Update: as of 4/21/22 the 6600/6600 XT/6800/6800 XT/6900 XTs are flashable bringing newer and better GPU options to the 4,1 / 5,1 Mac Pros. It requires a computer that is compatible with the GPU to flash.

---------------------------------------------------
We are in the era of OpenCore, with the classic Mac Pros being able to post macOS 11.3! Does this mean you can run the Radeon RX 6800 / RX 6800 XT or RX 6900 XT? Well... probably not. I decided to make a less polished quick turn episode just to get the latest info out there. I wanted to make sure any classic Mac Pro users out there aren't a click away from dropping $1500 on a GPU that may never work in the classic Mac Pro since this info is still pretty fresh. It seems that the RX 6800 Pros are feasibly classic Mac Pro compatible, although unlikely due to their ROM.

Apple no longer supports the Mac Pros, but as you've probably heard by now, OpenCore lets you run the latest OS and enables other things like Bootscreens on unsupported GPUs. Go to the Definitive Mac Pro Upgrade below for more info.
GPUs get too big today, even for the mighty 2019 Mac Pro, so you need to buy carefully. The reference AMD RX Radeons fit in the 2019, but others do not.

Yeah, I kept my old Mac Pro 3,1 and I want to do a video about moving it up to Monterey but $150 GPU just so I can run Monterey on my 13 year old computer is a total waste of money. I haven't upgraded my 2019's GPU since I just can't bring myself to pay $1600 for a GPU that's supposed to cost $550. If it were normal times I'd be able to pick up a RX 560 for like $40 and that's cheap enough that it'd be fun to try. I don't make money doing any of this.

Hello, I added an AMD 6950xt to my 7,1 Mac Pro, tried for days to spoof if but it didn't worked out, Only real solution was to flash it with the 6900XT ROM, now it works as an officially supported product keeping the marginal performance gains above the 6900xt. I appreciate your work and I comment this here so maybe the information is out there! Stay cool man!

Hi Greg, I'm about to buy a RX 6900 XT eGPU for my 7.1 Mac Pro with HDMI ports. I also have a native Radeon 580X. My screen is an Apple LED Cinema Display with a MiniDisplay Port which is plugged to the MP with a MiniDisplayPort/USB-C adapter (the advantage of the MPX module) How should i plug the new RX 6900 XT gpu ? Should I buy a MiniDisplay Port/HDMI adapter so that the RX 6900 becomes the main GPU ? (I won't be able to use the MiniDisplayPort/USB-C adapter because it's not a MPX module...) Could I have benefits to keep both of the GPUs ? ( I usually run FinalCut and After Effects) Thanks for the help !
@dmug
@dmug 2 года назад
I'd plug directly into the GPU as it'll use that GPU for display acceleration. Adobe software can get confused by multiple GPUs but usually you can assign it to the correct GPU. Really the only app that seemed to be confused by multiple GPUs was Adobe Photoshop and this was 3 years ago so I assume things are better. Also, you'd get a lot more of the performance gains installing the card internally over using it as an eGPU. Some applications are like Final Cut Pro and Da Vinci Resolve. I'm not much of an Adobe guy anymore, I'm aware that AE is able to use multiple GPUs on Windows, although the gains are somewhat minimal. It really depends on the app but I'd recommend leaving both in just as the there are some apps that'd get a small bump from more than one GPU for certain tasks. barefeats.com/mac-pro-2019-four-gpus.html

So far, nada. It's extremely unlikely unless a ROM hack happens from someone like MacVidCards. I didn't think Thunderbolt 3 was feasible but here was are. The reason why I think it won't happen is price. If things were normal, the newly supported (in macOS 12.1) 6600 XT would be a nice buy and therefore a lot more motivation for someone to hack the ROM. At $650 on ebay? That's not a great buy. Perhaps in the future we may see support and when we do, I'll post a video about it.

All depends on what you have and what you need out of a computer. The 6 core boxes can be had often for really cheap like $250 and the x5680 CPUs are like $15. If you get your hands on a RX 570 or 580, it’s 4K capable and you can play modern pc games at 1080p. Great for audio

any chance you can confirm that we can use 6900 XT inside eGPUs via TB3 on Intel mac minis from 2018
@dmug
@dmug 2 года назад
Not my usual area of expertise as I’ve never used an egpu but Sonnet makes an egpu case pre-bundled with the 6900 xt targeted at the Mac mini. You’d just need to run Big Sur 11.4 or later. I’d just check egpu.Io but I’m pretty certain you can.
@erikjonsson6594

Would you say that a Rx 6800 XT would work fine as a egpu setup for 27 inch imac 2019 or are there obstacles with drivers etc?
@dmug
@dmug 2 года назад
It should work fine but only for the iMac Pro, I'd search something like eGPU.io to see results. There was some experiments with the Mac Pro Thunderbolt 3 mods and I can't remember how they ended but I'm guessing the 6800 XT's firmware is a no-go even via eGPU for the cMP even if eGPUs work. A General-but-not-terribly-accurate-rule, expect about 80% of the performance as internal. GPUs do not require the bandwidth most people assume but 5 GB/s for Thunderbolt 3 of course isn't ideal as PCIe 2.0 16x slots are 8 GB/s and PCIe 3.0 slots 16 GB/s. You'd need to find one that fits an eGPU enclosure or rather a eGPU enclosure that's large enough and doesn't have mac issues. I'm not an eGPU expert by any means as all I know is second hand, combing eGPU.io from time-to-time.

@@dmug Thank you so much for the quick reply! Yea i will definitely look into it, i´ve seen many people using a Razer Core X setup, but wondered how much performance you would actually get from the external Gpu. Always thought that it was 40gb/s with thunderbolt 3 but guess thats not the case with Gpu´s.
@dmug
@dmug 2 года назад
@@erikjonsson6594 that’s the difference between gbps and GBps, gigabits and gigabytes. Thunderbolt 3 is 40 gbps (bits) which we divide by 8 to convert to bytes gives us 5 GBps or 5 GB/s. Personally, I think in bytes. Networking hardware is almost always expressed in bits and so are internet connections, like 100 mbps = 12.5 MB/s.

Looking for some support; I’ve got a Mac Pro 2,1. I had been using VMware from inside macOS 10.7.5 to run Linux Mint, and it’s snappy, but because I don’t use macOS, I decided I wanted to just install Linux to the tin, get rid of the hypervisor. The problem is that I just can’t get any Linux installation to bite. Of course I know the 2,1 has the 32bit efi. So I’ve tried working with the ISO’s from Matt Gadient but I’m still not getting anywhere. I’ve tried USB drives - no success at all, can’t see it at the boot options screen Tried DVD burns (dvd+r) - I can get the image to appear in the boot options screen (shows as windows) but when I click it, the disc spins up and the boot screen flashes (Apple logo, stop sign, folder with ?), and keep repeating this, it never seems to go anywhere, additionally, I think the keyboard locks up as pressing things like caps lock doesn’t show any response and I eventually need to hold power to shut down and try again. I’ve tried multiple version of linux distribution burned to DVD without success. I’ve even tried just taking the disks out of my Mac pro and taking them to another machine, installing linux and then plugging them back in to the Mac Pro 2,1. This didn’t work, I had a little traction when I installed rEFInd boot loader, it could see the linux as a boot option, but when I select it, it tells me it can’t boot in legacy mode and the machine freezes up, needing a forced restart to get rebound it. Super annoying. Any advice? (Edited to correct a spelling in reference to Matt G’s surname)

@@dmug if interested, I did indeed join a forum after a few more days of trying to figure it out myself, first reply to my question was that they thought there might be something funky with the SATA DVD drives/ports which my cMP2,1 does indeed have, so I pulled the IDE drive from a 3,1 and swapped it out, definitely lucky to have access to another one on this occasion Anyway, works fine, that SATA port was the issue all along. Not sure if I just missed a note on any known issues with those SATA drives in your guide or Matt’s guide, but that seems to have been my biggest issue. So a 2,1 running Linux Mint natively, it’s a bit slow during boot, but once inside, it’s slick and will definitely give me more use from my aging cMP.

@dmug
@dmug 2 года назад
Being a MacBook user, you'll of course need aThunderbolt 3 eGPU case + the GPU. eGPUs are law of diminishing returns due to bandwidth as Thunderbolt 3 isn't nearly as fast as internal PCIe As a general but unscientific rule, you can expect about 80% of the performance of the GPU sticking in an external eGPU case. I'd probably use an eGPU case with a 6600 XT but at the cost of buying a the $400 GPU + $300ish Razer Core X eGPU. After that it makes a lot less sense . If you're thinking you're willing to spend the $1100-$1400 to get 6800 XT or 6900 XT + eGPU case might as as well consider selling your current MacBook Pro and getting MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro as even the base model bests the Mac Pro 2019 certain editing tasks because of dedicated media engine. The M1 series may not not be the best at gaming but the specialized media engine makes them capable of editing RAW 8k footage even at the entry level.

What’s the Best video card 5,1 ?…..I mean most compatible and best performance and easy to upgrade ?
@dmug
@dmug 10 месяцев назад
This isn't easily answered as it depends on your wants. The hyper common upgrade is a RX 580 as it doesn't require a pixlas mod and works in Monterey, with OpenCore, you can score a RX 6600 XT which is about the same speed as a VII in most tasks for $175 new, but you'll need to run Big Sur but you'll be able to easily play modern games at 1080p or higher.

@dmug
@dmug 2 года назад
That's always changing and depends on your location. Right now it'd be the RX 580 for most areas. It's good enough for gaming, especially in Windows at 1080p for many modern titles and has decent compute for video editing. I'd hope by this summer though Vega 56s will be back to the prepandemic price as I bought one used years ago for under $200.

@@dmug What brand and model of the RX580 is best ?
@dmug
@dmug 2 года назад
@@computerenthusiast402 just look at PC reviews, some are factory overclocked to deliver better performance and/or have bigger coolers that could be louder or quieter depending on design. The drivers on macOS are mature so there isn’t really any incompatibility. I’d just avoid the Radeon RX 590 which is the super over clocked version as it blocks a PCIe slot with an over sized cooler.
