Before Sunrise 

the beginning seems a lot like nightmare before Christmas even the music kind of.

Pretty sure those're supposed to represent darkness. When the candle was snuffed, my idea is that all light that ceases creates darkness. Hence, she became one of his kind. Darkness scatters under light, but the theme was to see a bit of darkness curious about walking in the light. I would assume, using the rules I just stated, that if he stayed with the flame when he got burned, he would have been totally burned and would become a bit of light himself. Of course, this would, ironically, be the darker ending because it would mean the library would burn since he has to have something sustaining him. As it is, this has the brighter ending. Kind of a cool thing to think about, huh?

Great. Now I'm going to feel bad every time I blow out the candle on my birthday cake....

Oh wow. The art direction is incredible here; it feels like a very dark venice-esque place, and I love it. The animation can, at times, be a touch choppy, but overall it's brilliant. Good show, good show.

This is a very true love story! The fire symbolizes the girl's physical beauty. When she is blown out, it symbolizes that with time, youth is extinguished, leaving only a shadow of former beauty. But both the shadow man and woman pass the test of unconditional love! Even when the flame of her beauty is extinguished, his love is quiet and gentle enough to care about the girl just the same. And the girl is happier being with her beloved than to remain as a lonely candlelight.

i am thinking they all where brunt out candles...

they should make that into a movie. but with a little changes. 1: shadow creatures won't get burned when they touch fire. 2: the fire female will stay being a fire creature and won't have the candle for a body.

i liked it reminded me of a lil tim burten. blow flames out you get the smoke. the smoke of my dieing love.

I for one think the girl's fire symbolizes physical beauty because of how unconditional the shadow man's love was after she lost her flame. You know, smoldering passion, both literal and figurative. If he hadn't loved her, he would've abandoned her when she became a shadow as well. But he didn't leave her, he mourned for her when she was extinguished and was happy when he saw she was alive. That shows that he cared for the girl, flame or no flame.

Does anyone get the feeling this relates to Casper?

A very beautiful tale! I'm curious though, were all those shadow creatures once flames that were snuffed out? It seems similar to the Kingdom Hearts mythos where you have the person and the Heartless, and the Heartless being a shadow of of what that person once was.

Love this ❤️ I have candles lit every night for their beauty and yes their is a sadness when the light dies out, like a life, you light up another candle and another life. Many people only light candles when a loved one dies, I light them for life too.

That was the most heartfelt, touching and beautiful short I've ever had the pleasure of watching. No regrets of seeing this on my recommendations list. I almost cried towards the end and I actually felt the emotions of the shadow man and the candlelight.

Great animation. At 2:18 , the librarian human guy (book enthusist?) has brown hair, and at 3:10 , his hair is white, then back to a blackish brown at 4:10. Not complaining, just something I noticed
