured servitude to provide farm labor. So tobacco use helped set the United States on the path to the Civil War. Tobacco in the colonies was mainly an export crop. It was subject to various tariffs and would have been very expensive. It was used almost as currency and could be legal tender to pay debts and taxes. It would have been used sparingly by ordinary citizens in the early colonies, until its cost decreased with independence and unfortunately the increased use of cheap slave labor.

The two little black pieces at 12:00 are burnished not glazed. You can find how to videos on RU-vid for this process. When you see other colors like red or cream that is done by applying a thin layer of watered down clay called slip. Carving into the pieces reveals the unburnished areas that don't get the burnished shine. I enjoy your videos and learn so much!

Good evening, George! Those statues outdoors there are something I could get into really quickly. It was a pity that vase had been drilled. That's a big "no" for me, too, along with old kerosene lamps that have been drilled. I liked the one next to it, though. Grape & Cable isn't one of my favourite patterns. Of all the 61 beverage sets I have, there isn't a G&C in the lot. That Austrian porcelain piece was really pretty. That is a place to get there early and leave late...too much fun things to browse. Thanks for the take-along!
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 8 месяцев назад
I want concrete in the yard too! The vase made me sad, Consolidated and Phoenix are always good sellers and I want things to be preserved. I cringed when I saw the missing chunk in the punch bowl, I love that pattern in that context because it's so big and well detailed! We used to sell those regularly for $400 when I first started in this. I'm shocked to hear you don't have a G&C beverage set, we'll have to work on #62 for you! Lol. I would've enjoyed looking longer, but I felt pretty happy with what I found and for only $135, it was a $500 pick in a half hour...much better than thrifting at Goodwill!
@CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS
@CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS 8 месяцев назад
@@TheAntiqueNomad Yeah, it was sad the vase had been drilled. A beautiful piece that, to me, had been ruined. I can do without a G&C beverage set 😂 That's never been a favourite pattern of mine. Mom had a complete punch set in G&C, but she sold it when we combined houses. I do have two of Northwood's Grape and Gothic Arches sets - one in amethyst and one in pumpkin marigold. That's a pattern I really do like. That was immensely better than any Greedwill, for sure!

I love watching your videos as you have a great sense of humor and are very knowledgeable. However, I must point out that the two Wedgwood black and white pieces you picked out are not Wedgwood Black Basalt, which is a hard, dense, fine-grained stoneware, which Josiah used for portrait medallions, seals, vases and urns, busts, tea ware, and other items. The busts and figures were made to emulate old bronze statues. Basalt has been produced continuously since its introduction in 1768. The two pieces are Wedgwood Black and White Jasperware, which is a totally different stoneware, which was invented by Josiah Wedgwood in 1774. I was surprised you passed on picking up the Wedgwood Primrose and White vase, which is highly collectible as it was only produced for a short period of time in the 1970's.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 8 месяцев назад
Thank you for clarifying, so many people have just called it black basalt that I foolishly never investigated that! I will have to make a correction. I didn't pick up the Primrose and White because it had a stain you couldn't see from the camera angle and I wasn't sure it would come out, perhaps I should've tried
@phillymouse2033
@phillymouse2033 8 месяцев назад
@@TheAntiqueNomad I am glad to be of some small assistance. I have been collecting Wedgwood for over 50 years and have many reference books. If you ever have any questions in the future about Wedgwood, please let me know and I will do my best to answer them. I can understand passing up on the Primrose and White piece because of a stain. Depending on where the stain was and how big, sometimes it can be removed with gentle dish detergent such as Dawn and water.

We'll make Laural into a joolie yet! I just found a beautiful Mexican blackware jug/vase in a charity thrift. I loved the LIRR bar car. Used to go home from acting school at about 2 pm. Sat in the bar car and had a rum and coke every day. Went home, took a shower and changed and went back into the city to the theatre and for cocktails. Those were the days - I could make a 7 am train in the morning and then party the night away and get up the next morning. Now sometimes I sit and watch the clock waiting for midnight so I could go to bed! 17 and 70 just ain't the same.
