I'll share my experience with you all, and this video put it all in much needed perspective... I've been smoking a tobacco pipe for a little more than 3 months, after the influence of both my granfathers, and recently a colleague of mine wich has retired a few days ago. My first pipe, a Joyodelf, smoked it once or thice a day for a couple of weeks, just to get the taste of it... In the meantime I've started to follow some IRL advices, and wathing excellent channels here on YT such this one. In the end, i realized I needed a second pipe ( and my first chinese one might have been flawed from the start). Bought a Savinelli 106, (here in Italy they are relatively "Cheap"). The difference has immediately immense, expecially after i've learned how to pack and actually smoke a pipe, and now I regret the fact that I could have bought 2 corn cob Missoury for one joyodelf at italians prices. I'll save money going forward in this hobby to be spent in some good reliable products, but I'll shure keep my first pipe on a shelf, and replace it for now, with a missoury. Good evening everyone,

Agree. Corn Cobb pips to start with, then hit the refurbished pips. Then start buying the ones you really want. As you grow with the hobby so will your taste in pipes.

I bought my first pipe on Amazon- it was Joyoldelf made of pear wood. After just a few bowls the pipe ended up with a crack at the bottom of the bowl- did not smoke it hot or put it apart when warm. It is still useable though. If only I knew better at the time, I`d go straight to Missouri Pride Corn Cob Pipe and save some money and grievances. With the extra cash, I`d buy myself a tin of high-quality tobacco, a cheap dollar store lighter, a tamper, and some pipe cleaners. I could have it all for about 30 dollars and it would have been a high-quality experience. By the way, corncob will smoke dry and will naturally add some sweetness to the blend (after all, it is made of corn) when new which is likely going to improve the experience for a novice piper. If only we knew better at the start... 😊

I agree with you. I have a lot of briar of various values. But, I smoke more cobs than any briar. I'd rather have quality tobacco than an expensive pipe. Cobs are excellent smoke transport devices. They smoke great, are low cost, are easy to replace, and are available in many shapes and sizes. I'm in my late 60s and back before I was old enough to legally smoke I used to make cob pipes, on the sly away from my mom's eyes.

Guilty, jumped at a joyoldelf when I looked to get into the hobby last month due to naivety. Now, it has worked but with no metric I cannot say how well. Using your experience as a metric I have paid and am picking up a new Peterson pipe this weekend. Lesson Learnt. Keep up the good work.

I saw these. For the same reasons i chose a hard "no". I'll pick one up this weekend at my local tobacconist. He has some good but inexpensive pipes. I hope I enjoy pipes. I"m done with cigarettes. I started rolling my own with pipe tobacco... its nice. I will start getting estate pipes if i continue. Ebay has tons. Some need a refurb and i've seen sites showing how to fix easy issues (bite marks ect.). I would love to use a pipe that was well loved in memory of its last owner as a respect.

Good video Wilson! I know it's not easy to put out a "negative" video of sorts like this one, but I think it will be really helpful for newcomers. My recommendation for a first briar at low-cost would be Rossi. It's more than I was willing to spend at first, but it would be a great investment.

I always recommend getting two identical pipes. This can not only give you a small rotation for resting and the option to have one dedicated each to aromatics/English, but it also gives you consistency. Consistency of pipe and blends can give you the repetitions you need to become competent and it also makes it easier to see when you’re doing something suboptimal. You can more easily see improvement this way as well. That being said, you can get two dr grabows for the price of one savinelli/Peterson or two Rossi pipes for the price of a more intricate savinelli/Peterson. Both these brands are great entry options to get in the game without the extra stress of fearing your going to ruin a $100+ pipe while still getting quality.

I'm a newbie, and I've been happily puffing on Missouri meerschaum corncob pipes, they seem to smoke just fine. I just splurged on a Savinelli churchwarden, so you can see the direction I'm headed in. Joyoldelf will probably be a pass for me. Thanks and Happy New Year!

I saw another pipe smokers review of joyoldelf pipe and the one he received was plastic . I would never buy this brand. I have recently started smoking a pipe. And my first pipe was bought from Amazon . It is a scotte pipe kit. It is of decent quality to start. Can't wait to get a savinelli or a Peterson.

My first pipe was a joyodelf...it wasn't great but I did the job until I could find a corn cob pipe. I've now inherited my father's pipes so I've shelved the joyodelf completely. Just like to add, the material the pipe looks to be made out of again as you said is unknown, it appears to be a man made wood if anything...

I noticed after I made the video that one of the cheaper Joyoldolf pipes available is truly made of cork wood. As expected.

I have 8-9 pipes and I have not paid more than $40. Restored estates of drugstore pipes of yesteryear are a good buy in the 30-40 range. I've bought an NOS estate under $40. I bought a Ropp at Smoking Pipes during the Holiday Sale time. I also picked up two old stock unfinished pipes that I put an hour or two of work in finishing the sanding and polishing by hand. Nothing fancy, but with those and a couple of cobs, I have a fleet of decent smoking pipes that I can beat up and use without worry. There's no need to buy an inferior quality product because good pipes are not hard to find if you aren't picky.

Thanks for this helpful Video! Ive bought a Joyoldelf as my first pipe before watching this. It is made of cherry wood, so no bruyere but still an ok choice in my opinion. With knowing the information of this video I would rather choose a corn cob next time. Nevertheless how long did it take you to break in your Joyoldelf? I have smoked it five times but still feel the pipe does not give the aroma I expected from pipe smoking. Now I am quite confused on whether I dislike the taste of pipe smoke overall or do I just need to get settled and break in the pipe properly.

I bought a churchwarden pipe on Amazon because I didn’t know any better. I didn’t want to pay a lot for a hobby I might not enjoy. It was a Joyodelf, but I didn’t know that until I looked at the accessories. They were all labeled with that company’s name. I’ve smoked it twice and I can’t say it smoked very well because I was still new to this. Once I purchased a quality pipe, it was no contest. The feel, the look, and the use of the quality pipe was far superior and I actually made huge strides. If you want a quality vehicle, you buy from Japan and Germany (not all German cars, though). No one in their right mind would buy a Chinese-made car and expect superior quality. That Joyodelf pipe is essentially a Walmart product. No, thanks.

actually price is not a parameter not all piper are greedy , some piper are selling their names old is not always good , if you have concerns about your health just don't smoke at all, you are making it sound like cheap product are bad i think people like you are the reason why things are becoming more expensive real pipe parameters are the wood quality, the craftsmanship and the tobacco itself ,i think that the joyoldelf has an ok craftsmanship for the price it is a great pipe for beginners and occasional pipe smokers.

My first pipe kit was from Joyoldelf. I loved it at first. Very nice design, was comfortable and fun to smoke. And for the fair price, I also received a good amount of accessories along with it. The problem began about a month and a half later, when the pipe started to show a small split/crack at the top section where the shank meets the bowl at the curve. It was still very smokable for a while and did just that for another couple of months afterward, but then quit pipe smoking for about 2 years. Although the crack got increasingly longer, the pipe never cracked, but eventually just threw it out when I quit. A few months ago I got back to pipe smoking and I am enjoying it very much. I'm more careful as to what brands of pipes I purchase now. I enjoy your videos and commentary very much and have learned quite a bit. I am in the process of making my first video soon on my new channel: www.youtube.com/@thesuburbanpiper346
