It is, I'm not kidding, nothing short of a miracle that Brandon Lee even got LOOKED at for The Crow after this.

This movie is just nuts. The director was a stuntman/stunt coordinator, and the 2 writers never worked on anything else, before or after this...

Namibia was occupied by South Africa at the time, and South Africa was fighting in the Angolan civil war (bordering Namibia in the north), opposing the angolan MPLA-faction which was supported by the USSR and Cuba. I think that explains the german sounding accents (Afrikaan, a dutch-related language) and the many different uniforms ("soviet", "cuban" etc.), as well as the mentions of Cuba.

A giant nod to the director. You have to be a special kind of hack to make Brandon freakin' Lee seem completely devoid of charisma, never fought a day in his life, or act like it's he's never seen a camera before.

This film is why Brandon Lee did "The Crow". To make up for stuff like this, he wanted to play a character who is brutally killed, struck by lightning AND run through with a sword.

That was like one of those "out of context" compilations as a whole movie. That "Cuban" soldier not knowing his sergeant was a woman was a great bad writing twist.

The movie was shot in Namibia in South-Western Africa. The first part was mostly filmed in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund (old German colonial town) and the rest in the interior of the country.

Not only did the villain put his loaded gun up on the wall, but then once they started fighting for what seemed like no reason, they immediately left the weapon room, in which every wall was covered in weapons, without taking a single weapon, and continued to fight with their bare fists up onto the roof. This whole thing was baffling in ways that I don't think any amount of dialog, editing or sobriety could fix. I feel like a documentary needed to be made about the making of this mess, but nobody cared enough to make it. Congo actually used a giant diamond to make a huge laser weapon at the end of the movie. It even seemed pretty cool when I was a kid.

Fun fact; this movie is in the public domain. It is thus easily viewable on youtube and will be for as long as youtube exists. Now that you've done this, you can finally do Maradonia. There really were Cuban and Russian troops in Africa around this time, but the movie is rather conspicuously ignoring the _reason_ they were there, which was that communist nations were opposed to apartheid. Less explicable are the germans and the apparent existence of a land bridge of some kind between Cuba and Africa. 6:25 o hai legally distinct G Gordon Liddy 8:55 Alas, he _is_ a mercenary; he's not a CIA agent, the CIA hired him for his "expertise" (the more obvious reason would be so they could say, truthfully, that there are no CIA agents involved, except they throw that out the window with the whole fake daughter subplot.) The title is also technically correct despite the lack of lasers, as the _mission_ is to stop a _laser_ from being used in a weapon.

Brandon Lee's wedding was supposed to take place right after The Crow finished shooting. His groomsmen were going to be best man Miguel Ferrer (excellent character actor and lead dick in Robocop), Chad Stahelski (Lee's stunt double at the time and now superb director who has directed all four John Wick movies), Eric Norris (Chuck's son) and George Clooney.

Okay, for a lil background. South African Border War, also known as the Namibian War of Independence. South West Africa, or Namibia, has a large German set of descendants (previous German Colony). South Africa took over the territory during World War 1 on behalf of the Crown. Long story short, they didn't give it back, and during the border War between South Africa and Angola (yes, I know I didn't mention them before, but they are there) The Cubans, backed by the Soviets joined the war against South Africa to help fight on the side of Angola and for Namibian independence... and to summaries... melting pot of countries in Namibia. How any of that fits into this movie... no bloody idea.

Had to look up the composer because it reminded me of bad Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)... found it was composed by David Knopfler (Mark's less talented brother).

I think movies like this get a pass because everyone in it gave it their best shot. They were terrible at it, but there was nobody there who didn't give a shit.
