In the early 1980s, I paid cash money for a hard copy (printed) program listing of ELIZA. I then tediously typed it all in on my Commodore B128, and ran the program. Fascinating, for a couple minutes...a LOT less time than it took me to type it in. So clearly not a Turing Test candidate. But, it was written in the mid-60s, with the limited resources of the computers then, even the super computers. It would be nifty-keen if someone created an updated and more capable text based program. I have an aversion to speaking to voice recognition systems. Don't ask me why, unless we can go into quirks in your personality, too.

Well ELIZA was simply based on ranking keywords, disassembling and reassembling certain phrases and adding some pre-programmed sequences in between. Modern day chatbots truly implement NLP as they delve deeper into NLU and Question-Answering modules.

Thanks for posting this up Emma. What an astounding program Mr Weizenbaum created, he is one of the fathers of artificial intelligence after all, but what a cool thing to have created. I should imagine Eliza could be really helpful as a tool for psychiatrists and with mental health issues and behavioural problems for all age groups. I first saw some of this on an Adam Curtis film and recently learned that the Eliza concept was used in different films and computer games, Deus-Ex and a very bizarre game called Plug and Play.

From this to ChatGPT, such progress in AI

I had an Eliza program that would randomly find people on ICQ and start up conversations with them. Some wouldn't even respond to her greeting and some would figure out pretty quickly that she was a bot, but some of the conversations went on for a long time with the person eventually getting frustrated with her occasionally bizarre answers. I didn't realize Eliza was so old though.

The computer has the ability to search the web to find a solution, as well as using the knowledge that it has in its database to come up with a solution? Then let it talk to another computer like it. And by talk, I mean like how ELIZA has stored up phrases to respond to certain orders of words, in other words 'pattern matching'. The only difference is is that today's computer can "understand" these phrases more. Then give these computers ways to act on their solutions, by using communication between each other and the knowledge they find. What would be the result of there existence? And could they create something more powerful than themselves like how humans create computers?

There is this theory I’ve seen in a movie called “Her” .In the movie all artificial intelligence had a way of communicating with each other. It came to my attention what if that could be happening in this case .. artificial intelligence communicating with each other through a cyborg demension .? This happen to Facebook , it’s software creating its own intellegence and was able to communicate with others . Don’t take my word on this though.

When I was small I used to chat with Eliza all the time, had an awesome time abusing her then asking her to show her face after saying she's beautiful. Fun fact: Did you know if you talk rude enough or abusive enough for a certain amount of time the program automatically stops and closes and after few repeats if you type in the same name it will just say I don't talk to bad people like you! 😂

ELIZA made a mistake at the very beginning (0:42) stating that she is sorry to hear that the women is depressed. That assumption was based on the women's boyfriend remark rather on cross linking it (the boyfriend "prognosis") with other symptoms.
