I never suspected that Ethan Hawke was such a brilliant ACTOR! In all three films he gave an overwhelming, unforgettable performance - not a single word, look or gesture of his went artificial - he was totally believable! Really impressive and GREAT!
What's harder: delivering 15 minutes of lines without a single cut, or answering the same goddamn question in 400 interviews as if it was the first time you've heart it?
As a huge fan of the trilogy, I thought her questions are very interesting and responding directly to what Delpy, Hawke and Linklater are saying. Really dug this interview!
@@QualityFootwear As a huge fan of the trilogy myself, I would likely love u. Loving these movies means you're likely an awesome person, imho. A person's favourite art can speaks volumes about the soul behind the eyes, for lack of an appropriate sensible, secular phrase. May the wind be at your back, my friend.
I treasure these films. The writing, acting and maturity of the subject matter is so real and cathartic for me. I love the way their innate love always returns to their playful banter. It's brilliant and truly engaging. I think that it's the best portrayal of relationships and how they change but their is always the heart of the couple in focus; as it should be..
Before Midnight is a triumph. Beautiful themes and the most realistic portrayal of a relationship ever put on screen. These three create real art with the "Before" series and I look forward to growing old alongside Jessie & Celine.
I'm 39 years old from Brazil. I really like Ethan's work. I first watched "Explorers" and since then he's a reference of great work. I hope there will be another one in 2022. Maybe located in a Literary event In Salzburg, Austria. Like a come back to Austria - and a quick visit to Viena, to some of the places of the first movie and new Filosofia about life and the ways of life. But they back to Salzburg again. And no children during the movie. Just at the end of a meeting at a restaurant.
It's just crazy how time just jumps from the 90s to 2013 of this interview and now it's almost 2021! omg we are all gonna die soon! Love this 3 movies btw :) they are the perfect casts.
I really love this trilogy. Each has its own charm, depth and creative surprises. Lately, I've gotten into Before Midnight again. It's a masterpiece. Anyone who's ever been in a complicated relationship will understand how painfully real their actions are. I loved how it ended with them both surrendering again to love. But I wanted it to keep going. I needed another hour of watching these two stunning actors. They're so good, they become the characters and the audience stops thinking of them as Ethan and Julie. They ARE Jesse and Celine. I really hope there's another film. AND IT'S TIME!!!! It's almost 2021.
I recently rented 'Before Midnight' to watch and I LOVE the film (I LOVE all three like three of my children and I refuse to pick a favourite child)! Thanks so much for conducting the interview and asking so many good questions (as seen by the way they answer your questions) which show you've done a good job in researching/planning what to ask. Keep up the good work!
The synopses for these three films on my internet carrier referred to them as, ‘Chick flicks.’ Well I am definitely not a ‘chick’, and I absolutely loved all three. Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke have a perfect chemistry together and I don’t believe the acting could have been better. Bravo, Mr. Linklater!
Max Ophuls was well known for doing long takes back in the 1940s. His films such as La Ronde and The Earrings of Madame de.... are mindblowing examples--well worth checking out.
18:28 Thanks for asking about the 12-year movie project. First time I heard about it. Fascinating stuff. You may have heard of the ground breaking UK documentary 'Up Series' where the filmmaker re-visit the subjects every 7 years. The first one was 7 Up, the latest one was 56 Up where the 7 years old children are now 56 years old. I bring that series up because Richard & Ethan's films sound like a drama version of a yearly update, amazing stuff.
There is a great connection between them! I've been folloqing those movies since I was a teenager in 1995, now I'm in my 30's and I finally gonna see how this is gonna end up! I'm very excited about it! :)
Yeah, I got recommended this movie, I watched it the first time sober I thought it's a good movie need to watch it once more to better understand it, then I watched it a second time so high I was tripping my balls off and I thought it is genius... I'm not learned enough to really appreciate the acting and the technical bits of the movie, but the dialogues, the story itself and the characters had such and impression on me the second time I won't even start to elaborate on that... It's kind of awkward, but I even cried a little bit the second time at the end... The philosophical aspects of this movie are really-really deep as far as I regard; needless to say, this became my new favorite... Kind of funny, but if it never got recommended, I probalby would have never watched this movie.... - Thanks, Alain de Botton :)
I was reading an article about these films on The Guardian and those readers are a bunch of tasteless jerks, the person who wrote the article said 'Midnight' was overrated and her readers repeated this belief in the comment section saying these 3 films were the worst, totally pretentious, overly dramatic, etc. It was like they were discussing totally different films!
The funny thing is that, the wholesome fun that Ethan is as character, he got in person (interviews, at least), and her mean personality in the films got into the interviews too... I don't want to offend her, but... eh...
Top 10 Ethan Hawke Performances: 1. First Reformed 2. Before Sunset 3. Before Midnight 4. Before Sunrise 5. Training Day 6. Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead 7. Boyhood 8. Gattaca 9. Lord of War 10. Reality Bites
one of the best scenes in the movie was jesse and celine locking hands, shading away there presence from the table talk of "practicule love" being that u know youll break up, that soulmate are fairy tales
That's a very weak criticism. Plenty of quality movies feel more theatrical than cinematic, and this movie may be lean and low-key, but it still has cinematic touches. I do have an education in film BTW. Something not being cinematic isn't a flaw. It's a stylistic approach.
After Midnight, seen this evening, was very interesting, and I loved the long walk from the ruins to hotel - Once in the Hotel I thought the argument lost some of the 'individuality' of the characters but the plusses def more than the minuses. If You think it was the 'worst film ever made' I suspect you should stick to blockbusters. THIS INTERVIEW film, why are the two guys talking over Julie all the time! Celine would NEVER have put up with that.
Because that’s the way adults talk. Start at 7:50 and count how many times Julie interrupts Ethan. When you get older, you may see that your feminist indoctrination has made you very lonely and unfulfilled. Hopefully, you’ll learn along the way that life is too complex to cram through a lens of perception fashioned by frustrated academics.
Plenty of films have been made by people that have an "education in film", and every second of the film is proof of the directors brilliance on the subject of film. Yet so many of these films drive people fleeing out of theatres, and keep them away in masses, why is that do you think?
Did you ignore my question, or did you not understand it? If you were looking for wizards or vampires or gratuitous violence you could have been more selective about which theatre you wandered into, maybe? Also, they have these nice things these days called movie recaps, spend about 30 seconds going through that, and you will encounter fewer surprises, really. Anyway, best of luck to you, life will make more sense one day when you reach adulthood
'Before Sunrise' was maybe the best chick ( girl movie) I've ever seen. And I'm a straight white USA male. Loved it. The only competition it has would be ' Where The Boys Are' from the 1960s. Totally different, but just as original..
If you can give a bad review of a movie, why can't I give a bad review of your review? lol I'm not upset, it's just a shame you don't feel the natural chemistry between the characters, note the clever metaphorical nature of the setting, or the honesty and intelligence of the script. 156 of 159 film critics give it positive reviews via Rotten Tomatoes so I'm not fussed. And boasting to others about your screen writing education, and thus your superior knowledge of film making, is a bit sad.
So you believe in order for a movie to have artistic merit it needs to have well know celebrities? this movie would have been better, in your mind, if say the two main characters were portrayed by miley cyrus and justin bieber, or brad pitt and someone, correct? clearly you have an emotional stake in claiming this movie is bad (Ethan Hawke attack). It is very hard for me to converse with hyper-emotional adolescents - you are dismissed
When I saw Before Sunset I felt like I would give a small fortune to have Celine as girlfriend. By the 3rd film I felt that I would give a small fortune to get out of a poisonous relationship like that. If the 3rd film had gone in any other direction it would not have been believable. The 3rd film was well made and written but it certainly was not enjoyable to watch.
This is the most depressing movie I've ever seen. Can only have been written for spite and bitterness. The first two Before movies were great and then this one.
it's weak to you only because you dont like my criticism. your liking or disliking what i have to say doesnt change the facts. any play that tries to be a film on stage will be a weak play. the same is true of a film that is written as a play. where were you educated in film? you weren't. i write screenplays. do you?
Just bcos it doesn't fit d textbook doesn't mean it's bad. So tired of all d pedantic, conformist posers who r in fact not half as talented, intelligent or experienced as the makers of this film. It grapes d audience, intrigues emotions & provokes thoughts without resorting to violence or any other formulaic cliché. SORRY 4 THE DISAPPOINTMENT u close-minded haters. U can stuff urselves with as much hollywood pipeline/fast-food films as u like. But worst film ever?Don't make a foolout of urselves
Both Ethan and Julie grew old bad... but Julie changed so much. All her facial expressions changed from light, sweet and mysterious to bitter, grumpy and unpleasant to watch. Linklater looks mostly the same, tho.
This movie is a complete turd. Just because know one understands you does not make you an artist. If I wanted to watch two people who hate each other argue for two hours, I would go visit my parents.
talk to me when you get an education in film and maybe youll understand why this film isnt even technically written as a film, but a play, which is the main reason it's very weak.
